Browns Win |
(The table layout above is credited to Pride of Detroit, our Lions' SB Nation affiliate. I'm using it until I have time to whip something up specifically for DBN.)
The Browns' first preseason game of the year will be a little overshadowed by the Jets' sudden addition of future Hall of Fame quarterback Brett Favre, who made the trip to Cleveland for a 6:00 PM press conference.
Nonetheless, our minds won't be focused on Favre, no matter how much it's talked about: we want to see what the 2008-2009 Cleveland Browns will bring to the table. We're not getting a full plate with players like Kellen Winslow and Lawrence Vickers scheduled to sit out, but the plate will still be more than satisfying.
Pre-Game Digest:
- If you overlooked my training camp battles article posted late last night (or early this morning, in reality), then check it out.
- A user over at the OBR posted a possible way to view the Browns / Jets game online if you are not a Cleveland resident. If you're going to try this, I suggest you try to install the software prior to the game starting.
- If you missed it, LB Beau Bell had his knee scraped and will miss at least two weeks. With that, David McMillan will probably get more of a shot at outside linebacker since Shantee Orr will be needed at both inside and outside linebacker after D'Qwell Jackson and Andra Davis leave the game.
- Remember, it'll shake out this way, roughly:
- 1st Quarter: Derek Anderson & First String
- 2nd Quarter: Brady Quinn & Second String
- 3rd Quarter: Brady Quinn & Second/Third String
- 4th Quarter: Ken Dorsey & Third String
- Last, but not least, let's hope for an injury-free game.
This is the official gameday thread for the Cleveland Browns' first preseason game of the season, as they take on the New York Jets. All comments regarding the game as it goes on and immediately following the game should remain in this thread. Enjoy the game, and GO BROWNS!!!

On the poll earlier in the week, I said that I wasn’t that excited about the game tonight. However, all day today I’ve done nothing but think about this game and coming home to watch it. I cannot wait right now for football, no matter how little it really matters.
I wore my Browns hat and an orange shirt today…saw quite a few people downtown with some team gear on this morning too.

Dinkins isn't doing himself any favors
He just straight up stopped blocking on the 2nd running play.
DA looks good.
I hope we are just not blitzing at all because it is the preseason. The pass rush looks weak so far.
I have a full on erection right now.

When they drop that many guys back, I absolutely love it.
"Mixed emotions. Rather see him hit PEDroia [with that pitch]. I don’t care if he is in the dugout"
In comparison, I’d have to imagine Charlie Frye wouldn’t have run the ball—and if he did, it would’ve been a chase-me-out-of-bounds rollout to the sidelines.

Our players just look like they are steaming with confidence—hell that felt like mid-season form (excluding the errant screen pass).

SBN on mobile isn’t very friendly yet, but according to one of the SBN guys when the new formats were rolling out, they are working on a mobile platform for the site.
I have tried it on my blackberry and it is not good. Once it has a mobile version it will be much easier. Right now, ahhhh not so much.

That’s a bad thing in terms of a game sense. In the first preseason game, you want your starters to at least get a rhythm for a normal first quarter. Now, it’s like more of a scrimmage atmosphere of two half first quarters.

Side note: I liked both of Jason Reda’s kickoffs (one of my guys to watch).

Are you serious? Its tough to say a lot, but on five runs, but the runs went for 3-2-4-1-0. If that pattern stays, I’ll take it.
They didn’t get any pass rush (but how much are they really blitzing in preseason?), but the run D looked good. The four yard rush was a FB handoff. The Jets didn’t get any push in the middle, got a little to the left side on one run.
I agree we didn’t get a pass rush, but I’ll wait to see a few more plays before making a negative assessment (not complaining about your tone; by negative I mean you saying you’re not happy with his performance).
I loved us bottling up the run plays—and Corey Williams actually got into the game on one play, didn’t he?
Dawgs By Nature - Find out why Pittsburgh still sucks.
by Chris Pokorny on Aug 7, 2008 8:15 PM EDT up reply actions
Donovan said so, but I’m not 100% certain since the pre-game report said that he wouldn’t be playing. Of course, WKYC had Williams and Beau Bell in the starting lineup, so I’m doubting them a little bit.
Also, WKYC showed those defensive plays again against the run during this delay. Rogers was getting some really good push from what they showed. He was responsible for at least two of the tackles (even though he didn’t make the tackles) and was getting the center of the Jets line pushed back.
Are they not blitzing because its the preseason, or because its their philosophy? I think it might be the latter, for better or worse.
I hope you are wrong
but I think you are right. Hopefully we blitz a decent amount. Jones is a great blitzer from the safety position. Leon Williams can blitz too. I hope we send them.
Definitely not a student of the game at this point.

