Whether they like it or not, one of these teams is finishing the preseason with a win.
The Browns have not played too well in the preseason, but at least expectations are still high. The same can't be said for the Bears though -- I'm sorry, but I believe the Rex Grossman / Kyle Orton quarterback battle was far worse than the battle between Tim Couch / Kelly Holcomb. Give me Couch and Holcomb any day over Grossman and Orton. The Bears at least made the right decision with who they have to work with though, choosing Orton as their starter a few weeks ago.
What do the Browns need to accomplish today? I don't really expect anything out of any team in the fourth preseason game -- it's a "why bother" type of contest, unless the coach is trying to decide who the 53rd man on his roster should be still. Now, let's get to some pre-game digest...
Pre-Game Digest(more to be added if as the day moves along if necessary):
- We didn't see much of CB Travis Daniels last week, but he did play in the game (probably on special teams). I would like to see him with the second-team defense to test at what level he's ready to contribute on opening day.
- Over at the OBR, a user stated that Bernie Kosar, who was on Tony Rizzo's radio show, overheard Romeo Crennel telling the team that the first units would be on the field "until they looked good". That is such a loose phrase though; one average field goal drive during the first quarter is probably sufficient.
- The injury list at this point might as well read "all starters have the fourth preseason game off". In reality, most of them could probably play if they needed to, but will justifiably be held out until next week.
- The players ruled out are the same as last week: QB Derek Anderson, RB Jamal Lewis, WR Braylon Edwards, WR Joshua Cribbs, LB Willie McGinest, S Sean Jones, and S Brodney Pool.
- There are still wide receiver jobs to be won, but I simply do not see how one of the spots could go to Paul Hubbard. Two spots will be available for sure between Travis Wilson, Steve Sanders, and Syndric Steptoe.
- There is a different story brewing at the cornerback position. It looks as though our top for cornerbacks we'll be Brandon McDonald, Eric Wright, Terry Cousin, and Travis Daniels. We could carry a fifth, but that's not a guarantee. The battle is between Jereme Perry, A.J. Davis, and Gerard Lawson. I originally had Perry on my 53-man roster, but this game may sway me to Davis or Lawson.
- It's not out of the question that we'll only run with three safeties, but I see us going with four. Nick Sorensen and Mike Adams will start at safety again, so it's there backup positions to lose.
- I believe this will be David McMillan's final game in a Cleveland Browns uniform, especially with the rumblings that Antwan Peek will be ready-to-go for Week 1.
- Unfortunately for the Cieslak brothers, I think this will be Brad Cieslak's final appearance with the Browns too. Crennel and company seem set at tight end, barring them placing Martin Rucker on the injured reserve. Either way, I'd like to thank A. Cieslak for his contributions to our community.
- BREAKING NEWS: Dallas Cowboys cornerback Pacman Jones has been reinstated to the NFL, and will be facing the Browns in Week 1. Our third receiver better be ready, because Jones will probably be playing the nickel to start the season.
- Moohead will be streaming the game online in great quality, if things go as planned.
This is the official gameday thread for the Cleveland Browns' fourth and final preseason game, as they try to come away with their first victory against the also winless Chicago Bears. All comments regarding the game as it goes on and immediately following the game should remain in this thread. Enjoy the game, and GO BROWNS!!!

Believe it or not, I think Orton is worse than Grossman

The separation is thin in my opinion, but overall I’d say Grossman has more potential. I think Orton can at least do a better job at managing the game…not that it’ll get them anywhere.

Updated main post with a few more tidbits, including the breaking news of Pacman Jones’ re-instatement for Week 1.
BTW, unlike the past two weeks, I’ll be around to chime in my comments during the game here in this thread. The past two weeks, I’ve had to watch the game on tape delay due to other engagements (won’t happen during most of the regular season, except on maybe the Monday Nighters).

Thanks for the shout out. I’ll be watching the game here in Chicago with a nice group of people all hoping Brad gets some serious playing time and maybe gets in the end zone against the team he grew up rooting for.
And you are damn right about the Bears. That QB situation is worse than Holcomb/Couch by FAR.

First down Browns on first play :) Much better start than last week…

Was that Travis Wilson? For all anyone knew, he had been killed in a training camp accident.

Heh, in a way, he’s made more noise the past two weeks than any other time by not coming through with a starting role opportunity.

Well that was a good drive, I’ll take it given the last couple of games.

Yep, nice little field goal drive — I wonder if that’ll be good enough for the offensive line to leave now. Quinn should’ve had that last throw to Winslow though.

I’m dissapointed but not really surprised. Would have liked to see a TD drive there but three is better than nothing.

Steptoe in the locker room with a shoulder injury — questionable to return.

This is what home-field will do for you ;) (two straight penalties on Bears).
Come on, HAVE to have a pass rush now…

WOOO! Boo the screen, but nice hit off the edge, forcing the interception to Brandon McDonald!

Upon review, the hit was made by #98, otherwise known as Robaire Smith.

Hopefully those big fella’s on the Dline will stay a little bit more fresh this year, due to our two new guys.

Wilson and Sanders both playing well. Since when does Travis care if he makes this team?

I thought Donovan went a little overboard early on:
-After one catch, he said Sanders was already looking good
-After just attempting a kick return, Steptoe was looking good
-After a slant route, Wilson was looking good
Takes more than one play ;) After about a quarter though, Wilson and Sanders are doing what’s expected of them.

Ok, almost through the game now and Wilson and Sanders both still look solid. I just wonder if it is too late for Travis.

Nice college option play :D 10-0 Browns starters on top.

About as good of drive as you could hope for. An INT leads to a rushing TD and the offense looked decent.
I’m intrigued here. I think we learn something about how bad DA’s injury is here. If Quinn comes out soon, some of those reports of DA’s injury being worse than reported could be true. If Quinn stays out there for a while, Anderson will easily be the Week 1 starter.

And Bears fans probably actually believe they have a shot at beating the Colts Week 1, lol. Leave it to Chicago to make us look solid, though I think our home field advantage is shining through again.

Okay, Quinn comes out after the first quarter. I think this tells us something, honestly.

Uh-oh.
Alos, what happened to Hadnot? (
I’m not watching the game)

Hadnot had a few people fall on him with his leg in the air. It looked like a hip thing from my non-medical, non-knowing perspective.

The Brown’s site is saying it’s a knee injury. Steptoe’s also has been hurt. That’s not good.

Woo, a screen play worked! Sorry don’t mean to laugh, but who saw Derrick Morse almost break his own leg/knee while falling after the possible fumble?

Why was Edwards making friends with a Ravens fan (Michael Phelps)?
It’ll be worth it only if he converts him to a Browns fan, and has him show up at games in Cleveland gear.

Grossman leads a 95-yard drive. Don’t like to see someone score on us, but kind of cool to see Brandon Rideau looking good for the second week in a row.

For all the catches Wilson had in the first half, the drop on a beautiful throw in stride is the one that stands out most of all. I don’t think they’ll cut him because of that, but still…ugh…

Chase Pittman is now slow to get up…left leg. BTW, this third-string Bears QB doesn’t look bad.

Key doesn’t get credit with a sack due to the chop block taking precedent, but another notable play for him.
