Being a Browns Fan
The Dallas Cowboys have been called "America's Team." The Pittsburgh Steelers have been known to refer to the US as "Steeler Nation." And before Favre left Green Bay for New York, the Packers had quite a devoted following. But there is one team, one fan base that can arguably state, they are the best and most loyal fans in america...The Cleveland Browns. Wait, what? The Cleveland Browns?! Really? The same team who is 50-94 with only one playoff appearance since being reincarnated in 1999?

That's right, the Cleveland Browns have the largest fan following of any major NFL team. Now before I get hit with a barrage a little yellow towels, let me make it known that the only reason the general public doesn't think of Cleveland fans first is because the winning team will always, i repeat, ALWAYS get the face time on camera. I would like to see how many towels wave in San Diego during a 4-12 Steeler season.
Now It has been stated here in "yinzerville" that the Steelers have the largeset fan base. I can see why some would think that, but before you stain that into your brains, let me bring two words to the table...Browns Backers. Also known as the Official Fan Club of the Cleveland Browns. They are chapters all over the world! I dont see any terrible towels in Germany! I'm sure there are some steeler fans everywhere, after all, you can't go into a major city and not find a steeler bar....just like you cant go to a major city and not find a Browns Backers Chapter.
Another thing i hear alot of here, is that the Steelers have the largest female following. Well please don't hate me for coming across as sexist, but that kind of makes me chuckle. There is nothing more annoying, than a drunk chick in a steeler jersey yelling at the tv in pure ignorance! People who know absolutely nothing about football, please do me a favor...on sundays, keep your trap shut! If the steelers sucked, these girls would be wearing whatever shirt Aeropostle or Abercombie told them to wear. I have no problem with female football fans, the educated ones!
So what sets Browns fans apart of every other fan-base in america? Well for starters, we continually sell out every game (even with a sub par team). We are the only city who got it's team back after they moved (yes we will give a big assist to the Rooney's for this, again, we thank you for the support). Name another team that will continue year in and year out to have such a devoted following even with a sub par team.
We as Browns fans, are the most deserving of a winning team. It's about pride, passion, loyalty, and honor. It's going to your first game as a child with your father and having him teach you the game of football from the Dawg Pound. It's putting on your Eric Metcalf jersey and diving in the mud in your backyard. It's your dad telling you stories about Paul Brown, Jim Brown, Otto, Leroy, Lou, and Marion. Its about reliving the days of Kosar, Newsome, Slaughter, Mack, Pruit, and Matthews. Its marching the streets of Cleveland in protest of your team's moving and demanding their return. It's praying every year that this, THIS FINALLY, is the year. Its barking with thousands of other fans decked from head to toe in Orange and Brown. we are dawgs by nature, not nurture. You either have it or you don't. you cant fake it. This is our city...Cleveland! Her followers may be scattered throughout the nation, but we all bleed the same colors...Orange and Brown!

come on buddy....
the brownies DO NOT have the the largest fan following…..even people from cleveland would admit that. as to the best and most loyal….well, that’s a matter of opinion and you’re entitled to it, but largest? look, i’ve resided, not traveled through or visited, but resided in every state but nine and in every one i’ve met steelers fans by the droves. in every one there is a steelers bar, not just a bar that caters to steelers fans, but owned and operated by them. with a couple of exceptions (atlanta, houston, honolulu, and charlotte) these have not been major cities. now certain teams fans are very prevalent throughout the states (dallas, sf, gb, ny) and every now and then you’ll see people in their colors but there’s other teams you never see outside of that team’s market (jax, ariz, tenn, balt) and i would put clevland somewhere in the middle of those two. no way, though, does any team even come close to matching pittsburgh’s fan base. we are truly a steeler nation.

I love it. the old “we have the most and the best fans because i say so.” don’t you think you see steelers fans in other cities becuase you are one yourself and that’s what your looking for? I live in Pittsburgh and I hear this crap all the time. we are the best because i say so.
here’s some actual data on the best fans in football, using actual statistics. it takes out all emotion. and this was done in 2006 when the steelers were champs and the browns were crap. make sure you click all the links to read the full chart, all the categories they ranked, and their methodology.

notice a couple of things. the steelers don’t even come close to selling out their own stadium (despite hearing all the time hear that someone has to die to get tickets). also, the browns fans win hands down in some of the coldest weather, some of the poorest fans, and rooting for one of the worst teams.
there’s no doubting the steelers have had much better players for some time now, but it’s not even close on which team has the most loyal, devoted fans. not even close.
now come on se7ens, let’s hear some more i’m the best cause i say so.

i know i know, the steelers have a great following. all im saying is that if the Browns were as successful as the steelers have been as of late, you’d see alot more orange and brown around town, thats all. the winner gets the face time, simple as that

I love The Browns
Browns need to win a Super Bowl, or how about getting to one.
Dallas, Pittsburg and Green Bay are far more reconized than the Browns

no problem man, happy to enlighten.
now here’s a list that good old se7en would love. of course it’s from the four letter word ESPN. note along the right side their ranking categories. none of them are actually legit. they are all some version of “this team is good in this way because I said so.”
http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/story?page=simmons/080912
I love this line in the article about the steelers ticket sales:
“The season-ticket waiting list is extremely long and the consecutive sellout streak of 299 games, including playoffs, is unbelievable.”
that’s right, it is unbelievable. just because you sell out a stadium does not mean the people are actually there (reference the link from my earlier post). that’s called a corporate sellout.
But even if I do grant the steelers the number one spot on this pathetic list, the browns are number 3. so the average rank is browns 2 and steelers 11. once again not even close.
One last thing. I have lived, worked, or vacationed in EVERY state in this country and guess what, I’ve seen tons more browns fans than steelers fans. there you go, we win. see how easy that was.

I love to be a Steeler fan and hear a brownie actually admit that their team sucks...
It makes me sooo proud to be a Steeler fan. I have to give you mad props for thanking the Rooney’s!!! You seem like a great person! I am sorry you support a team that uproots themselves and calls themselves a new name. Good for you for being a good fan! As a Steeler fan, I don’t waiver…if we lost all of our games I would be there!!!
To be a winner you have to beat a winner...says a browns fan.

“There is nothing more annoying, than a drunk chick in a steeler jersey yelling at the tv in pure ignorance!”
That statement maybe could qualify as sexist, if it wasn’t so true. I actually saw one girl get up and start screaming obnoxiously, “Go Stillers!”, while clapping wildly…at halftime, during a replay from the first quarter.
