Cargile Waived; 2 DB's added

The Cleveland Browns have waived DB Steve Cargile and have signed DB Travis Key and DB Brandon Mitchell, the club announced today.

Key, 5-10 and 185 lbs., was a former walk-on at Michigan State and played in 40 career games with 113 tackles. A native of Three Rivers, Mich., Key started the 2007 season at strong safety for the Spartans and collected 69 tackles and two interceptions.

Mitchell, 6-3 and 205 lbs., joins the Browns after spending his rookie season in 2007 on the Houston Texans practice squad. Mitchell played in 45 career games at Ohio State at both the free and strong safety positions. As a senior at Ohio State, Mitchell ranked fourth on the club with 51 tackles and added two interceptions.

This was a move that needed to happen and I am hopeful that these guys can do better than the guys we had play on Thursday. I was a fan of Cargile because of his Cleveland roots, but he was the weak link and he needed to go.

I don’t have much background information on these guys, but both of them should get shots at playing versus the Giants this Monday. Both are listed as defensive backs, but they played safety—which makes sense, since we lost two safeties (Cargile and Baxter).

After that huge Ohio State discussion a week or so ago, surely one of tOSU’s fans can give their thoughts on Mitchell?

Mitchell can't cover.

I always wondered if Tressel kept him as the starter just because he was a senior. We had younger guys who I thought would do a better job. He hits decently, but from what I remember he isn’t going to go Ronnie Lott on anyone. “Meh”, if I may.

yeah, I don’t have many positive memories of Mitchell. He wasn’t a great cover guy, and didn’t really hit hard. He was kind of a tweener as a safety.

As both of these guys would be fringe guys at best, hopefully which ever one fits the special teams better gets the last DB spot.

Normally I’d pull just for the tOSU guy, but in this case I’m pulling for him because he is 5 inches taller and can match up better height wise with the TEs of the league.
