Help a Fellow Browns Fan
Just joined Dawgs by Nature but I have been a long member of the Lets Go Tribe blog. Lifelong Browns, Indians, and Cavs fan.
I've been lucky enough to be able to watch the Browns for the last couple of years due to the fantastic DirecTV NFL Superpass. Due to that I've been able to see every fumble, bumble, and touchdown by our Browns for the past few years. Unfortunately I will be heading off to college soon and won't have access to a satellite dish or much else in the range of telecommunications. I was wondering how other people in my predicament cope. Is there any way to watch the games over the internet? Radio in my area (Central VA). Any help is appreciated. Thanks and Go Browns!

BWs
If I were you I would do what I do living in Cincinnati. When the Browns are on I go to BWs and find another Winslow or Quinn jersey to sit next to. Spend the next 4 hours watching the game with your new friend over wings. The biggest problem is unless you can find a Browns backer establishment you won’t have sound for the game. Lucky for you that we will be on TV a lot this year.

There is a Browns Backers group in Charlottesville.

See, we in Blacksburg aren't sophisticated enough to watch Browns games :D

True, but the most important part is that there’s a bar listed there. If they’ve got a meeting place already, they presumably have at least a TV at that bar to watch the Browns on.

I went to a wings and sports bar near the train tracks in Charlottesville to watch the Draft, they were pretty laid back about choosing what was on TV, so you shouldn’t have a problem. We are in a kind of NFL deadzone in Western VA so you should be able to find a TV no one has taken over yet.

Also want to add that not everyone that goes somewhere to watch the games registers with the club. I went to school in Boston and always went to the BB there and never registered and now do the same in NYC

Ever heard of a program called Sopcast?
My Internet connection is not good enough to view streaming video, so I can’t comment on the picture quality/accuracy of what I’m about to say:
There is a program called Sopcast that can view streaming videos. Last season, on this page, there were Browns games listed just about every week (if not every week). I actually think a few DBN users used this:

Obviously right now, there is no way to test this because games are not in session yet. However, I recommend you try out some of the baseball games (or other sports) to test it out and see if it’s something you might be able to utilize:

To our users who have used Sopcast, please feel free to elaborate on your personal experiences.

I use it (Sopcast) to watch soccer games from England and it works quite well. Don’t expect to see everything crystal clearly but it is better than nothing.

Well
I’ve had much the same quandary here in SoCal. I cant afford that ridiculous NFL Sunday Ticket bullshit, and even if I could I’m not allowed satellite at my apartment complex. And they NEVER show Browns games on the local tv. CBS invariably shows the Chargers or Raiders and FOX, a random NFC East team or the Packers.
I’ve coped mostly by watching the gamecast on CBS Sports.com. Its not ideal, but coupled with the commentary on the game threads here, it’s doable. You might also consider my other strategy, talking a more affluent friend into getting the Sunday Ticket (“Dude, you can totally get every Packers game! Yeah, even the 3 they don’t show on FOX!”) and then showing up every week . :Hey, can we check the Browns game for a sec?”
Of course, if there’s a Browns bar in your area, by all means hit that bitch up.

sopcast is ok
I would try and go to the bars first. I used it 4 or 5 times last year. Its worse than most streaming video such as MLB TV. When I tried to watch the raiders game, I lost my connection several times and during the last 3 minutes. I never saw either field goal attempt. My internet provider is cable. Too bad the NFL doesn’t have an internet package.

Same Quandry
I am moving out to Boulder, Co. soon, and am facing the same struggle.
Groceries or DirecTV….
The good news for me is that we have 5 primetime games, and another game against Denver.
by rufio on Jul 9, 2008 1:32 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I meant to mention that earlier. 5 primetime games, a “national” game on opening weekend, plus other potential primetime/national games as long as you’re not blocked by regional coverage.
Also, I if you’re going to be home all-day Sunday for the football season and already have DirecTv, there’s no reason not to get the Ticket.

I’d say got to BWs or any sports bar that has a lot of TVs. They will show almost every game, and I’m sure if you get there early and ask someone you can get the Browns game on at least one TV.

I haven’t lived in Ohio since 02, but always catch the games at a bar or something. I live in Chicago now, so it’s easy. But before I lived in Santa Fe, and I could always find a place that would put it on… after 5 minutes of flipping in the phone book.

Here is a link to all the VA Browns backers groups. I have blonged and gone to the group in Atlanta. It is a fun enviorment to watch a Browns game in a bar of fellow Browns fans.
