Here is the quote;

Make the switch now, Romeo. Once you introduce the possibility of a starting quarterback change, it almost always becomes something of a self-fulfilling prophecy any way. Putting Derek Anderson on notice for being yanked in favor of Brady Quinn isn't really that far from the actual benching, even though it probably feels like just the last step of necessary patience to the Browns' head coach.

Interesting point. There definitely is a sense in which putting a QB on notice is a de facto benching.

My biggest question about the way that Romeo handled this question in his press conference is, How does DA react to this vote of no-confidence? Given that he already seems to be a pretty streaky player, does this rattle him? Or does this re-create a little of the adversity that he faced last year going into his first start v. Cincy and give him motivation?

While we’re asking questions, does anyone think there’s really a chance that Romeo will make the switch to Quinn this week based on what he sees in practice, as he seemed to imply in his press conference last week? If he does, do we see that as the actions of a desperate coach?

Think about it this way; if the Browns continue on this pace, they’ll be lucky to win 6 games. Right now, footballoutsiders.com has them projected for 3.7 and, looking at their schedule, it doesn’t seem crazy. Now Phil Savage would be in no position to dictate to Lerner what kind of coach he wants as a replacement for Romeo, much less maintain the level of control over personnel he has now with a 4-12 or 5-11 type season. Maybe Phil’s a little quicker to fire Romeo in the hopes of turning the season around and maintaining his front office hegemony?

Obviously a lot of thoughts in there, sorry if it’s obtuse.

Lerner seems to be a very very hands-off guy. If he didn’t fire Savage, he would let him make or at least have a very large impact on the decision of who the presumptive new HC would be. Learner knows Savage knows football.

Switching to Quinn to start is not (necessarily) desperate, but it is an admission that DA is done.
