Titans Defeat Colts; Eliminate Browns

Titans 16, Colts 10 (Final)

The Browns were able to pick up a victory in the final game of the regular season. I don't think many people picked the Browns to win ten games this season, especially after seeing how bad we looked Week 1 at home against the Pittsburgh Steelers. The Browns didn't lose a single home game after that, breaking a franchise record with a 7-1 record at Cleveland Browns Stadium.

Due to our poor road efforts though, our fate rests in the hands of the Indianapolis Colts tonight against the Tennessee Titans. If the Titans lose or tie, we are in the playoffs. If the Titans win, then it's offseason time in Cleveland. Let's hope that we'll see the postseason next week. This is the official discussion thread for tonight's Colts/Titans game, which I will be commenting on throughout (just like I do Browns games). If any of you would like to join in the discussion like you did in last week's Titans/Jets game, please feel free to do so.

Also, if you want to reminisce about anything else on the season or the 49ers game, feel free to do so here to pass time off before gametime. I will also be following the Steelers/Ravens and Chargers/Raiders contests to see who we could potentially be facing in the first round o the playoffs.

Re: Colts By Nature (Titans vs. Colts)
The Steelers apparantly want to jam the knife a little further, as they are losing 10-0 to the Ravens in the first quarter (we could've been playing for the division win).

Chargers and Raiders are tied 7-7. No thanks to JaMarcus Russell for Oakland though, as he's thrown another interception.

Re: Colts By Nature (Titans vs. Colts)
The Ravens are ahead of the Steelers 17-7 at the two minute mark in the first half.

The Chargers are tied 7-7 inside of two minutes.

Neither team is doing particularly well considering the playoffs are next week. Pittsburgh is playing backups while San Diego is not.

Re: Colts By Nature (Titans vs. Colts)
The Chargers made the most of their drive, going up 14-7 heading into halftime. Stover makes an automatic field goal before the half for the Ravens, and it'll be 20-7 Baltimore at halftime.

Re: Colts By Nature (Titans vs. Colts)
Check that with the Chargers game. Sebastian Janikowski kicked a 53-yard field goal as time expired to make it 14-10 Chargers.

Re: Colts By Nature (Titans vs. Colts)
Man I havent commented on this site in a while.

Anyway this game is crucial. I think the Colts will win though. I mean even if it is Sorgi he has learned from the best since he got drafted. I bet the Falcons, 49ers, and Dolphins would love to have him. I mean lets be real Sorgi isn't a bum. He is the ideal #2 QB. Get it done!

Re: Colts By Nature (Titans vs. Colts)
Right, Sorgi isn't a bum or a scrub. However, it's not the most ideal situation for him to face one of the best pass rushing defensive lines in football.

More than considering Sorgi though is considering that the Colts' backup defenders aren't scrubs. Heck, their backup defenders have carried the Colts much of this season.

Re: Colts By Nature (Titans vs. Colts)
true about their pass rushing, but also Peyton has been sacked only 21 times. His OL is pretty good. I no I no they will be resting them, but I still dont see the Titans getting to Sorgi that much. I see the Colts coming out fast and going up 14-0. Once they get a lead they put Sorgi in and I see them letting Addai run a few times which opens up the pass and so on. So coming into the 3rd quarter say they dont play addai. Well, I still like the chances with Kenton Keith. I mean the guy is averageing 4.4 yards a carry.

To me the key for the Colts backups is they need to stay balanced. I dunno maybe Im way too optimistic.

by kjc on Dec 30, 2007 5:59 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Re: Colts By Nature (Titans vs. Colts)
Addai is banged up enough to the point where I think when Manning is done, he'll be done too.

Yes, the Colts OL is good and limits Manning's sack, including against the Titans. However, what they will still be able to do to almost anyone is force you to throw the ball sooner than you'd like to. Manning has the experience to make those adjustments. To ask Sorgi to do that with backup wide receivers could be like watching Weinke throwing to the 49ers receivers today.

I don't think you're being too optimistic about the Colts succeeding. We just have to hope that it happens, for those of us that believe it'll happen.

Re: Colts By Nature (Titans vs. Colts)
Also looking at the last game they played the Titans had 2 sacks.

Anway past that discussion I am going over the past game they played where the Colts won 22-20 and here is what I saw. Vince Young played his best game all year in that game. Also that was Anthony Gonzalez first real action in an NFL Game. He now has almost a full season of action and is way better than week 2. A huge factor in this game will be field position. In the last meeting the Titans had only 1 long drive. All their scoring drives were about 50 yards. So the Colts need to win the field position battle.

Also in that game Vinetari missed a field goal and an extra point. Dont expect that to happen again in the dome. Lastly, in that game Kenton Keith was nonexsistent.

Re: Colts By Nature (Titans vs. Colts)
Smith with a touchdown pass against the Steelers. Ravens lead 27-7. You can see Mike Tomlin is relaxed on the sidelines; he didn't care about getting the third seed heading into Week 17.

