Steelers Game

Seriously this game does not fall on Romeo(bad coaching decisions) or DA(interceptions).  Even the defense held up well.  This had to do with Braylon Edwards.(no i am not a ohio state fan, nor do i think he lacks talent )  This has to do with at least three key moments of the game.  In the first half he had another drop that would have resulted in a key first down. The first DA intrercpetion seemed to be a ball he could have come back on and fought a little harder for.(that just might be me)  Add that with the ball that went right through his hands inside the ten yard line in the fourth quarter.(yeah i know he was goning over the middle, and there was a guy bearing down on him, but the ball was right there in his hands)  This is a guy who IS a top flight receiver and should easily make these plays.  If this type of play keeps up along with Stallworth's injury we're in for a long season.

If you read the Sept. 8 Sports Ilustrated Edwards talks about how he has been waiting his whole life for prime time footlball.  And how all the pressure is on DA.  Well Braylon, DA gave you multiple opportunities, and it seems as though you were not ready.  OH HOW I CAN'T WAIT FOR JJ'S RETURN,

As a Steeler fan

I have to disagree. Braylon dropped balls but it was definately the weather. Hines Ward dropped a bunch of balls too and he’s automatic. You guys lost because of clock management,…period. Also,…the Browns aren’t clutch for some reason,…maybe lack of experience. The Steelers can stink it up all game (and tonight we did),…but when we REALLY need to make plays they usually do. For example when we were pinned down on our own goaline, the O-Line holds up and Hines comes up with the huge catch.

No, you’ve got to be very clear about it.

They’re not clutch because they stink, not for some nebulous unknown reason.

i’ll admit clock management did play a role in this game, but is was far from the primary reason for the loss. How can it be “lack of experience”?

by massbrownsfan on Sep 15, 2008 12:57 AM EDT reply actions

Lack of experience

Just like Espn, madden and all other say. Its hard to become winners. Lack of experience to win every year game in and game out. Yes, great year last year, but the respond to the “paper champions” of the off season, so far isnt going the way, the browns hoped. Long season to go, Lucky for you guys, you always get two cracks at Pittsburgh every year.

throughout the game

I got pretty excited any time the ball was thrown in Braylon’s direction. Last week he dropped some seriously clutch passes, and this week was no different. Yes, the weather had a ton to do with this specifically, but Braylon really needs to work on whatever’s turned him into a butterfingers.

Browns

Also a Steelers fan, and I suppose if I was a Browns fan I would have plenty of problems with the way they played, but watching from the opposing team perspective, I have to say they are good team who played very well in many aspects of the game.

Props to:
Your D-Line – Shuan Rogers is not a human being. I am not sure what species of beast he is, but he is a big beast.
O-Line – not great on run, but looked very good against an excellent Steeler Blitz in pass protection.
Secondary – granted the hurricane stifled the passing game of the Steelers, but for a bunch of rookies they did not look foolish.

As for Braylon. Its tough to say. I didn’t see the Dallas game, but heard he had some big drops there. Then again that dude TO drops a lot of balls and although I would never want him near my team, he’s still a great receiver. I would have to see more of Edwards, to write him off, I would say this game doesn’t prove him to be elite, but also doesn’t make him a bum.

Kellen Winslow, however, is elite.

by SteelerBuddha on Sep 15, 2008 11:15 AM EDT reply actions

How about the QB aspect?

Even with a bum shoulder Big Ben outplayed Anderson by a mile!

by Juannieboy on Sep 15, 2008 11:42 AM EDT up reply actions

True

Big ben is one of the best in the game. He is a winner plain and simple. Anderson – is a good story and could be very good – but he only has one year – and an erratic one at that under his belt. He made poor decisions, didn’t make exceptional plays – considering that he had all day to throw and did not find his big money players.

Then again he was playing in hurricane – against one of the best D’s in the league. So I don’t think its fair to pick on him too much.

My Fears Are Coming True

Being a Browns fan for more than 35 years has taught me that all expectations must be tempered.

But after these two disgraceful exhibitions, I have decided to hide in my basement until the season is over. I worried that the hype was excessive and that this team risked being embarrassed repeatedly on national tv.

Now we can see that the reality is closer to the team that lost in Cincy and Arizona, and not the bunch that hung in there against baltimore.

