Ask a Steeler Fan

Hows it going Browns fans. My names Steeler_, no surprises I'm from over on the BTSC blog. I know we are not your favourite guys but I come here completely respectful and not out to bash anyone, more so, just converse with you about our upcoming game in a friendly way and answer any questions you may have about the game this Sunday.

Cheers

Star-divide

Divisional games are always great, no matter how the two teams stack up.

This weekend we highlight the great Browns vs Steelers rivalry, which admittedly has simmered the last few years but one that the fans still enjoy nonetheless.

Last Week:

In difficult conditions, the Browns defense and special teams did just enough to preserve a 6 - 3 win over the Buffalo Bills, windy conditions made the passing game havoc for Derek Anderson, but he will have a chance at redemption this week against a Steelers defense that has lost a little lustre from last season.

The Steelers on the other hand, visited Detroit, and came away victors with a 28 - 20 decision, after playing well for the early parts of the game, the Steelers lay down a little and let the Lions back in with a shot at a win, but when push came to shove, the Steeler D held off the Lions impressive game.

Discussion:

I love me a little debate, as long as each side keeps it respectful and mature. Feel free to post any queries/concerns or opinions on this weekends upcoming game either Browns/Steelers/AFC North related whether it be about expected gameplans, injuries etc and I'll be sure to respond with my own insight from the Steelers camp.

Cheers guys!

What’s Polamalu’s status?

by rufio on Oct 14, 2009 9:16 PM EDT reply actions

It seems Polamlu is going to be a go on Sunday against you guys. He practiced today with the team for the first time and the general consensus is that he will play.

However, still a slim chance that he could sit the game, however with Aaron Smith having been placed on IR expect to see Polamalu back in his usual SS spot to provide a morale boost to our defense and team

Hmmm, I’d love to hear a Steelers fan point of view on our beloved Baltimore friends post …..

by talonk on Oct 14, 2009 9:24 PM EDT reply actions

Hmm, bit before my time really, i was only young at the time of all the expansion drama and what not.

Although Baltimore getting passed over for a long time without a team, I certainly think Cleveland were the bigger losers of the more recent franchise shakeup as they had to build an expansion team rather than inherit another cities already functioning organisation, and like someone said in that post, you guys essentially had to watch your team win a Superbowl for a different city under a new name

A lot of the older Steeler folk refer to the Ravens as the Purple Browns, because that was essentially the team that we used to have a great rivalry with, and it was moved, not this version of the Browns.

To summarise I see it as this. Colts packed up from Baltimore and moved the TEAM to Indianapolis. Baltimore was repaid the favor when the Clevelands TEAM moved there. Cleveland I see as the losers in this as the essentially built a team from scratch, whereas Baltimore and Indianapolis were given teams

The only solution is to give us the Colts franchise and re-name them the Browns with our uniforms. Indy can have our roster.

If it were 1995, I’d respond with, hell why don’t we just keep our Browns and just give Baltimore their Colts back. But I’d refuse to take the hypocritical approach and call it justice when fans are stripped of their team, just because it happened to us in the past. Today, or at any point in the future, I’d absolutely refuse to cheer for any franchise if the Browns folded, and they moved here.
(Obviously, the last part is purly hypothetical because the Browns will never fold in Cleveland, one the best markets for a football franchise their is. The level loyalty in the fans here is next to unmatched.)

I posted my thoughts on it

I grew up in Ohio (born in Michigan) I lived in Ohio from the age of 6 through College (in Canton Ohio) I cheer for UofM and the Steelers. So yeah, I’ve seen the ugly side of Ohio Fans.

I’ve also seen a ton of passion from them, whether drunken urination on enemy property or fistfights with each other over who should start at QB. I would never argue that they are the smartest fan base, or even the most loyal. But I dare anyone to show more passion for their teams than Browns and Buckeye fans.

Football is Ohio. It just is.

I tried to explain to a Cubs fan when I was living in Chicago the variety of fan the Browns had.

I told him imagine the Cubs fanbase (Insanely loyal, largely not caring about the game outside of the Cubs and almost always drunk) and then make them passionate, bitter and angry.