The Chargers are winning 17-10, but win or lose, they will be the team the Browns would face in a potential first round playoff match.

That'd make it nice to network blog during the week, since I believe the only football blog we DON'T have is a Chargers one.

Re: Colts By Nature (Titans vs. Colts)
As I typed that, JaMarcus Russell fumbled and the Chargers picked it up in the end zone to go up 24-10.

Over on the NFC's side of things, the Washington Redskins are well on their way to clinching the sixth seed. It looks like they wouldn't have even needed a win, as the Saints lost earlier and the Vikings are down at Denver due to Tarvaris Jackson's ineffectiveness.

Gameday Inactives
Indianapolis Colts: DT Raheem Brock, OT Ryan Diem, WR Anthony Gonzalez, WR Marvin Harrison, CB Tim Jennings, DE Robert Mathis, DB Keiwan Ratliff, TE Ben Utecht.

Tennessee Titans: DE Sean Conover, RB Casey Cramer, LB Gilbert Gardner, DB Kelly Herndon, DT Antonio Johnson, C Kevin Mawae, WR Mike Williams, WR Paul Williams.

Negative news to see Harrison and Gonzo out for the Colts, as well as pass rusher Robert Mathis. For the Titans, good to see center Kevin Mawae out for the second week in a row. Maybe the Colts can squeeze some more pressure up front on Vince Young.

Ok, so far, the Colts don't look like they can move the ball under Sorgi. Biggest excitement moments will now come on:

-Kickoff return to open the half
-Any time Vince Young steps back to throw
-Deep ball from Sorgi

Consider that more of the Colts defenders will now be out to start the second half.

Indeed it is ;) And with how stagnant we saw the offenses play in the second quarter, don't rule it out of the question, lol.

Re: Colts By Nature (Titans vs. Colts)
I'm tired of the Colts having some of their better offensive/special teams plays brought back due to penalties.

10-10 tie heading to the fourth quarter, and it'll be 2nd-and-8 at the Colts 22, Indy having the ball.

YEAH! Holding on special teams, backing the Titans up half the distance to the goal. Titans should have it at the five-yard line. Colts winning field position right now.

Unbelievable; we get Mr. 63-yarder to drill a 54-yard field goal. Titans lead, 13-10, and now we need the Colts to do something as time is going to QUICKLY start coming off the clock.

-Run the ball and punt, as Sorgi can't move the ball.

Hope for a turnover...:(

Judging from what we have seen tonight, I am not too excited to have our post-season chances coming down to Jim Sorgi engineering a TD drive.

Re: Colts By Nature (Titans vs. Colts)
I can't blame the Titans.  They wont get past round one unless Norv Turner pulls a Marty and detonates in the post season.  We had the spot all locked up, but Anderson tossed our season away in an inexcusable 4 interceptions mess.

He did great things for us this season, but he cost us everything against the Bengals.

Re: Colts By Nature (Titans vs. Colts)
My thoughts....

Jim Sorgi has to be the worst backup QB I've ever seen in my life.

2 interceptions in a 40 second span destroyed an entire season.

DA choked and I really don't want to see him in a Browns uniform again.

I think this was out chance to get to the playoffs. This was our 2002. Don't see how we get better this offseason. Now, we'll have to pay choke artists like DA millions of dollars. No first round draft pick.

Maybe I should stop there. I'm f'n pissed right now.

Re: Titans Defeat Colts; Eliminate Browns
You can't be too negative.  How many times does a team win 10 and win their last game of the season.  How good the draft day tade work out?  Alot better than the 49ers!!!  I'm not gonna complain about the shortcomings(d-line and lb depth) too much.  We had a 6 win improvement.  We can improve our weaknesses with draft picks and cap space we have.  Now, lets re-sign/extend the guys we need to.  This team should feel good about its season and still be extremely motivated to be better.  That's the silver lining in this ending. However, we might need a significant improvement to be 10-6 again.

Re: Titans Defeat Colts; Eliminate Browns
crackaddictwhit is right. We should remember how fortunate scheduling was this year (AFC East, which is cake sans Patriots, and the NFC West, which is cake sans Seattle). Next year we get the NFC East and the AFC South, plus the two teams from the other  AFC divisions that finished second in those divisions (not as scary: Buffalo and Denver). Still, the prospect of playing two divisions that each sent three teams to the playoffs this year is, well, terrifying. We will need to improve to even make it back to ten wins.

Re: Titans Defeat Colts; Eliminate Browns
Time to look forward to 08.  The schedule gets a lot harder and we can't guarantee the offense will stay as healthy as this year.  Plus probably breaking in a new QB.  Could be a tough to duplicate 10 wins, but I think we'll have the talent to do it.

Re: Titans Defeat Colts; Eliminate Browns
I just looked back at the predictions in the Let's Go Tribe readers' prediction thread. I had us at 9-7, but said Winslow would be biggest disappointment (Oops). I also thought our defense would be the unit that carries us. Later on, I correctly predicted success for our O-line. All in all not too bad.
