Browns vs. Lions - Official Game Thread

Cleveland Browns at Detroit Lions, Aug 23, 2008 4:00 PM EDT

CLEVELAND BROWNS (0-2) GAME #3 DETROIT LIONS (2-0)
VS.
Date: August 23, 2008 Location: Detroit, MI
Time: 4:00 p.m. ET
Stadium: Ford Field
TV: NFL (or WKYC, Ch. 3)
Favorite: Lions by 3
Radio: WMMS, 100.7 FM Over/Under: 41
SBN Coverage: Pride of Detroit Injury Report:
Anderson, Lewis

The third preseason game is usually intended to be the No. 1 test of how your team will operate during the regular season. By default, we're not going to have that chance. Six key players will miss this today's game against the Lions, including QB Derek Anderson, RB Jamal Lewis, WR Braylon Edwards, WR Joshua Cribbs, LB Willie McGinest, and S Brodney Pool.

Nonetheless, the game will be one to watch. We're going to get our first look at QB Brady Quinn as a starter, and I'd expect him to see at least a series into the third quarter. The most ecstatic player on the team should be QB Ken Dorsey, since third-string quarterbacks usually don't play in the third preseason game.

Pre-Game Digest (more to be added if as the day moves along if necessary):

  • I'd expect us to get a look at CB Travis Daniels some time during the first half if the Lions spread the field with four wide receivers at some point. Remember, Daniels has been working with the Miami Dolphins the whole offseason now, so it's not like we need to "ease" him into things.
  • It'll be interesting to see who will get the start at wide receiver opposite of Donte Stallworth. Travis Wilson did not look good last week, but neither did a lot of other players. I'm banking on the coaching staff giving Wilson another shot against a less aggressive defense.
  • How much of a role will Kevin Kasper play? He has returned to practice this week, and although his chances are slim, I still think the team would favor him over Steve Sanders if he produces.
  • This should be the day to decide who the backup running back will be. Jason Wright really hasn't had a lot of reps, so I think the team will try to work him in early before handing the load off to Jerome Harrison during the second and third quarters.
  • Shaun Rogers is going to be facing his former team, but I could really care less about that. What I do care about is seeing our starting defensive line together for the first time this preseason: Robaire Smith, Corey Williams, and Rogers. The Lions aren't known for their running game, so we'd better see some nice stuffs early on.
  • Rookie linebacker Alex Hall could get the start in place of the injured McGinest. I can't imagine that boding well for David McMillan, but I'm all for seeing what Hall can bring to the table.
  • The Lions will use former Browns CB Leigh Bodden as a backup for now, as opposed to a starter. Looks like we got the better end of the deal, eh? I wouldn't be surprised to see Bodden lined up in the nickel defense early on though.
  • This is the final game for five players to make a name for themselves. Not too long after the game, the Browns will have to trim their roster from 80 to 75 players. My early projections: DB Brandon Mitchell, RB Austin Scott, TE Kolo Kapanui, OL Jonathan Palmer, and DL Brian Schaefering.
  • Because Harrison and Wright are more capable pass catchers than Lewis, I'd like to see us try some more screen plays -- particularly in the first quarter. We have been unbelievably poor in executing screens this preseason, and that's something we need to master before our opener against the Dallas Cowboys.
  • The Lions signed QB Drew Henson on Friday after second-year QB Drew Stanton sprained his thumb. I wouldn't expect Henson to play against Cleveland unless an emergency arises.

This is the official gameday thread for the Cleveland Browns' third preseason game of the season, as they fight for pride against the Detroit Lions. All comments regarding the game as it goes on and immediately following the game should remain in this thread. Enjoy the game, and GO BROWNS!!!

Should be an interesting one. I’m particularly interested in the backup RBs and the Kasper/Sanders battle…I really think it might end up being more important than it seems now.

The score,s not supposed to matter much in preseason, but screw that I don’t want to lose to fucking Detroit. GO BROWNS!

Victorious warriors win first and then go to war, while defeated warriors go to war first and then seek to win.

Is Bodden really not as good as both of their starting CB’s? I’m surprised that he’s just the nickelback. I thought he was pretty good here in Cleveland – was I wrong, or is Detroit just stupid?