I’d have to check that another time, but on first look and first replay I’d blame Quinn for the interception rather than Steptoe. Out in front of him on a route I’m not really fond of…why run a slant right in the center of the defense? I agree with Bernie on those plays…

A.J. Davis beat by Cotchery for an extremely easy touchdown, though it did look like Zack Sorenson bit for the playaction too much. Good execution from the Jets…and a taste of what we’ll have to look forward to if either Wright or McDonald go down.

I think that it was Sorensen’s responsibility to play the middle third there. I am taping the game and can check later, but it looked like Davis tried to pass the WR off to someone, but no one was there.
Yeah, that’s what it looked like to me too. No way would Davis hug the sidelines and blatantly allow the receiver to have a wide open middle.

Lol, god he is brutal. So, you think Sorenson as a corner (where he wont bite on PA as often) would be better than at safety?

Dawgs By Nature - Find out why Pittsburgh still sucks.
On Quinn’s final pass of the drive (and possibly the game)—kind of a bad route having two receivers right on top of each other. That surely caused the defender to be in the right spot.
Dawgs By Nature - Find out why Pittsburgh still sucks.
It doesnt look like the receivers are helping him out much on the routes; seems like there is a lot of confusion in there.
HOWEVER! Good, efficient, price game for Quinn. I’m not terribly butt-hurt that this team has 2 quality qb’s on it’s roster.

I would have liked to see at least ONE long pass by Quinn. I don’t think I’ve seen him throw the ball more than 15 yards down field since he was at ND.
It seems like Chud gave him a few calls in the playbook too for that option, but each time he looked and looked before throwing underneath.

Quinn: 13-of-17 for 133 yards and a pick. Nice scramble for 11 yards. Not a great day because there were a lot of short routes, but efficient enough for a first preseason game.

Dawgs By Nature - Find out why Pittsburgh still sucks.
Bernie’s man-crush is in at QB now. He’s getting a little extra playing time as a result of the delay earlier.
Dawgs By Nature - Find out why Pittsburgh still sucks.
Wooo!!! Rucker lookin’ like a powerhouse. Good throw by Dorsey too, though a more savvy linebacker probably could’ve reached up and picked that one.
Dawgs By Nature - Find out why Pittsburgh still sucks.
Rucker looks really good. My expectations were quite low for him in this game because not much has been said about him in practice. He looks good, as does Wilson, and Louis Leonard. Pittman has shown flashes, but also has guessed and gotten pushed around a lot. We NEED an OLB to step up and get to the QB.
From my fun night assessment...
On the other end of the field, Reda was at work, and overall I was very impressed by the shots he was delivering through the uprights. His kicks from 40, 45, 50, and 55 yards were all perfect line drives through the uprights with room to spare. I didn’t get a great look at his kicks from when he moved to the right/left hashmarks, but I do think that he was not as strong as Dawson with respect to that skill.
Reda from 26 yards on the right hashmark: as bad of a make as you can get
Reda from 39 yards with the ball in the middle: drilled it perfectly
Dawgs By Nature - Find out why Pittsburgh still sucks.
Cargile was way late on Clowney’s second touchdown of the game…
I do think it’s one of the most puzzling things in football when I see the QB run a playaction fake while the running back is already blocking a blitzer basically…and then on top of it the defense bites for it.
None of the backup DBs have shown a thing today—Jereme Perry is not included in my statement (because he’ll make the team). It’s no wonder we haven’t heard about any sleepers…not when Clowney gets 163 yards on you.
Dawgs By Nature - Find out why Pittsburgh still sucks.
Has James been beaten at all?
He was in on the play you are referring to, but it was Cover 2 and you are right it was Cargile’s responsibility there.
It’s mostly seemed like Davis; haven’t heard James mentioned at all so either Ratliff wasn’t looking his way, or he’s been going a manageable job.

The big gripe I take out of this game is the lack of execution on screen plays. Probably about four-five attempts during the game with none of them turning out very successful…

Like Bernie said…how do you go from the 45-yard line to the 5-yard line when you’re 0-for-your-last-12 (Dorsey).
Fun game; would’ve liked to have seen Hubbard or Rucker pull in a catch at the end there though—they each had plays that would’ve quite frankly been gimmies to Edwards and Winslow.
