ESPN's John Clayton has a nice article on the luxurious situation the Cleveland Browns have at the quarterback position.

Reading statements like “the Browns are loaded at quarterback” and “they have one of the best offensive lines in the NFL” makes me realize how far this team has come in one year. Who would have thought last summer that the national media would be talking that way about our Cleveland Browns?

It’s almost surreal. Prior to last season, I thought the offensive line would probably start getting at least some props over the next few years. I never dreamed of that thought from the QB situation though…

I can dream...

I hope we are saying the same things about the D-line this time next year.

I thought the article..

put a positive spin on the QB controversy that is sure to follow. What if BQ is lights out in the preseason and DA just “average ” or struggles. Then we are gonna see an entirely different slant on this. No?

I cant wait to see how this plays out in training camp!

I don’t think we should worry if/when Quinn plays better than Anderson in the preseason.

1st, Anderson was not very good last year in the preseason. Quinn was clearly the best QB then. Anderson always has played better in real NFL games than in practice/exhibition.

2nd, we will not roll out anything close to the final, real, full offense with all of the wrinkles in the preseason.

3rd, Assuming Quinn will be the 2nd QB in the game, he will be playing backups and if he doesn’t look better against backups, we should worry.

Casual fans, and maybe some media types might stir up controversy, but the people that matter (Romeo and Phil) will error on the side of playing Quinn too little, not playing him too much.

Granted Quinn maybe playing backups but he will also be playing with bacups on his side. I hate that inquiry, that he is playing aginst 2nd and 3rd teamers. Its not like he has got the first offense with him playing the practice squad scrubs. Think b4 you speak.

I think rufio was just put in his place ;)

(I’ll let rufio come in and defend himself here)

OK first of all, if you actually verbalize (and therefore “speak”) anything before you post it on the internet, you are a weirdo.

The fact remains that playing with and against backups is different than playing with and against starters. I know that he will be playing with backups as well. I am not some stranger-to-football, only-regurgitates-buzzwords moron. You make no valid arguments against my main point, which was that Romeo and Phil will not make a judgment based entirely on four pre-season games and the opinions of the fans. They will know what goes on behind closed doors, they will know who their players are looking to in the locker room, they will have a better feel for who has “it” than you or I or anyone else. Regardless of who “struggles” in the preseason, the games and practices aren’t the be all, end all. DA had an absolutely horrible preseason last year, and went on to have one of the best seasons at QB for the Browns. That fact still remains.

Now, to address your argument. I did not go in depth about playing against/WITH backups because I have a tendency to be long-winded (see above and below) and figured that people would simply get the gist of my point. Since you don’t seem to understand that there is a difference, or are peeved at my lack of clarity and distinction on the topic, I digress. There is a difference in talent between the NFL and college. That is why no one is taking Pat White in the 1st round in the NFL, why no one looks purely at college stats/performance when drafting, and why some guys who didn’t even make it on to big-time college rosters (Shawne Merriman, DeMarcus Ware, TO, Jerry Rice, the list is infinate) make it in to the 1st round of the NFL and/or have phenomenal careers (that along with the fact that kids are still maturing at 16-18 when college teams scout them, and other factors). There is a difference between the NFL and the NCAA. Schemes like the read-option aren’t run as full-time offensive systems in the NFL because of the disparity in talent between the pros and college. What the hell does this have to do with the original point? That disparity in talent exists not only between college and the pros, but also between the 1st stringers and guys who are trying to make the roster. The guys on the 1st string are bigger, faster, and simply better at their jobs than the 2nd stringers.

Lets say BQ goes 0-8 passing in one game, but his receivers were open on every pass, and every pass was thrown accurately, but the receivers dropped all 8 catchable balls. This would mean Quinn did his job: he found open receivers, he delivered the ball on time, where it was supposed to be. Quinn is going to look damn good in this situation, arguably because he was playing against marginal CBs (it was easy for his receivers to get open) his stat line is going to look bad because he is playing with some terrible WRs on his side, but he will look like a wizard running the offense. The Browns offense will look terrible because of the drops, but BQ, himself will look like he did an outstanding job. He looked that way in college, playing with some terrible players against some NFL backup-caliber players and teams. Notre Dame didn’t always win, but Brady pretty much always looked good if you look at what he, himself did (not the stat line). It is harder for receivers to get open, and harder for QBs to find the open receiver against a better D. Smarter and more athletic players can disguise coverages and blitzes better. Those players will be playing with the first team. Pass rushers also get better and the QB’s “internal clock” has to get faster at the higher levels of football. I don’t care if Joe Thomas fused with Orlando Pace and Jon Ogden and was blocking for Brady, a 1st team’s D will always get to the passer faster against a 1st team Oline than a 2nd team’s D against a 2nd team Oline. PLUS there is something to be said for the confidence of saying “I have gone up against the best and succeeded”. There is a confidence in saying “I have completed a pass against Champ Bailey” that you don’t get from throwing one against a 2nd teamer. BQ does not have this yet, and will not get it when he plays against 2nd and 3rd teamers. He already has confidence he can beat chumps, and he should look good doing it. He knows he can beat those guys. He thinks he can beat 1st teamers.

Lastly, Inquiry:
(n) inquiry, enquiry, research (a search for knowledge) “their pottery deserves more research than it has received”
(n) question, inquiry, enquiry, query, interrogation (an instance of questioning) “there was a question about my training”; “we made inquiries of all those who were present”
(n) inquiry, enquiry (a systematic investigation of a matter of public interest)

You did not use that correctly.

You know what I dislike is when people who do not even roo for the Browns assume everyone just wants to dump Anderson for Quinn, and then state “we are stupid” for that. To these people say; no one wants to just dump Anderson for Quinn what makes us nervous is that down the stretch an average quarterback started to appear. His first 8-9 games he was something else then the cold kicked in and he kinda kicked the bucket at times. The playcalling against the bengals especially in the red zone I highly disagreed with. We are playing the BUNGALS RUN THE BALL!!!!!!!!!!
