The Browns Fan

I am brand new to this site, and this is my first Blog, but I felt compelled to write how i feel about the Cleveland Browns.  I have been a Browns fan my whole life.  My mother moved from Illinois to Ohio when she was just out of high school.  She was a Packer fan but she wanted to be a local fan and took the Browns under her wing.  I was born in 1980 and being a Browns fan was not that bad growing up.  They were winning the Central Division, making the playoffs and things were alright.  I even laughed during the 2007 Draft when they showed a picture of Brady Quinn in the Bernie Jersey.  I had almost the same exact picture growing up.

I am a fan through and through, I will never give up cheering for the Browns, but I can’t stand what the front office is doing the team.  When the Browns hired Mangini all I heard was how he was going to get the Browns back to History.  When I think about the Browns history, I think or Paul Brown and Otto Graham winning 7 championships in 10 years (and the 3 they didn’t win they were still in the championship game).  I think about Jim Brown beating the Baltimore Colts, Bernie leading the team to 3 AFC Championship games.  So when Mangini says he wants to return the team to glory, I am all for that.  My problem is that the moves he is making is not helping the team.

I understand that he is rebuilding and it takes time.  Next year will be better… I guess.  But to me there has to be someone that you rebuild a team around.  He has shipped away the decent players to other teams (Jets) and benched Brady Quinn.  To me, if you say you are rebuilding the team and you choose a Quarterback, that is who you are going to build the team around.  Give the kid a chance to grow with the team.

It is hard to be a Browns fan today, but I just have to stick it out.  I will utter the words that have become synonymous with Cleveland sports, “Well, there is always next year!”

Can’t say I disagree with much here.

Keep in mind we really need to see another draft and season to gauge where we’re at with Mangini. He’s got alot of options open to him with next years draft, and IMO next season is critical to Mangini keeping his job. Technically you would want to give a new coach around 4 years, but the results of this season really are making next year a make or break for this staff. Another poor draft and poor season and Cleveland fans will be showing up at Lerner’s house with torches. I’d hate to see Mangini come in here, blow up the team and get rid off any talent we have, and then get fired or resign. THEN where are we?

Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on your personal beliefs), we’re probably stuck with this guy for a while. It is what it is and basically, you can’t have a guy tear down a house and fire him before he has a chance to attempt to rebuild it.

No matter how many games they win, the Ravens will always be that town's second, lamer girlfriend. They used to have Art Donovan, and Johnny U, and Jim Parker. Now, they get Ray Ray. They'll always pine for their first love, until the generation that grew up on the Colts finally dies off, and all that remains are camo-clad, retarded Maryland rednecks you see outside M&T Bank Stadium today. Ravens fans today consist solely of dudes who sold you your Christmas tree.

I see a lot to disagree with, personally. You can not be happy with the return we got for Edwards and Winslow, but it is pretty clear in my mind that trading both was the correct move. Both players were nearing free agency and did not seem to have their heart set on extending with the Browns. In these scenarios, you move the player and get something in return.

Another poor draft

when was the first poor draft?

this is actually one of the better “i’ve been a fan for a long time and don’t like the teams direction” posts. I agree with a lot, but i disagree with one paragraph. In the NFL you don’t build a team around one player. you just can’t. Yes, the QB is the most important position, but Peyton Manning would look bad on this team. In the NFL you build around role players. You collect role players and then add in a few playmakers when you get the chance. The big time players are the icing, not the cake.

I think it is very pre-mature to declare that coach Mangini is a failure and that he is taking the team in the wrong direction. I know this is a frustrating season and it was bound to be given the schedule and the state the team was in at the end of last year. Though I do not think coach Mangini has been mistake-free in what he has done, I think he is building from the “ground up” rather than around a certain player. Seeing what he has done in the draft so far… Mack looks like a winner. MoMass shows promise. Robi… the jury is out. His later picks… we still don’t know but we’ll be seeing a lot of them with the recent injuries.
So I think we need to give the guy a chance. There is a lot to like along with the stuff that makes you scratch your head. I don’t think I’ve seen a delay-of-game this year from indecision—a hallmark of the Crennel era. Penalties overall are way, way down. This probably won the game for us in Buffalo. I see game planning where there was none.
Now we are going into the next draft with a wealth of picks. This looks to be a VERY deep draft. If coach Mangini and the rest of the staff can be skillful, get lucky or whatever the heck it takes to get some good players, we will be doing what you have to do to sustain excellence in the NFL—build depth and skill at most if not all positions. I think that is what the Browns have been missing.

