Browns vs. Giants preseason game the best thing for the Browns

  1. The loss to the Giants was a wake up call in preseason when the records get wiped out.
  2. The next preseason game became important not for a tune up game but to see how our players respond to adversity.
  3. Cribbs high ankle sprain should heal before the Cowboys game
  4. Anderson injury not serious long term and gives Browns a chance to evaluate Quinn in an important game.  This evaluation had to take place sooner then later and Anderson will be back in time to start the season.
  5. The holes in the secondary are a surely not to be missed by Savage who will remove any excuses of budget or signing bonuses and sign an impact player before the season begins.
  6. Embarrassing performance by the O-line which not only got kicked around but allowed the #1 QB to get hurt.  That performance will not soon be forgotten by those 5 - 7 guys

Did I miss any?

___Ok so the Browns didn't read my post.  I'm not even sure I should get direct tv now...

Where exactly is Savage going to find this “impact player” for the secondary? I doubt there are many just walking down the street.

It’s not about budget constraints. There just aren’t any good DB’s out there right now. If there was, the Browns or some other team would have signed him already.

Maybe we can get one from the XFL

Or maybe we can get one from the Dolphins.

The Miami Dolphins traded cornerback Travis Daniels to the Cleveland Browns on Wednesday for an undisclosed draft pick.
Travis Daniels, DB

2007 Statistics
G/GS: 16/5
Tackles: 28
Interceptions: 1

Daniels played in all 16 games last season for Miami, including five starts. He had 27 tackles and an interception.

The Dolphins took Daniels with a fourth-round draft pick in 2005. Then-coach Nick Saban made the pick after coaching Daniels at LSU. Daniels has played cornerback and safety.

He started 14 games his rookie season and had 62 tackles and an interception. Daniels recorded 36 tackles and an interception in 2006.

Hopefully it’s not a day 1 pick…

I wouldn’t say that the injuries are the best thing for the Browns, though I understand what you mean. It’s more so that “if they HAD to happen, the outcomes (length of injury) seem to be opportune in the end”.

I doubt Savage is going to make a serious move at cornerback. It’d actually be kind of a poor decision at this point: if he makes a move now, the questions will come in asking why didn’t he do it sooner so that the player could form chemistry in our system (because honestly, we knew we had holes in the secondary all along)?

The best thing for the Browns though is that we got to see what the Giants were like at their best, while the Giants saw us at our worst. That could potentially offer a slight advantage for the Browns in our regular season contest.

With all the hype of McDonald and Wright I don’t believe that prior to the Giants game everyone believed that we had huge holes, including Savage, just that we were very thin. So much so that Phil felt he could wait until the cuts to pick up someone. With the move today that obviously shows they couldn’t wait.

Cousins isn’t working out, Adams will have to play safety for a while so it was obvious we needed to make a move. Old Ty Law who I believe is still available or a trade was the impact player I was referring too. Impact is probably an overstatement but I still wouldn’t be surprised depending on how we look against the Lions to see another move happen. We play too many teams with good receivers and QBs to get toasted all season.

I hope we don’t mortgage the future to fix these problems b/c dealing with Dallas or Parcells in Miami is like dealing with the Devil. We need our #1 & #2 picks next year to get RB and DE.

DE? if we spend a first or second rounder next year on the the DL, i’ll be livid.

Our starting D-line and our only decent D-line backup, Shuan Smith, are all 28 or above. These guys don’t have too many more years left in their prime. If one of you starting DE went down this season, Shuan Smith would have to play DE, with no one able o backup Shuan Rogers effectively. Next year we should draft/pickup/resign players like this:

Draft:

1st: HB (to replace Jamal Lewis)

2nd: DE or CB (to get a good starter/backup)

4th: CB or DE (to get a good starter/backup)

6th: OLB (to replace Willie McGinnest)

FA: In order of importance

QB: to backup either DA or Brady Quinn

CB/SS: to backup Sean Jones and the CB’s

OT: to backup Shaffer and Thomas

Re-sign: In order of importance

SS: Sean Jones

KR/PR/WR: Josh Cribbs

TE: Kellen Winslow

I would say right now that we should target a DB in the first round. Obviously it’s early but that is where this team needs the most help. Especially since RB is the easiest position to find a good player outside of the first round.

Shaun Smith just turned 27 this week. Williams, Rogers, R. Smith are 28, 29 and 30, respectively. Which is to say, the entire DL is right in their prime, not the least bit old (look at the Steelers for a high quality, but old DL… that’s where we’ll be in 4 years, without adding anyone).

If the player isn’t a reach, we must get a pass rushing OLB to play opposite Wimbley. Just below this in importance would be HB and secondary.
