Crennel: "Derek Anderson Will Start"
Over at the OBR Blogs, reporter Fred Greetham just confirmed (via Romeo Crennel) that Browns QB Derek Anderson will get the start this Sunday against the Cincinnati Bengals.
Romeo Crennel announced that Derek Anderson will start against the Bengals, but Brady Quinn ‘will be ready’.
Crennel said he wouldn’t say any more about the situation, but sounded as though Anderson was on a short leash.
If Anderson doesn't light up the Bengals' secondary like he did the first time around last season, he may be out the door.

Nice Chris. I just updated my FanShot. Sorry for misleading everyone. If you listen to the interview, it really did seem definitive. My bad.

No need to apologize; still contributes to how close we were to naming Quinn the starter (further confirming a quick hook this week).

It also certainly makes you wonder if folks in the front office are displeased with Crennel’s choice.

Very decisive Romeo but, as usual,......... wrong decision.
OK what are the chances DA will light it up again this year like he did last year against the Bengals? He has shown no touch or pocket presence in three games. He can’t hit a receiver instride if his life depended on it. He should sit and watch and try to figure out how to win back the job he lost.
Cincy is going to blitz him from the get go and do you really think Anderson will rise to the occasion? I say no. He wont throw a screen pass unless its planned. He has not shown the ablility to check down, locking onto his primary and trying to force it in.
Give Quinn the work now. He’ll need it and it would be better to give him his first start now instead of against the G-men. Unless, Romeo is just packing it in waiting for a miricule to keep from being dumped before the bye week, this is the wrong move.

This may be Romeo’s test to pass or fail. I think the only way Romeo saves his job is by deciding to start Quinn and that this decision somehow turns our season around. Romeo’s refusal to try Quinn now is a way of giving Romeo enough rope to hang himself. Rest assured, the quality of this decision by Romeo will be no different than his other decisions.

Hey, one thing that hasn't seemed to be mentioned here (I may be wrong)
is that Derek Anderson’s first pick against Baltimore wasn’t his fault. He sent it right into the hands of Kellen Winslow, who should know enough to either haul in the ball or at least not let it fly into the air. A TE has to be able to make tough catches over the middle, and that should have been a 3rd down conversion.
Credit should go to Ray Lewis for laying an absolutely vicious hit on Winslow, causing him to let the pass fly into the arms of Chris McCallister. And the play was as much a good play by Ray Lewis as a bad play by Kellen Winslow, but Derek Anderson was not at fault for this pass. Someone needs to make a play on third down.
As for the second two picks however, I’ve got nothing. Nevertheless, it’s wrong to say that Derek Anderson “blew the lead”

As Browns fans, if we are going to back a QB change after 3 games, we need to be allowed to be irrational and place almost all of the blame on the incumbent

Why is it only over 3 games? Why not the last 9 games + pro bowl. St. Louis is changing QBs and they have more points and yards then we do. There option is not for the future but for the present. Other teams have made the change too.
If you don’t play Quinn now and give him a chance, why not trade him. I know there is a 1-100 chance that we could make the playoffs but that will be wiped out with a loss this week.
Will you be happy if DA plays the whole game poorly? I’m not saying he should be bench forever… to change QBs can create a spark… seems to me something we need.

Wow – it is indictment enough of this offense that St. Louis has more points and yards than we do.

Are you joking? It’s hard to tell believe you could be serious. It was a 3-4 yard route, he stared him down the whole way, waited after he was open and rocketed the ball ball to him. He set Winslow up to get tee’d off on by Ray Lewis and you blame Winslow?
But what was your point? That his 22.4 passer rating should have been 25.6?

i was in a sports bar
so I wouldn’t be able to see closely enough whether he “stared him down the whole way.”
I’m not joking though, receivers who drop passes upwards are not doing their QB any favors. And TEs need to be able to take hits over the middle.
I’m only saying this because I saw further down the headline “Derek Anderson Blows Lead.” It was a 3 point lead. The Ravens offense was moving the ball (albeit not very efficiently. It was third down. This wasn’t like DA let the Ravens back into the game. The Ravens were well in the game. And the Pass was an accurate pass to an open receiver over the middle (and a very good one).
That being said, I don’t think DA is a great QB (let alone that he had a good game on Sunday). He needs masterful protection to be effective, and while he got that last year, it doesn’t seem to be happening this year, and the results are not working out well for the Browns.

I should have stuck with the sports bar instead of getting DirectTV….
Comment probably should have been “Derek Anderson Blows” Seriously him and him alone lost the Ravens game. The other two games weren’t even as critical to the season.
Anyway go Browns!

Kellen Winslow took a HUGE hit. He is without a doubt the toughest player on our team. He makes more tough catches than anyone else on our team. I’m not going to crap on him for one dropped pass.

Absolutely valid.
My inclination was really more to credit Ray Lewis with an excellent play defensively. Of course, I am a Ravens fan. Every player is going to make those kinds of drops sometimes, and Kellen Winslow is a very good player who makes those drops rarely. My argument was really more about DA not deserving the blame for that pick than with Winslow deserving it. Sometimes, the other team just makes a great play.

Here are your choices:
1. Throw to K2 who will absolutely get hit by a substantially slower than in his 20s but still really strong and smart Ray Lewis, with Chris McAllister somewhere close
2. Throw to the person a hurt Ed Reed is covering
3. Throw to the people Samari Rolle and/or Dawan Landry are covering.
4. Dump the ball off.
5. Take a sack.
I think choices 2-5 are better than choice 1. Maybe the fact that it ended up an INT is not his fault, but it still was not a good decision. I did not see the play, but that just doesn’t sound like it should have been his best option regardless of whatever else was going on.
Bad DA had the corresponding Good DA alternate snaps with him last year, and so we got an equal amount of this vs. thread-the-needle, perfectly on target passes that led to HUGE gains down the field. This year I think we lost Good DA on the stock market when it crashed.

And after being reminded by my own comment, Rolle and Landry were both not even playing at the time. Why not try to attack their backups right away?

The only thing DA is gonna light up is the 0-4 record we’ll have after Cincy! I’m willing to bet we get the first pick in the 2009 draft.

Footballoutsiders.com actually has us less than a percentage point ahead of Detroit for the first overall pick right now. For the full, sobering (as if we needed sobering) breakdown, click here.
For what it’s worth, I don’t think that’s where we’re headed, especially once we start Quinn. However, Footballoutsiders has a great track record of preseason predictions and they pegged us for 6 wins at the start of the season.

The Browns probably won’t even reach top 5.
They’d have to get past the Rams, Chiefs, Lions, Raiders, Bengals, Dolphins and Texans. That’s just not going to happen.

Switching QB's
Sometimes switching QB’s really can spark an offense, and in this case I think the Browns should try it. It’s not like it’s going to make their record that much worse. Besides, if Brady Quinn doesn’t get it done then their lack of success is probably more due to the offensive injuries than Derek Anderson’s play.

I really don’t see why he doesn’t play Steptoe’s WR position. He would be faster, more of a playmaker, and have at least practiced blocking once in his life. Plus there is always the threat of switching formations and lining him up in the backfield. Getting him and Rucker on the field with Kellen, Braylon, and anyone else could allow us to go from legitimate I form 2WR to 4 wide spread offenses in the no-huddle, or even on the same play. Jesus Christ what are we waiting for.