To look at Mangini’s history, just look at the Jets the past 3 years. Also, he seems like a reincarnation of Belichick when he was with the Browns. Fans don’t like his decisions, Kosar-gate, the media is ripping him apart, for Mangini its national (Augustus Gloop). He also has a bad personality just like Belichick. History is repeating itself…but without the move.

Very strong post for a first. It’s hard to say but I believe in Mangini with one exception, Quinn. He NEEDS to give this guy a chance. If Anderson is playing well enough to remain the starter and Quinn wasn’t, he can deffinitely get the ##$% outta Cleveland. Troy Aikman went 3-13 as a starter his first year and I think he had a fair career. Other than Anderson, the O C could get replaced. Mangini shouldd get atleast 2 years with his new draft class. With Mack, Davis, Mass, and Robi starting the foundation. Hopefully with Quinn at Q.

actually, the Cowboys were 1-15 his rookie season. And he was 0-11 as a starter.

by talonk on Oct 22, 2009 7:22 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

The thing i always hear people say is Troy Aikman did this in his ROOKIE season and Peyton Manning did this in his ROOKIE season, but lets face the facts, 1) Quinn is neither Aikman or Manning and 2) Quinn is in his 3rd year. He has had NFL coaching for 2 full seasons coming into this year, as well as being in a Pro type system with Charlie Weiss at Notre Dame, and started 3 games last season and had a record of 1-2 (ironically enough the win was against the Bills). He has had a chance. Maybe not as much of a chance as most QB’s but at some point if you don’t show improvement then you must be sat down. I’m sure Mangini and Daboll watched film of Quinn last year and must not have seen much improvement from those games and this years games. I guess what i’m saying is he has had time to grow and he hasn’t done it. He played more like a guy worried about losing his job and his big p$y d$y instead of trying to win games. Then again now that he can’t get required time on the field for those incentives maybe its time to throw him back out there. But most importantly DA is not the answer and neither is Quinn we just have to deal with it.

If I can find a better coach Mangini is spelled as head coach, soon.
I do like him a lot, though. I think he is mentally tough and agile, and has a good attitude. I think his implementation skills have not seen fruition. I want him in the front office.
I don´t mind the sentimentalities, this is a storied franchise, and you don´t cut yourself off from tradition. This will be an all new team, though.

by mooncamping on Oct 23, 2009 9:47 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Why would Mangini being “agile” make any difference at all? Because he can run wind sprints (which I doubt) with the players?

by talonk on Oct 23, 2009 10:30 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I could use a 100 different words to describe Mangini.

Agile is no where near that list. I mean AGILE, really?

i can agree

i can agree but the decent player to the jets that guys stopped playing for us because he didnt want to be a brownie any more so i say f*** him. but i think either way you go QB wise is the same result . It is what it is and lets hope that next year will be better just like we have been since we came back to ohio. oh and rot in hell art!!

by uk1156 on Oct 27, 2009 2:46 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Alright, I can agree with you about Braylon, but if you say you want to put together the best team on the field to be competative, then why trade for Stuckey. Here is the deal, Mangini is sticking with Anderson because he “gives the Browns the best chance to win”. shouldn’t the same go for the rest of the team. Edwards was hands down the best receiver on the team. Okay, he had alot of drops, but he was still a deep threat so the QB could spread the field. We don’t have that anymore, and we wonder why the past 3 weeks we can’t move the ball. Anderson can’t throw short, and now he has no deep threat. I want to see Quinn in, but Mangini is not making it easy on Anderson by getting rid of his weapons.