All I can take away from last night is that the defence seems to have woken up. Otherwise, this was an absolutely putrid performance. How the Browns can be so flat two straight weeks at home is a mystery.

Actually, it’s not a mystery. Take a look at Dick Jauron in Buffalo. He’s got a decent team that never quits. Romeo Crennel looks like a guy in a retirement home wondering when they’re bringing the pudding.

This could be a loooong year for us.

by Pruitt on Sep 15, 2008 11:29 AM EDT reply actions

Not the way I saw it

Look at the national power rankings. According to pretty much everyone out there you played the top two teams in football. No shame in losing those two games. The game against the steelers was played in a hurricane, so you can’t completely get down against your offense for not showing up against the best defense in the league last year – which by all accounts just got better (two great new linebackers and a healthy all pro-safety and lineman.

-you make somewhat intelligent points and I have not had any contact with steelers fans who are rational beings.

by rufio on Sep 15, 2008 10:53 PM EDT up reply actions

Crennel

Defense was excellent. Clock management and playcalling were HORRIBLE. I have always been a big defender of Romeo but last night the coaching staff cost us that game. There is a reason why K2 was so angry he had to be pulled off the field at the end of the game. The fans deserved better. The players deserved better.

Even simple game management like calling time outs at the proper times seemed to be lost on the coaching staff.

by gentryholdem on Sep 15, 2008 11:34 AM EDT reply actions

You can blame it on Edwards if you want to but

Edwards did not have two critical easy for the defense to catch interceptions and a QB rating of shit. Besides Braylon is best we have at receiver but Anderson is not the best we have at QB. Of all RAC’s questionable decisions in this and other games the decision to stick with Anderson while Quinn sits is beyond belief. Name ONE good team Anderson has beaten? Seattle. Period. The Browns will not take the next step with DA. Change the QB or I guarantee a losing season. This loss is on DA totally. If he could have lead them to the end zone the other stupid coaching decisions would not have amounted to squat!

No

I would guess at the start of the season maybe 20% of the fan base still wanted to see Quinn. That number is slowly inching up. If we lose to Balitmore next week you’ll see the Cleveland fanbase freak out and demand to see Quinn play.

by gentryholdem on Sep 15, 2008 12:12 PM EDT up reply actions

No this is not the "common" opinion. It is the "informed, rationale and logical" opinion.

Most of the fans and plenty of posters here think DA is da bomb ( in spite of evidence to the contrary) and not want a QB controversy.

by Juannieboy on Sep 15, 2008 2:34 PM EDT up reply actions

Please go back to the cleveland.com forums.

You must be Brady Quinns agent.

I don’t think DA is “da bomb” but I do think he is a good quaterback who has proved that he can move an offense. You on the other hand have pressed the panic button after two games. By the way, the Giants also started off last year 0-2. As did the 2001 Patriots. Both won the Super Bowl. So once again, go away.

by Bernie19Kosar on Sep 15, 2008 3:01 PM EDT up reply actions

I wish I was his agent.

BTW, DA has proved he can only beat mediorce NFL teams. Just when did he beat a good teams last year besides Seattle? He is 0 and 2 so far. What do you consider his signature win? Are you really comparing the Browns with the Patriots? Your dismissive to “go away” only proves you dont have a leg to stand on with such a point of view.

by Juannieboy on Sep 15, 2008 8:28 PM EDT up reply actions

There are plenty of legs to stand on, you just won’t rationally discuss the topic at an appropriate time.

You just really really feel that Quinn should be the guy, and you won’t hear it any other way. That is why people ask you to go away, it is because you think you know everything about the QB situation and you won’t listen to anyone, and you don’t try to convince anyone that you are right, you simply demand that we listen to you because you are an all-knowing, future-predicting genius and we don’t know shit.

You know when Peter Griffin picked the mystery box instead of the boat? You are lobbying for the mystery box.

by rufio on Sep 15, 2008 10:59 PM EDT up reply actions

No.

This guy is just SURE Quinn is the next Joe Montana, and won’t let it go that DA is still starting. Because he knows FOR SURE because he has been at all the Browns practices and is an NFL scouting guru. Anytime Anderson doesn’t do well, Quinn would have done it perfectly. He thinks we should have made the switch MID GAME when we were down by 7 because DA threw a pick.

by rufio on Sep 15, 2008 10:56 PM EDT up reply actions

Right! Look at the end result.