That’s the Browns fans now. I think it will take a Super Bowl win for the bitter side to drop away even a bit. Angry? I can’t imagine a Browns fan not angry.

by Phantaskippy on Oct 15, 2009 2:24 PM EDT up reply actions

I can’t think of two less similar fan bases than Cubs and Browns (if you exclude indifferent fans). Browns fans are very knowledgeable and deeply care about the game they are watching.

I’m hoping for just this one more week, Parker gets most of the carries; let Mendenhall run roughshod over some other team’s defense.

Parker was expected to return to the practice field which I am pretty sure he did today. I expect Tomlin to put him in the mix against you guys.

I expect Parker to get a few carries early, just so Tomlin can see his game – fitness status.

However, expect Mendenhall to be the workhorse as he has been doing. He will likely run a lot up the gut in an attempt to tire out your front seven. Then we will likely see Parker have some runs to the outside to utilise his speed and take advantage of a little fatigue.

Never run at Shaun Rogers. Never.

by Bernie19Kosar on Oct 15, 2009 12:42 AM EDT up reply actions

We shall see how it works. For that to succeed we will need to add a lead back or Tight End to the run formation, double Shaun Rogers with a C and G, and attempt to shift him the opposite way from where we want to run, with the TE or FB making the final block.

It can be done, but it isnt easy and requires very good execution.

I look forward to that matchup.

I have Rashard Mendenhall in both fantasy leagues I play in. First, do the Steelers really plan on splitting carries when Willie returns full speed? Second, as a fan, wouldn’t you prefer Mendenhall to get the majority of the carries? The running game looks a lot better with him back there.

by Roger Dorn on Oct 14, 2009 9:24 PM EDT reply actions

I have Rashard in one of my leagues too : )

They will split carries, but i would be shocked to see Mendy get less than 2/3rds of the carries. He responded well to being “benched”, and has since been a relentless force running the ball. He punished San Diego, and was punishing the Lions until we decided to pass pass pass.

Not many fans are high on Parker, especially after Mendenhalls emergence, but the reality is Parker has not been healthy for a long time, he is like glass, injures very easily. He is damn good when healthy (see SD, HOU last year), however I think Mendy has stepped up and has shown he is more than capable.

You cant argue with the numbers hes put up in 2 starts.

Is Mike Wallace as good as Nate Washington, only with hands?

by rolub on Oct 14, 2009 9:25 PM EDT reply actions

Mike Wallace has been an absolute gem. He was called unpolished as a receiver, but he has shown he can make the majority of catches. He had one crucial drop last week, but made up for it with that long bomb from Ben that he caught.

He has great hands, better straight line speed than Washington had, and seems like a much more imposing threat than Nate was.

He has more than sealed the 3rd WR job in our offense with his consistancy, and he has our entire fanbase very excited about his future. If he keeps his work ethic over the years, he could be a real star.

Shaun Rodgers will flatten Ben. Will the Steeler line be able to stop this beast?

by raven on Oct 14, 2009 10:26 PM EDT reply actions

Lol hello Raven. You like to appear all over the place huh?

So far our OL has done a surprisingly good job in both run and pass defense. Most of the sacks that Ben has taken has been Bens fault for holding onto the ball too long to make the big play, which is Ben being Ben.

Shaun Rodgers however is obviously our toughest opponent that the OL will have faced to this stage of the season, I think they are ready for the challenge. Chris Kemoeatu has been a monster this season, and I have a lot of faith in him and Hartwig being able to contain Shaun Rogers.

Shaun Rogers is big and relentless, so if Ben holds onto that ball too long, he can expect to be dragged down by Big Baby or Kamerion Wimbley coming off the edge

by Phantaskippy on Oct 15, 2009 2:27 PM EDT up reply actions

Nah, we can give up a home run to Cribbs, and some other good returns and if we play well win the game. If Rogers is playing great, you can’t run up the middle and your QB could die at any time.

by Phantaskippy on Oct 15, 2009 5:08 PM EDT up reply actions

Cribbs can score on a kickoff or punt or set up great field position. Also, he is the best threat to make a big play in the run game- on a reverse or wild cat. Also, he is the best on a team full of great punt and kick coverage guys. He almost beat you by himself in 07.

by Ryan Kelsey on Oct 15, 2009 6:41 PM EDT up reply actions

My point is Rogers should be the only thing we are scared of. The Browns are rebuilding, and while improved aren’t in the same league talent wise as the Steelers. But even great teams should be afraid of Rogers, he’s that good.

