Anderson's long term offer...

The Browns have offered Derek Anderson a three year offer according to the Columbus Dispatch.

"General manager Phil Savage has said the Browns will use its highest one-year tender on Anderson if a long-term contract cannot be reached. In making an initial three-year offer, it appears they don't want to go that route."

I think that this signals Anderson's departure.  Anderson should be looking for a longer deal (ala Tony Romo). If he says no thanks, then Savage can tell the fans that he tried his best to keep DA around; and then trade him for draft picks. Personally, I think that we should trade DA while his stock is high. If he does sign the offer, we will have a QB controversy at every INT... (My computer is acting up and I am not able to get the quote in a quotebox.)

Re: Anderson's long term offer...
I think you are right. Phil is in the position where he has to appear on the surface to want to keep Anderson or else he could face media backlash and backlash from fans in the keep Anderson camp. By offering him a contract that won't quite meet Derek's demands, he puts himself in a stronger position to trade DA.

Re: Anderson's long term offer...
Yeah, let's give up on DA because Brady Quinn is a lock.  He is teh awesome.  After all, Number 1 draft picks at QB always work out -- remember Tim Couch, he turned out to be a franchise quarterback!!!

And then we can get a 1st and 3rd round draft pick for DA, and we can use the 1st round pick on much needed defensive players.  After all, every 1st round pick for defensive players works out -- Courtney Brown and Gerard Warren were locks and they helped maintain the Browns D for a decade.

Great ideas -- you should be a GM.

Browns fans really are amazing -- giving up on DA would be the dumbest thing the Browns ever did (and that's saying a lot).

Re: Anderson's long term offer...
As nice and easy as it is to compare Tim Couch and Brady Quinn, it really isn't relevant or proving anything. You can moan about draft busts like Brown and Warren and then I will go ahead and cite you the number of star defensive players that have been taken near the top of the draft.

Re: Anderson's long term offer...
Brady Quinn is "teh awesome".  How could we possibly think about trying a first round draft pick when we have a quarterback (released by the Ravens who have oodles of great QBs), who was absolutely perfect for the entire season and never made any mistakes that would make us question his succession of Peyton Manning and Tom Brady as the next great quarterback.

But you're absolutely right.  We shouldn't make any changes to our team.  The roster we have now is guaranteed to make the Super Bowl next year and since you proved, we don't need any draft picks anyway since every single draft pick in the history of the world has flamed out.  All the good players come from outer space.

Thanks for enlightening us, Phil.

Re: Anderson's long term offer...
I wouldn't be surprised if Anderson gets the one-year tender. A big deal has been made about Marc Bulger and Tony Romo getting lucrative deals.

Bulger had been fairly consistent for several years, and while I agree with the Rams keeping him around, I think they overpaid, thus setting the benchmark way too high.

Romo technically only played in a similar way that Anderson did. But, the difference is that Romo had been groomed for a couple of years and appears to be the first quarterback with a leash on Terrell Owens.

Anderson came out of no where almost and put together a miraculous season. If he can do it for one more year, a reward would be more applicable. If not, we have Mr. Quinn.

Re: Anderson's long term offer...
I think Chris is right here.  I expect the Browns to offer D.A. a 2 or 3 year deal, but I'm not yet convinced about his long-term development.  He had a great year - but a much better first half season than second.  What evidence is there that the first half wasn't irregular, and the second half a reversion to his true playing level?  He has excellent receivers to throw to, and a respectable running game.  His biggest attributes, IMHO, are his arm strength and ability to get the ball off quickly.  He isn't especially accurate, and we all know he makes some questionable choices, as he apparently did also in college. I hope he's the real deal, but I'm not yet convinced.

Re: Anderson's long term offer...
Guess D.A. didn't want a 3 year deal.  He wants a 5 year deal.

Once again, I think that this means that the Browns are setting up to deal D.A.  He wants a deal like Romo and Schaub.  That would be a tough contract to sign with a first round pick on the bench.

Re: Anderson's long term offer...
This is where cost comes into play. Even if you think Anderson deserves to be the starter or is better, you have to factor in the length and size of the contract. I am sure we can afford to keep them both, but it may be more cost effective to hope that Quinn can replace Anderson and use the money to lock up some help on defense.