Sure glad he made those half-time adjustments and lead us to another FG.

BTW, I have not made any predictions about Quinn. I make no pronouncing about how he will do. I am only commenting on Andersons PERFORMANCE to date but you and your brethen chose to ignore it. Right now, "anytime Anderson doesent to well " has extended 8 of 8 quarters this year.

by Juannieboy on Sep 16, 2008 3:00 PM EDT up reply actions

Based on last season

I thought DA deserved to start and PROVE that he could lead the Browns to wins this year. He isnt doing it and he can’t move the team with any consistantly or get points which I beleive is the object of giving him the football. Check out his stats for the first half and explain why he still DESERVED to be in the game. He had no more business in the game after that last piss-poor interception than Boeckman did for OSU against USC. Changing the QB is an in game adjustment that occasionally works if the coach has the balls to try it instead of watching 3 and outs until the game slips away.

Again, I have made no predictions about what Quinn will or will not do or how he will perform. So your depiction of what I think about BQ is made out of thin air.

I do think Quinn deserves a shot but only because DA has come up with a limp one.

by Juannieboy on Sep 16, 2008 3:38 PM EDT up reply actions

I am only replying to you because this is more of a rational argument and less of a knee jerk reaction

First, do not compare this to Boeckman/Pryor. It is way different. Even if you don’t buy the fast QB/pocket QB sharing time because it gives a D more to prepare for/different looks, you need to buy this: College is a different animal. Boeckman IS done after this season. In the NFL, you can keep QBs as long as they will play. In college, you get 4 years to play, and then you are gone. It is more natural for OSU to play two QBs (one 18-19 and one 23-24) rather than one. Plus, it was not only Boeckman being terrible that hurt the OSU O in that game. How many passes did Pryor attempt? How many times did he drop back looking to pass finding no one open and then HAVE to run?

Making the move to Quinn signifies a lot more than putting Pryor in for a series. If we go to Quinn, that means we have given up on DA, and we are shipping him off the very next day (just like Frye). It means we take any confidence we had in him away, and it is a very, very permanent thing, not an “adjustment”. What if we make the move to BQ and he looks equally bad, or worse? It is actually possible. And if that happens, we will be forced to make a deal right then and there and get rid of a QB, and risk locker room divisions. At only 0-2, losing to two very good teams, I don’t want that yet. I am ok if we do it later in the season or during a blowout, but we were in the game until the very last play.

That is as clear as I can make it for now. If you want to bring up other advantages to switching to Quinn, I am willing to listen. But calling for him simply because we aren’t winning a game is senseless.

by rufio on Sep 18, 2008 1:05 AM EDT up reply actions

I know it’s easy to crap on your team when we go 0-2, but I focus on the way they play and not the result. My conlusion is that this team makes too many mental errors, including lining up offsides. The Browns are not prepared to play week after week. This is the price of continuity, a head coach that knows defense and nothing else. He may be one of the top 3 defensive minds in pro football, but that won’t get it done.

by elsandito on Sep 15, 2008 11:50 AM EDT reply actions

You would think if he knew defense so well, the D would be a little more disciplined and actually line up on sides.

I really think at this point he needs to remember his military upbringing and bring the discipline back to practice. It sounds like the players love him because he rewards them with breaks, time off, etc when they do well. I am all for that, but when you don’t bring the discipline on Sunday, sometimes you need to beat a team back in to shape. I’m not 100% sold on RAC, but I’m not ready to give up on him either. He needs to bring it, though.

I agree, I have harped on this for years. The Browns for whatever reason make the most idiotic pentalties at the most crucial times and also blow coverage routinely. This is on the head coach, and we are stuck with him. The worst thing to happen was this team winning 10 games last year, Phil slaps an extenstion on Romeo’s lap and here we are.
This is going to be a long year fellas, Buffalo, Tenn., Jacksonville, Colts, Eagles, Redskins, Giants, Broncos and Steelers on the Road. This is about to get ugly real quick. And if you think the Browns are better then these mentioned teams, you are drinking the Kool-aid

That was not pretty, but this game showed us some good things. How about we keep a pretty good offense to ten points. I know the weather had something to do with this, but the defense was strong.