If we were blowing you out, we wouldn’t be scared of Cribbs, but we would still be scared of Rogers.

Cribbs is dangerous, but not as dangerous to your QB’s health. Didn’t mean to diss Cribbs, that’s just what I was aiming for in the original.

by L Train on Oct 15, 2009 1:37 AM EDT up reply actions

Nope. It is something that the Steeler fanbase is quietly very worried about. Before the season started we had a post which was list your top 10 most valuable Steelers, and Aaron Smith found himself in the Top 3-5 in almost everyones list, including mine.

2007 you saw the run defense collapse without him on the line. Although I think we are better equipped to deal with that now, its something we are all holding our breath about.

Kirschke did a nice job in relief of Brett Keisel last year, so he is the man stepping up, with Eason and 1st rounder Hood rotating in and out.

Aaron Smith does not get much credit from those outside the Steeler fanbase, so i appreciate you bringing that up.

Bleeding Black and Gold.....forever

by Michael Hewitt on Oct 15, 2009 1:55 AM EDT up reply actions

It'll be huge.

If Troy isn’t 100% or can’t play just run at his backup, Lewis does well against us and your offensive line isn’t crap.

Control the clock like Detroit did and you will have a dang good chance to beat us.

Ben needs time to get into a rhythm, and we have no depth, No depth at D-line. Keisel is solid, Kirschke is as good a backup there is, but behind them are two rookies, one who is great against the pass, but isn’t handling O-Line Run blocking technique well and the other just rejoined our team after learning a different defense.

Attack and wear down the Steelers line and you’ll be in the game with a chance to win it.

Only Mangini could screw up that game plan.

by Roger Dorn on Oct 15, 2009 2:56 PM EDT up reply actions

Game planning was non-existent in the last regime. I think coach Mangini is a huge upgrade to the Browns organization in this category.

Brownsyup

by Brownsyup on Oct 15, 2009 3:39 PM EDT up reply actions

I think Mangini has a tendency to out think himself at times. His Jets did beat us in 2007, but other than 7 sacks they got outplayed. That wasn’t a great time for the Steelers, it was the start of a 3-5 finish to the season.

Maybe I’m wrong about Mangini, we’ll see. If he can exploit the D-line and control the clock I’ll give him credit. It isn’t a rocket science game plan, which is why I have a feeling Mangini won’t do it. If you let Ben get in a rhythm, you won’t have a prayer.

I must say, I hate it, but you guys always reload well.

by L Train on Oct 15, 2009 2:08 AM EDT reply actions

Well, we’ve never tried reloading an entire roster at one time either. The Browns keep changing schemes too much, you get guys and before they are ready their job has changed. then you go for home-runs while the role players aren’t there. It’s a tough mess to get out of, and your going to need to find the right people and give them 5-6 years to build a team.

In today’s NFL, I just don’t see that happening anytime soon.

by Phantaskippy on Oct 15, 2009 2:35 PM EDT up reply actions

Actually building up the role players and depth is exactly what Mangini and Kokinis have focused on thus far in their regime. The angry fans are mad at getting rid of our “superstars”

Bradshaw redux?

Can you describe your emotions if Rodgers grabs Big Ben and throws him on his head like Joe “Turkey” Jones did the beloved Terry Bradshaw so long ago? That’s when the Browns /Steelers rivialry really heated up in my opinion. Mean Joe Green stomping on Bob McKay while he was on the ground was another great moment.

If you don’t like seeing Rogers in uniform again sure.

Really a slam like that and Goodell would end his season. This year the way QB’s are being protected, it would be bad. I don’t think players hate each other like they did then. You don’t want to hurt anyone because you know you are one injury away from your income going “poof.”

As for my Emotions? Put yourself in those shoes, let’s say you have Elway as a QB and just won a Super Bowl and somebody tries to kill him. I can’t imagine the Browns fans taking it well.

As for Elway, no I am not saying Ben and John Elway are equals, just saying that we love Ben that much.

this is not a rivalry game on the field anymore. It’s boring seeing the Browns simply roll over and not take exception to the ass-whooping the Steelers inflict on them. Same was true in the 50’ and 60’s when the Steelers sucked worse than the Browns do now. We need some HATE here to make it interesting.