The best thing probably is to hit [Grady] 2nd -- Jay

From what I’ve read, he just hasn’t performed too well since coming to Detroit. I’d have to read up on it more to find out if it’s due to past injuries or lack of chemistry at this point.

Alright, time for the rebound game and the QB controversy.

by Estonianzulu on Aug 23, 2008 3:46 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I know they gave up points, but that was a good showing by the defense, IMO. Alex Hall looked REALLY good, Rogers was stopping the run well. The only problem there was that they couldn’t close out on sacks, Kitna was able to buy time and get a completion. I won’t even blame the secondary, because very few can cover a WR for 5-7 seconds there. Nice start by the D.

I couldn’t agree more on Alex Hall. He looks like he is taking to the role as an OLB very well.

Alex Hall will be a beast and I really hope Romeo gives him a lot of playing time this season.

He is obviously better than McMillian and that is with only a training camp under his belt.

by Bernie19Kosar on Aug 23, 2008 7:24 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, I thought McMillan really didn’t do anything to stand out amongst the crowd when the backups came in. On the same note, Hall was making plays with the starting units out there.

I have been very happy with what I have seen from the D-Line in the second drive, (I missed the first drive thanks to the NFL network crapping out). The run defense has looked very good and Shawn Rogers is unblockable. If he plays at this level all year, watch out.

I know the coaches like Jason Wright, but to me he looks like an very average RB.

by Bernie19Kosar on Aug 23, 2008 4:35 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Completely agree. I like Wright as the 3rd down back, but if Lewis misses time this year, Jerome Harrison is the guy I want getting most of the carries.

I am now worried about our pass defense. Dan Orlafsky (Or however you spell it) should not be dicing our secondary.

Kamerion Wimbley missed a tackle and it cost a 35 yard TD.

Brady’s weight distribution is horrible right now. He’s trying to place everything and not throwing. He has very little follow-through and is barely using his back leg. He obviously doesn’t have his confidence right now. In college, he would simply step back and throw and he isn’t doing that right now.

by Fundamentals on Aug 23, 2008 4:59 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

His throw to Stallworth was perfect though. Only Stallworth could have caught it.

by Bernie19Kosar on Aug 23, 2008 5:00 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

it seems to me like Quinn is getting pressured every time he steps back and the plus is that he hasn’t taken the loss and he has been able to get rid of the ball. Other than that he is very average right now at best. He isnt playing his best at all.

by kjc on Aug 23, 2008 5:10 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

The Lions look like they are blitzing on every down and the O-Line is having problems picking it up.

by Bernie19Kosar on Aug 23, 2008 5:12 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Also, not trying to defend quinn, even though I am a fan, but it looks like he is getting no help out there other than Winslow and Stallworth. I mean it just looks like everything is going wild and nobody seems to be on the same page.

a few examples… a couple of bad snaps when quinn wasnt ready…. winslow ran a pass route on a run play…. It seemed a few times that Sanders ran the wrong route…. and Wilson is back to his below average self.

Ladies and gentlemen, I give you reasons 1-17 why Kevin Kasper won’t make this team: injuries. He simply cannot stay healthy. I honestly think that he is probably the 3rd or 4th best WR on the roster, but what good does it do you if he can’t make it through a game?

by Fundamentals on Aug 23, 2008 6:10 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I've seen enough..........

The Browns are gonna get wacked by the Cowpies in the opener and any other top team they have to play. Unfortunatley, we have to play many good teams this year. They don’t play with any emotion or fire. I hate to say this and I hope I am wrong but I see. a big step backwards for this team this year

I disagree, I think that we need to get healthy and if we can get all the key players healthy than we will do fine this year. Im thinking 9-7.

I admire your optimism but is this the best we can do against DETROIT?

Without Edwards, Anderson, Lewis, Pool, Jones, and Cribbs… maybe it was just about what should be expected. Plus, lets remember that it is preseason still.

The defense looked better than I was expecting in all honesty. The offense really struggled.

by Fundamentals on Aug 23, 2008 7:27 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

You are putting way too much emphasis on the preseason. When you take a look back at the preseason every year, it doesn’t matter what team it is: it rarely matches what they actually do in the regular season.