This is two games that Shawn Rogers has drilled the opposing QB. He is a dominating force in that line. I saw at least four times he kocked Roethlisberger to the ground. If he keeps this going, he can book his room in Hawaii.

Jerome Harrision needs the ball more. He is a playmker pure and simple. If he didn’t step out of bounds on that screen he had a chance to take it to the house.

Kellen Winslow on Polamalu is a mis-match. Winslow on anyone is a mis-match. The fact that we seem to forget about him sometimes is frustrating.

Our defense is powerful. Our run defense is strong. I know Parker got 100, but it was a struggle to get there. Our defense made them earn every yard. If we hold every offense to 10 points, we will win ALOT of games.

Our O-line is awesome at pass protection. Run blocking needs a little work. Can someone please explain why we kept running away from the unbalanced line? I thought the point was to overload a defense with good run blockers and run behind them, not awayy from them.

On to the bad.

We cannot go away from Braylon. I know he has had some bad drops, but we need to get him back on track. If we go away from him it could damage his pysche. I know that sounds weird, but he is too good to go away from. I don’t want him to develop the yips.

I have always been a Romeo fan. Last night he cost us at least a chance at a game. The situation at the end of half was horrible. Wasting 13 seconds before calling a timeout? How is that even possible? Not to mention wasting our timeouts with 3 minutes to go. Not good Romeo, not good.

Derek Anderson is lloking to check down to much. I think he has had to many people telling him to be protective with the ball. His game is chunking it deep to our playmakers. Being aggresive. He needs the “eye of the tiger” back.

If Robaire Smith is out for awhile, we need someone young to step it up. Shaun Smith is a borderline dirty player that other teams hate. I love him.

I have been screaming this at my TV for two weeks. Yes, even when the games weren’t on. Once a gunslinger, always a gunslinger. Our O needs to look to attack.

“We cannot go away from Braylon.”

I agree with this to some degree, but we are looking at him too much right now. K2 needs more looks. Someone opposite Braylon who resembles an NFL WR needs to get some looks. Stallworth, JJ, Rucker, Joe Horn, anyone. Steptoe is so out of place in this offense it is ridiculous.

by rufio on Sep 15, 2008 11:06 PM EDT up reply actions

I would settle for DA going to Braylon after he’s looked at another receiver. Seriously, DA gets locked in on his primary receiver way, way too often, especially when the game gets tight. That’s what burned him on the interception at the end of the first half.

by woodsmeister on Sep 16, 2008 2:54 PM EDT up reply actions

IF DA is the qb of the future, we might just have to make peace with that. I just feel like when he tries NOT to lock in to his target, he just ends up locking in to his outlet, and that’s worse.

The risk/reward proportion is terrible right now because it is as high risk as it has ever been, but the reward is a 3 yard slant instead of a 50% TD. Attacking is what made our O so dangerous last year.

But honestly, would you look off Braylon for Steptoe? I would find it pretty hard. I think we don’t look like the same O because:
1. We aren’t as aggressive (either playcalling OR DA’s mentality, because I am not going to pretend I know who the primary target is on every play and what route he is running)
2. Braylon is playing terrible
3. We don’t have JJ or a good 2nd WR.
4. We aren’t targeting K2 enough.

Disagree?

by rufio on Sep 18, 2008 1:11 AM EDT up reply actions

1. Agree. Bring in Harrison and throw some more screen passes. Go deep. Be more aggressive.

2. Agree.

3. Agree. Is Stallworth ever going to play for this team? Hell, even Travis Wilson might look better out there than Steptoe. Give Cribbs some offensive reps. Cribbs’ and Stallworth’s injuries are killing this team, and that’s before we even get to DA’s and Edwards’ injuries, which clearly took them off the same page to start this season. I don’t understand why Chud hasn’t used Cribbs more on offense, especially since he was a pretty effective college QB? Slash, anyone?