PS. Bringing Mr. Ed’s twin, Elway into your analogy is a poor choice even if I understand what you mean.

We want the Browns to be good again, not so we can lose to them, but so it feels great when we do win.

Like last year, sweeping the Ravens was a great feeling, just crushing their season over and over, I want to feel that with the Browns again.

I can still feel Metcalf’s returns, just bam, season over. It hurts so bad on one side, and feels so good on the other, I’d also like to see the Browns crush the Ravens, those birds are so arrogant, only the Steelers should be that cocky.

Hopefully Mangini is the answer, I tend to lump him with the huge embarrassing failure that is Charlie Weiss, but maybe he’s different.

Browns victory

Hey Steeler,

Good to have you here. The question I have relates not to the teams, match-ups, personnel or any of that stuff. What it relates to is my prediction on this game.

You see I’m going to go out on a limb here and predict a Browns victory and a 4+ sack performance from the D.

Now of course you’ll say, damn, TTT is crazy. And you’d be right. Crazy like a fox. Especially considering all the expected point differentials I’ve seen and the fact that I watched the first Steelers drive against the Chargers and didn’t think Big Ben could be any smoother.

But hear me out. I feel a Brown’s victory in my bones. At the risk of getting absolutely laughed out of town, I’m gonna say it now.

So have I lost all grasp of logic, an eternal optimist or gifted prophet?

I spelled out how the Browns win this game on BTSC.

The Lions showed how to do it, even if they couldn’t finish the job; control the clock. With A. Smith out run at his replacement, all day. Jamal Lewis does well against us, if he is going good and your getting yards and long drives you’ll wear down our front, as we have 2 rookies and Nick Eason for depth. Hood is great against the pass, not so against the run right now.

The Lions controlled the clock in the second half last week and the Steelers offense, and Big Ben especially couldn’t get a rhythm. Ben is an up and down guy, he’s not consistent, at his best I think he beats anybody, when he isn’t at his best we are beatable. Keep him and the O-line out of a rhythm and Ben will make mistakes and you’ll have a solid chance.

Your run defense better show up, or hope Mendy’s out and Parker still is rusty. If we get the run going it’s all over, Ben and the Defense feed off that.

It’s hard to imagine a scenario in which the Browns can control the clock. The only one I can envision is if Anderson has one of his too-infrequent hot days and completes a high percentage of his passes to keep the offense on the field. The Browns have run better for the last two games, but it’s hard to think that they will run the ball successfully all day. It’s going to require an Good Derek performance, assisted by at least 2 receivers stepping up big and eliminating the drops. So: almost everything would have to go right for the Browns, and that’s exceedingly unlikely. However, I do expect a close game, at least for a half. This is a much better Browns defense, and I don’t expect them to roll over. I’m hoping for a low-scoring, close game. At this point, I would be pretty happy to see the Browns have a chance to win in the 4th quarter, even if they don’t actually do it. It’s all about building, not leaping tall ones.

A. Smith is key to our run defense. He’s a huge loss. With Kirshcke (spelling) in there will be a drop off. If the Browns can exploit that and make some key passes to extend drives the defensive line depth is terrible for us. Eason and Hood can be run on. Neither requires the manpower Smith does. My argument is that if you can start getting long drives your running game will just get better and better as the game goes on.

Detroit controlled the clock against us. The Browns may not be very good, but they should be better than Detroit, and we had Aaron Smith against Detroit.

Having faith in your team is never a bad thing

If you dont think your team can pull out a victory against any team no matter the circumstance you arent much of a fan

Anyways, although a Browns victory seems unlikely, the 4 sack performance you predict is quite feasible. You will need a big game from Kamerion Wimbley however, as most our OL protection will be concerned with Shaun Rogers.

For a Browns victory to occur, youre going to have to find a way to slow down Big Ben. Ive never seen him play better

On that note, how is Shaun Rogers doing? Cant say ive watched musch of you guys. Is his motivational level high? Is he playing high level ball still?

Good luck this Sunday, well not really, but you know, sportsmanship haha

Rogers got a blocked kick and a blocked XP against Cinci in one game, the man is unstoppable unless he has the whole OL 5 manning him, hell I’ve seen him pull in a sack while in the middle of being triple teamed.