I know we’re looking more for the little things that aren’t happening that causes the disappointment, but more than anything I think it’s a preseason for a coordinators. Run a bunch of plays, whether you think they’ll work to perfection or not, and then trim your playbook. That playbook of good plays is deployed on gameday, resulting in some better football.

Want to know why the players look like they don't care?

They don’t. It is the preseason. They don’t get paid to take big hits, try hard, hurt themselves, etc. YET.

It’s like having your employer tell you “hey, you have to go in to work for 4 weeks to get ready to go to work for the next 17+, we aren’t going to pay you for the first 4, and nothing you do in the first 4 will count.” You might go in if it’s a good enough job, but you aren’t going to be happy about it.

Remember last preseason?

Post Game thoughts;

1. Our offensive line will have to pick up blitzes better. The Lions blitzed the crap out of Quinn and he did not handle it as well as he should of. Too many throws off his back foot and rushing. He looked like a rookie QB.

2, Wimbley cannot let Kitna get away from sacks. If he is going to take the next step to total awesomeness (that is not a word), he cannot miss tackles that go for TD’s and letting QB’s escape sacks. Simple as that.

3. Alex Hall looks like a player. He is very fluid in the open field and looks like he gets pressure.

4. Shawn Rogers is a beast. He was totally unblockable. I really hope that he can play that way all year. He is a complete and total B.A. It seemed like he spent his entire game in the offensive backfield.

5. It looks to me like Tucker loves to blitz his DB’s but not his LB’s. Maybe he is keeping some stuff under wraps for the regular season but he loves the CB blitz. Something that Grantham seemed to hate doing.

6. The special teams looked better. Coldn’t have been much worse than last week.

7. Travis Wilson sucks. I know a crappy WR when I see one (What’s up Quincy Morgan?), and Travis Wilson sucks. Paul Hubbard isn’t far behind. Ken Dorsey is a very reserved QB and he was visably angry with Hubbard on a deep pass in the fourth.

8. Issac Sowells sucks too. If we are keeping him just because he can play multiple positions, that is a waste. No sense in keeping a guy that sucks just because he can suck at different places on the field.

9. Jason Wright is an average RB, whiler Jerome Harrison is a difference maker. He is a poor mans Warrick Dunn. (Make that a very poor man). He is dangerous in space, can handle carries and has good hands.

10. The Super Bowl winning Giants went 1-3 in preseason last year. Pre-season does not matter. As long as we get out healthy. The preseason is nothing more than glorified practice. Nothing more, nothing less.

11. Hines Ward is a punk.

by Bernie19Kosar on Aug 23, 2008 8:03 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

4: Rogers is a beast, at times, Detroit got a little tired of his lack of an ideal work ethic. Hopefully the new surroundings will keep him at his top level.

Dude the Browns haven't had a receiver as good as Hines Ward

Since Paul Warfield. Why don’t you get a life and quit obsessing about the Pittsburgh Steelers.

by maryrose on Aug 24, 2008 1:17 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I don’t recall Hines Ward ever having a season like Braylon last year. In fact, when Braylon calls it a career, we will all have forgotten your post here because it won’t be a comparison

by Roger Dorn on Aug 24, 2008 1:21 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

That is far too premature

Hines Ward has already earned Hall of Fame credentials. He is a Super Bowl MVP. Braylon Edwards is not even close yet to Canton. And certainly no one the Browns have had since Warfield was either.

by maryrose on Aug 24, 2008 10:04 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

If you’re choosing to punish Edwards for simply being younger than Ward, then I see no merit in an argument of who is better at this point. Sure, Ward has had a tremendous career, but poll non-Browns and non-Steeler fans and I’d imagine more people would want Edwards on their team.

by ChrisPokorny on Aug 24, 2008 11:40 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Of course you would choose Edwards over Ward

as to “who is better at this point.” That’s ridiculous. Ward isn’t even Pittsburgh’s top receiver anymore. I would hope that Edwards is better. You would also choose Ryan Braun over Ken Griffey “at this point.” I am in no way punishing Edwards for being younger. I am simply not projecting him into the Hall of Fame. He may get there someday, but after one Pro Bowl season he is not Hines Ward.

by maryrose on Aug 24, 2008 11:54 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

“Dude the Browns haven’t had a receiver as good as Hines Ward since Paul Warfield.”