4. Agree – Why can’t DA look at DA and throw to K2? Or vice versa?

Braylon not to Blame

All things considered, especially the weather, I do not think it is fair to place all the blame on Braylon for the loss to the Steelers. If I had to point to one thing that set the tone for a loss I would blame the debacle of a two minute drill at the end of the first half. Which has to be blamed on the coaching staff for not being prepared and not managing he clock. Yea Braylon screwed up a couple of times but one neither pass was that easy and you can’t blame loss on those two incompletions. The interception at the end of the first half was much more of a game breaker.

by mas1369 on Sep 15, 2008 2:50 PM EDT reply actions

1. Braylon doesn’t lack talent, he sometimes lacks drive, determination, and focus. You can’t deny that when he is zoned-in he is an incredible WR. Take the one-handed catch in the preseason. Or the layout against Cincy. That’s talent. It just isn’t consistent enough.

2. I can’t wait for JJ either. If he ever makes it.

3. Our general lack of offensive explosiveness and fortitude during BOTH of the games so far is upsetting. That was our identity last year, and it won us 10 games. We were supposed to build on that and add a D that could sometimes stop people. Where are we now?

by rufio on Sep 15, 2008 11:09 PM EDT reply actions

Where to start

One: This team has not been prepared to start the season, sure they have played two playoff teams, but guess what: The Browns think they are, at least they run there mouth like one.
Two: Penalties, bad snaps, not making the big play ( kickoff that rolled to the 2 yard line and the Browns failed to get the ball)
Three: pass rush, besides Rogers who busts his ass to get to the QB? Steelers on there own two, on a second and 9, Ben sits in the pocket forever, complete for 30yards, inexcusable.
Four: ROMEO, clock management is Herm Edwards like, and Romeo go for it on 4th down for a change, guess what you are 0-6 against the Steelers take a freaking chance!! Jamal was what last night 18 rushes for 34 yards, mix it up, get Harrison some touches
Five: And this has haunted the Browns for at least my 43 years as a fan. Can we get a stop when we need it!!!!!. 3:42 left in the game, and the Steelers jam the ball down our throats, and we get the ball back with 30 seconds and no timeouts.
And one last one, Ben played with a separated shoulder and we can not still beat the Steelers. Sad.

Rational Steeler fans point of view

I was surprised by the fact that the Browns showed a little grit this time around. They really held their own in the trenches. Rogers is simply an animal.

One point ide like to make that im sure wont be popular with you Browns fans is that Derick Anderson is killing you guys. I know Braylon Edwards hasnt helped him much so far but from what i see Anderson just doesnt look that confident in throwing it down field. Lets face it, Anderson has all day to throw with the second best pass pro in the league behind the Pats, a heap of playmakers, and a decent running game. Theres no reason he should be playing this bad, and im basing most of this on how he played down the stretch last year too. Just my opinion but Brady Quinn gives you guys the best chance to win.

One more thing. Why didnt they go to Winslow alot more? I thought Polamalu was playing him pretty tough but 5`10 against 6`4?

by SteelerDomination on Sep 16, 2008 12:58 AM EDT reply actions

“Why didnt they go to Winslow alot more?”

We were wondering that ALL GAME. Granted it is hard to put the ball where Polamalu doesn’t have a chance to get it, but if DA did, Winslow would have made some awesome catches to help him out. After he caught that pop up what ricocheted off of someone and went high in the air, I thought we would go to him on every single play. We barely looked his way.

I don’t know how many people on this site are true DA fans, I think a lot of people are “whoever gives us the best chance to win” guys. So far, we don’t know what Brady would really do if given significant time. He led one regular season drive last year, and he looked good, but our whole O looked good all year. I think most people would be for Quinn if he could prove he would post more Ws than DA. We really need to blow out the Ravens or something and put him in to get a look at him.

Yeah, totally. I mean we should have won at least 6 Super Bowls, I mean, we’ve been around since the late nineties. Geesh.

Your “expansion” card ran out about 5 years ago bud. Now y’all just suck.

My apologies for failing to adhere to your schedule for improvement. We should have consulted with you on all decisions. Cleveland was hamstrung with the least favorable expansion draft rule in the history of the league. Nobody decent wanted to coach such a sorry band. Pardon us for wanting pro football in our town. I can understand why you, rooting for a team thousands of miles from us, couldn’t empathize with our situation. Your narrow perspective bodes well in all your future endeavours.

I am not playing the expansion card, but I would hardly say we suck. We held you to 10 points and you looked pretty bad on offense, especially compared to the Cowboys, who dominated our D and easily scored 28.

How is that michigan winning streak against OSU going? How about Utah?
