Joe Horn Volunteers to be Cleveland's Third Receiver
Joe Horn is volunteering his services. He wants to be our third receiver. I think it's a great idea with little downside, other than cutting Steve Sanders.
Think if Jurevicius returns in October our lineup would be:
Edwards
Stallworth
Horn
Jurevicius
Pretty impressive.

I’d be nice to have him, but I’d rather spend the money on a CB.
Whose the best all-time special teamer in NFL history? It's JOSH CRIBBS!

1. Can he still jump?
2. Is a 36 year old Horn as fast as a 34 year old Jurevicious?
If both answers are yes, I would love to have Joe Horn on the Browns. Only for cheap though.

At this point, we clearly need to trade for a big name defensive back.....
But a trade like that isn’t going to happen until some teams open up 0-6.

0-6 would put us past the trading deadline, wouldn't it?
All I know is that it does in Madden.
What big name DB do you suggest we go after? And using what as trade bait? Are you really suggesting that we put all the chips on this year, and trust that a guy like Anthony Henry or Lito Sheppard is our savior?
If we “clearly” need to do anything, it is build a lead with our crazy-talented offense, force the opposing team to pass, send a crapton of blitzers at the opposing QB, and pray that they get there.
Then, trade a QB at the end of the season, pick up MORE draft picks, draft a couple of good DBs, a good pass rusher, and maybe a WR and “the RB of the future”.

The trade deadline is October 16, which is right after Week 6. If a team does not have a bye until after Week 6, then they could have a record of 0-6.
I think that’s how it works every year, though the trades are rare of course.

I’ve always been a fan of Horn, but we have a 3rd receiver, whose initials are K.W.
For most offenses (including the Browns’ scheme) they “starting” TE is really a TE in name only and for fantasy football purposes. Winslow plays more like a slot receiver/half back split-out than he does a TE.
Not that I have a problem with dumping Steve Sanders, but when/if(?) Jurevicius gets healthy, either he or Horn become the 5th option in the passing game. While neither expects to be the focal point of a team’s passing game at this point in their career, I doubt they want to be the token 4th receiver in spread packages either.

I agree — not enough reps for Horn with Edwards, Stallworth, and Winslow.
I don’t think Horn would be overly selfish, but I think for what we’d pay for him, he wouldn’t be getting enough looks. Jurevicius would get the looks to the contrary, because he can be a third-down specialist still, and therefore earn his dues.

How guaranteed is it that Jurevicious will get healthy? I don’t remember for sure, but hasn’t his return has been bumped back a couple times already….as in he was going to be fine for camp, then for the opener, now 6 weeks into the season. I think it unlikely he won’t be ready for Week 7, but what if?
Also,Jurevicious would be eligible to return right before the trade deadline, correct? I wouldn’t be opposed to signing Horn and then having the option to trade him if/when Jurevicious comes. If he performed well, I’d imagine that we could trade him somewhere. If not, as long as he signs for a small enough salary, we could just cut him.
I don’t think this is the move we need to make, but if it makes us better and he’d agree to an appropriate contract, I don’t see how it could hurt. Can he play DB??

No idea on Joe J. For all we know, he may have played his last game as a Brown. But I have no knowledge/opinion on that one way or the other.
As Chris mentioned above, trades are rare in the NFL. Horn has been released from a team that could already use veteran leadership, and if he’s shopping himself to other teams/GMs, he must not be in high demand. Acting as a 4th receiver for 6 weeks is not likely to increase his trade value at all if it’s non-existent at this point in the training camp season.

“For most offenses (including the Browns’ scheme) they "starting" TE is really a TE in name only and for fantasy football purposes. Winslow plays more like a slot receiver/half back split-out than he does a TE.”
I don’t think anyone (besides maybe Winslow himself) has disagreed with this.

That should only be the second half of that quote.
"Winslow plays more like a slot receiver/half back split-out than he does a TE."

To revisit this, there was an interesting item on ESPN’s Football Blogs today mentioning that if a veteran player is signed AFTER Week 1, the contract is not guaranteed for the full amount, only the prorated amount for each week played.
This has no direct bearing on Joe Horn and the Browns and whether or not they bring him on board, but it does suggest that the possibility may be stronger after the first game.
