CRIBBS TO HOLD OUT??
Rumors are flying that Joshua wants a new deal....
With Bears return specialist, and possible No. 1 wideout, Devin Hester cashing in, another high-profile return specialist wants a new deal, too.
According to James Walker of ESPN.com, Josh Cribbs of the Browns is looking to restructure a six-year, $6 million deal that he signed before the 2007 season.
Keep an eye on this one. As we hear it, there are rumblings that Cribbs might be planning to boycott practice unless and until he gets what he wants. (He has been “injured” of late with a hamstring pull, so perhaps the boycotting already has begun.)
Per NFLPA records, Cribbs is due to earn a base salary of $620,000 in 2008, $620,000 in 2009, $635,000 in 2010, $650,000 in 2011, and $790,000 in 2012.
Cribbs joined the Browns as an undrafted free agent in 2006.

Cribbs is definitely underpaid when you consider his impact compared to other players, but I think a holdout would be ridiculous of him (though I don’t believe he intends to hold out either). He chose to sign the contract just one year ago, and now he knows we’re trying to make commitments to Winslow and Jones.

Agree 100% What Hester did was laughable and Cribbs holding out would be even more laughable. I would be disappointed if we so quickly renegotiated his contract.

How often does a player report to camp and then holdout?
That just seems weird to me.

that was my first thought.
If he was gonna hold out, why report? Can’t say I’m too worried about this one.

Im fairly sure that Phil will play hardball with him if he holds out. Although his contribution is really valuable Phil cant afford to let his club turn into a holdout and win kinda place. I could see it maybe if Cribbs was a two or three years into his contract but he is just a year in. Cribbs elected to mitigate his risk by signing that deal, he could have signed a one year. Unfortuantly, for him the long term deal didn’t work out so great due off of his performance.
Jones/Edwards/Winslow/Cribbs in that order.

Cribbs holdout
I am not worried about this holdout. I believe that RC and Phil have brought the team first philosophy into cleveland. Cribbs had to come up from an undrafted FA and the browns acted in good faith to give him a “decent” contract. Cribs wont holdout, If he did, i see the browns trading him just to reinforce the point of team first attitude

Joshua is a great guy. His agent is doing what any agent is paid to do. You don’t get more money if you don’t ask for more money. Cribbs is worth much more than the Browns are currently paying him. Whether his agent believes a holdout is productive, will determine whether there is a holdout. Savage needs to send a strong message publicly to all free agents, but at the same time assure Joshua’s agent privately that there will probably be a reassessment done at the end of this year. But this promise must come with a guarantee that this information remain private.

Savage needs to send a strong message to all agents (correction).

Bottom line:
-If he wants a better deal; we understand what the business side of the game involving agents has come down too, so that’s fine.
-If he holds out (which he won’t), his prick-o-meter (which doesn’t exist) will develop.

great letter from cribbs' agent ..

how smart is he to use andre davis as an example?
and here is doerschuk paraphrasing savage re cribbs ..
Earlier today, Phil Savage made it clear the Browns appreciate Cribbs’ play and his attitude. Savage suggested nothing will be done with Cribbs’ contract in the short term, but he also said – I forget the language but this is an accurate paraphrase – the Browns are neither so cold and so stupid that they’d let Cribbs bring what he brings at the relative poverty rate his current deal amounts to.

non guaranteed contracts
if it was any other sport, i would absolutely agree that the team management should hold players to contracts whenever possible.
ferry played varejao and pavlovic’s holdouts exactly right, even as much as it cost the team the first half of last season.
but in the nfl, generally contracts are not guaranteed. cribbs’ deal is not guaranteed. the team can cut him any time and not owe those last few years, even if because of injury.
