Schottenheimer: Old/New Browns Coach
There's a rumor going around:
"The Cleveland Browns could look to the past if they decide to replace head coach Romeo Crennel.
ESPN is reporting that according to team sources the Browns are looking at Marty Schottenheimer for the 2009 season.
While Schottenheimer has achieved much regular season success (200-126-1 record as a coach), his teams have not done well in the playoffs (5-13). Schottenheimer most recently coached the San Diego Chargers but has also served as head coach for the Washington Redskins, Kansas City Chiefs and the Browns.
The sources also told ESPN that the Browns would also consider former Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Bill Cowher if he were interested in a return to the NFL."

I would be fine with this as well. He is a good coach.
I would be interested in how he would handle the offensive coordinator job, though. He has a past with Chud, but his son could be available.

The San Diego offense was doing pretty well with him and Chud. Of course I’m sure that his son and even his brother would be in the mix for coaching positions.

I guess Blanton Collier or Nick Scorich was not available.
Seriously, I know Marty got a raw deal in San Diego, sure he would love to get another shot at it. Should be interesting come January.

Watching Drew Brees light it up in New Orleans and Norv Turner fall on his face (again) as a head coach must have San Diegoans more irate than ever.
I feel bad for LT. Classy guy, good player, and he is watching the organization he helped build destroy itself.

I’ve been here in San Diego for the past eight years and there’s definitely a strange feeling this year. It’s almost as if we’re in denial that the Chargers aren’t going to the playoffs this year. What’s odd is it seems more people were calling for Turner’s head last year than this year. The loss of Merriman really messed up the flow of the whole defense. Rivers has been doing fine this year so not that much of a loss for Brees. As for LT, I’m not totally convinced that the O-line is the same as it has been in the past few years. If things keep deteriorating next year, rebuilding could be coming.

Merriman was a huge loss.
It still has to be a little bittersweet watching Brees dominate as he has. I might just feel like that because I flat out do not like Rivers. He has played well this year, and is one of few QBs that has proven he can actually play in this league. But Brees is just on another level this year.
You guys have one of the most talented rosters in football, and after all the losing in the 90s I am sorry to see your team going the way it is right now. Losing….sucks.

Boy is that the truth, losing blows. This is getting old. I see the Steelers, Colts, Patriots and the freaking Ravens winning for the most part year after year and it burns.
I hope Lerner has some fire in the belly to get this team straighten out. It just appears to be apathy throughtout the organization. I don’t have any proof, just a gut feeling.

dude, it is definitely not apathy. you think that the browns organization has lost interest in fielding a winner? you’re out of your mind. lerner has even said that everyone’s job is up for review…he wants to win so bad he can taste it.

Yeah even if he didn’t personally take pride in the team or anything like that (which I think he does), he knows it would make him filthy rich(er) to field a winner. Cleveland would go crazy.

I can only think that these are nostalgic rumors, no matter where they’re coming from. Last week on MNF, Schottenheimer was interviewed and sounded more than 99% uninterested in coaching in the NFL again, without any possible team being brought up. Just this monring, one of the Sirius NFL guys (forget the name) mentioned on the Steve Czaban show that he had Marty on recently and said he sounds content with his media gigs and isn’t likely to return to an NFL organization even in an executive role.
You know Selig? Ombudsman.

I’d rather have Cowher, but I’d happy take Marty back over Tubby. A guy with an actual resume is a vast improvement over the assistant for life.
Bill Cowher = victory

Brad, Congrats on your fantasy win. I have never seen such a complete meltdown in a fantasy playoff, I thought I had it wrapped up.

Both playoff games were upsets! I hope that trend does not continue this week.
Well, at least on my side of the bracket.

Upsets? I had the better record — by only half a game, but it was better.

The winners were the lower ranked teams by the computer.
I don’t know how they do the ranking.

Computer rankings? What is this, the BCS?

Apparently. Good thing we didn’t just have one game for the championship.

Yeah, I thought this game would be close. I was worried when Hixon dropped that sure TD that losing those 12 or so points would cost me the game. Thankfully the Arizone defense got a couple TD’s off of turnovers.

Can we please stop acting like Mortenson’s reports actually mean anything? I mean seriously, he is spewing rumors that are more baseless than anything you could come up with in your dreams. I am totally convinced if you e-mailed Mort saying, “Hey wouldn’t be cool if the Browns offered their entire draft for Mike Tomlin, Dick Labeau and a coach to be named later?” that he would publish a report to that effect. Seriously, let’s just ignore the guy until one of his “scoops” turns out to be relevant or even a little accurate.

here’s marty today saying that it’s unlikely he’ll coach in cleveland again.
i’d actually chalk this up a bit to one of the commandments of coaching: “thou shalt not publicly covet a currently occupied position”. marty is as old school as it gets, so i can’t imagine him ever saying he’d like a job that another guy has.
that said, this is a pretty vigorous rejection of the idea. it would be a pretty remarkable reversal for him to take this job in jan/feb. too bad, b/c i was beginning to really like the idea…especially if scott pioli came as the GM.

I saw that. I mean, seriously, Lerner has said he would re-evaluate after the season. Beyond that, do you really think he is calling potential coaches? I guess it could be a little PR/politicking- leak a rumor, see how the public responds to the name. But, I just don’t give Lerner, or Mort for that matter, that much credit. The absolute most Mort could be uncovering here is that somebody, somewhere in the Browns organization made a list of potential available coaches and Marty was on it.
by Ryan Kelsey on Dec 9, 2008 12:20 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
it doesn’t take a very comprehensive list to get to Marty either, right? i mean, in the universe of people the browns could potentially speak to about a HC vacany, how deep do you have to go to get to Cowher and Marty? 5 tops?
given that cowher and marty are both out of football, i could see the browns having touched base with their agents or something, but that’s about it.

I think Marty wants to be the GM, not sure he wants to coach

This is definitely from the TFWIW column, but I have a friend who used to play for the Browns. His inside speculation is that Marty will be the Browns coach next year. I would like to reveal who the former player, but it is someone who would probably have some inside information
