Ask BigBlueShoe: Week Thirteen

Hello Cleveland faithful. BigBlueShoe here just in time for the post-Thanksgiving game between the Colts and Browns in Cleveland. I'm here to answer your questions about the Colts leading up to the game. Just so you know, OC Jeff Saturday will not play, OG Ryan Lilja was shelved for the season, and it is looking like Bob Sanders will not play either.

Contrary to what many are saying, I see this as a very, VERY tough game. Cleveland has underperformed, but has a lot of talent.

Having said that, ask away.

is Anthony Gonzalez, the pride of my high school alma mater, going to finally supplant Marvin Harrison as the slot receiver next year, or is Marv and his dangling knee ligaments going to trot out there next year as well? It seems that his increasing cap number is nowhere near the value he puts out on the field, or am I just not seeing him on a weekly basis enough to say “Hey, it’s Marvin Harrison, there’s room for him”?

Does Jim Sorgi have any Matt Cassel in him?

And not a question, but just wanted to mention that despite the quality of and in my opinion, likeability of most of the Colts roster, I kinda despise you guys for laying down against the Titans last year in week 17. Just sayin’.

eh, I guess I’ll toss my opinion in here a bit.

I think if Marvin Harrison is to return to the Colts next season, he’ll have to take a pay cut, that’s fairly obvious. As much as I hate to say it, he isn’t the “Marvin of old,” but that doesn’t mean he is washed up either. No one really knows what the deal behind his struggles are since the playoff game last season against San Diego. Marvin was never known to be a fumbler, but yet in back to back games (regardless of the time in between them) against the Chargers and Bears, he lost two fumbles that royally screwed the Colts. Accompany that with his frequent drops (another very un-Marvin like problem) and most Colts fans were left scratching their heads asking, “wtf?”

Regarding the drops and lack of production this season, the blame can’t be solely on Marvin’s shoulders though. Peyton Manning came out of the gate this season stumbling. He was not ready to play and his knee clearly wasn’t 100, or even 75 (imo). The knee was causing his passes to be erratic at best, and the timing between he and Marvin had been non-existent for almost an entire year. That’s the biggest thing I think. Logic would tell you, “Well if they spent 10+ years together why would the timing cease to exist so quickly?” Well, I can answer that question with one word: Practice.

I think Marvin still has the moves and is still one of the most clutch receivers on the field today. So I highly doubt the Colts are worried about trying to push him out of the door just to get Gonzo playing as the #2 receiver opposite of Reggie Wayne. This is just my opinion but, I think Gonzo should stay in the slot. As a pure slot receiver, Gonzo blows Clark out of the water. He’s faster, has better hands, and is more elusive than Clark. Seeing Wayne, Gonzo, and Harrison on the field gives me the biggest shit-eating-grin ever. With those three out there, one is bound to get open (ala the Stokley-Wayne-Harrison era) and just shred defenses. Defenses can’t double team all 3, and if Clark is on the field lined up as a TE, talk about scary.

Basically what I’m trying to say is, yes, Gonzo will most likely supplant Harrison, but not yet (I hope).

To save everyone the time, Sorgi has no potential at all. So no, he has no Cassel in him.

Gonzalez: Yes, and it might happen next year. Rumor says the Colts might cut Marvin at season’s end. There is nothing wrong with Marvin. He is still fast, makes great cuts, and runs great routes. Marvin was clutch against SD last week.

Sorgi: No. Sorgi stinks. Cassel, at least, has an arm.

Hating the Colts because your team couldn’t beat a putrid Bengals team in Week 16 makes absolutely no sense. Just sayin’.

Can you clarify for some on this board your assertion that the Browns have a lot of talent? There has been a lot of debate about this recently

Winslow is an amazing talent… if he has his head on straight.
Edwards could be the best WR in football… if he caught the ball consistently.
The defense could dominate… if they had better LBers. The d-line is good.

I also think Quinn is good. too bad re: broken finger, but he should give you hope. Many teams would kill for a young QB like Quinn.

1.How frustrating is it to have Bob Sanders injured so frequently while he is such a force when healthy?
2. How many draft picks from the 2005 drafts to this past April’s draft would you consider “hits”, “misses”, or “too early to tell/unknown/other”? Simple gut reactions encouraged, round can be taken in to account if you like (for instance an unimpressive 7th rounder who can fill in as a backup can be considered a “hit”, and a decent 1st rounder who isn’t playing especially well can be considered a "miss") Your draft history is here.
3. Should I start Dallas Clark (vs Owen Daniels), Reggie Wayne, and/or Anthony Gonzalez in my fantasy league?

Starting Clark is a huge mistake anymore, he just isn’t very consistent due to Gonzo. Reggie Wayne has more potential than anyone on the Colts to put up huge numbers, so I’d go with him.

1. VERY! But, I will not comment on frustration in front of Cleveland fans. You guys have had to deal with many frustrating sports teams and players recently. I won’t insult you by whining about Bob Sanders.
2. Good question. Hits (because they turned into starters): Marlin Jackson, TJ Rushing, Kelvin Hayden, Antoine Bethea, Gonzo, Addai, Dawson. Misses (because they are gone): Vincent Burns, Welsh, Dave Rayner, Pitcock, Robert Hunt. Jury is still out on Dante Hughes, Condren, Roy Hall, Clint Session.
3. I’m starting Clark this week in my league.

Roy Hall is a bust and hopefully will be hitting the bricks soon. Clint Session on the other hand, is an amazing linebacker (except last week when he whiffed on a tackle). The dude is the hardest hitting guy on the Colts outside of Sanders and Reid. I’m inclinded to list him as a stud.

Roy Hall didn’t do much for the Buckeyes, either. I think his refusal to move to TE cost him in the end.

The guy can’t even finish training camp without being injured for an entire season. He’s been wasting a roster spot on the Colts for two years now. It’s a shame though because a bigger/taller receiver would be pretty sweet

Yeah, 6’3", 240 with 4.35 speed is a lot of talent to waste.

by rufio on Nov 27, 2008 2:49 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

he made it out of camp both years

he got hurt a few games into his rookie season (severe concussion and a shoulder injury that needed surgery) and was IRed immediately (so didn’t waste roster space while hurt) this year he got hurt in the opener and has been taking up a roster spot since.

They drafted him to play special teams, but even without him both coverage units have been hugely improved (from worst in the league by far, to pretty good).

Drafts (have to add a category)

Hits, Marlin Jackson, Kelvin Hayden,Tyjuan Hagler, Joseph Addai, Freddy Keiaho, Clint Session, Keyunta Dawson, T.J. Rushing, Antoine Bethea (hands down the best pick of the last 3 years. 6th round pick, won the starting job in camp from a healthy returning starter, made the Pro Bowl as an alternate in his second year) Anthony Gonzalez

so-so Matt Giordano, Dylan Gandy, Charlie Johnson

Misses Vincent Burns, Jonathan Welsh, Anthony Davis, Dave Rayner, Quinn Pitcock, Brannon Condren, Micheal Toudouze,

Too early Tim Jennings, Dante Hughes, Roy Hall, Micheal Coe, Tony Ugoh (love him, but he hasn’t proven whether he was worth last years first rounder yet), entire 2008 draft class (all 9 made the roster and have barely been seen since)