"Of course you would choose Edwards over Ward as to "who is better at this point."

Ward may be a little on the downside of his career, but he’s not Jerry Rice in terms of lack of productivity during his last few years or so. That’s why I questioned your first statement. Of course if Edwards’ career ended tomorrow he wouldn’t have the same career stats as Ward. I guess it all depends on how you intended to use the the phrase “as good”. To me, Edwards’ year last season was as good if not better than Ward has ever had. That’s not a diss either; Edwards trounced almost everyone in the NFL except for Randy Moss.

My Take

Extremely dissapointed in the “O” line, the area that this team should excel at is the “O” Line.
Browns are going to give up a ton of points, I don’t care if its inter-sqaud, preseason, or regular season.
No more Travis Wilson, no more Jason Wright.
Why didn’t the Browns go after Lamont Jordan or pick up some other back in the draft?

I understand the argument of this is just preseason, however this team looks horrible in all aspects of the game. It is one thing if they were struggling in one area or two, but everywhere except Phil Dawson.
Browns need to tighten it up.

I’m pretty sure we stayed away from a back in the draft because finding one in the fourth-round wasn’t our long term goal. Sure, maybe we’d get some productivity out of a guy in round four or five, but probably nothing more than Wright or Harrison in season one. Our aim should be more for a long-term investment — which will come either next year, or the year after.

The O-Line has been oddly disappointing. However, all of the offensive problems started when one man left the field: Braylon Edwards (since that first drive against the Jets). I’m almost convinced that the impact he has on an opposing team’s defense is more important than anything else.

by ChrisPokorny on Aug 24, 2008 12:35 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

My point is. Lewis is 31 years old, and that is old for a running back, and then a huge drop off. It is beyond me why Savage did not address this. Lewis gets hurt the Browns are going to be in big trouble.
Hey I love Braylon, but I can’t place that much importance on him alone. The O line has to pick up blitzes, run block, etc… This team starts with that line.

"Have You heard of the Boom on Mizar 5?"

by Grockcubs on Aug 24, 2008 1:15 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

If you address the backup RB situation this year, then you don’t address he defensive line again. Savage chose the defensive line, and we have to either accept that or not as fans.

Yes, even without Edwards, the offensive line should be performing a lot better.

Without Braylon Edwards, we are not the same team. There is no sense in getting worked up over these games, we aren’t going to win without 5 or 6 of our best players!

by Roger Dorn on Aug 24, 2008 1:23 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Here’s some thoughts.
We need to sign a WR. Shouldn’t be too hard to find somebody after cut downs.
We need to get another OL. It shouldn’t be too find somebody after cut downs (get Kirk Barton from the Bears).
We need another HB with better upside than Jason Wright. The guy I would target is Michael Bush with the Raiders. Could we trade a TE and a draft pick for him (maybe Jason Wright, too)?

A pre-season wake up call maybe the reality check this team needs. Better than last year’s debacle against the Steelers opening week. We faced a healthy Lions squad playing mainly starters, would did you expect?

I disagree on the wide receiver topic. Remember, last year we got through with Edwards and Jurevicius. Carter was our third receiver. I would’ve loved having a more reliable No. 3 or No. 4 this year, but we’re not really going to find a cheap WR out there that is better than Wilson, Steptoe, or Sanders.

At offensive line, our biggest need is a backup offensive tackle. When Ryan Tucker comes back, I wouldn’t be surprised if he starts at guard quite soon into the season, which makes us lose the option somewhat of him as a backup tackle. James Lee has shown some potential, but not spot-starting material yet. Sowells just needs to go, but will end up on the roster as a placeholder if my predictions hold true.

I don’t think the Raiders will give up Michael Bush, and if they do, it’ll cost a lot more than a TE, low draft pick, or Jason Wright (not A LOT more I guess, but…meh). If Lewis stays healthy this year, a new backup running back should not be a priority at this point. We were relatively fine with the production Wright provided last year when needed — now we’ll see if we can work Jerome Harrison into the offense a little more.
