I too have sat through the hiring's and bunglings of Chris Palmer and watched us finally show some progress under Romeo Eatwell, and then watched us slide right back down the slippery slope...but as my headline says...we are impatient and want to win, but just let them do what is needed...Jimmy Johnson built the Dallas Cowboys the same way, trades and draft-picks!!! I told a friend I am already writing this year off, and like the way Mangini is handling things...and to quote one more great football mind...remember what Coach Parcells said...if you want me to cook the meal, let the chef shop for the groceries...continue on Big Chef Mangini!

I like the way they are going.Like you said same blueprint the Cowboys used to get them self back. But they also went out and had good scouts to find what they needed.Just hope this staff does the same thing.Done pick someone based off what others say but what they can bring to the field.Make good picks with what you need to fill and build around them.

The Browns are not the Dallas Cowboys, nor is Mangini Jimmy Johnson. Let’s Compare… JJ came from college, University of Miami, where he had Wins and National Championships as a head coach. He then used that knowledge and built his team. Eric Mangini was a defensive coordinator for Belichick (who I believe runs the defense on the Patriots, always have and will). He won some Super Bowl Rings, AS A COORDINATOR. He then got his shot at the big time for 3 yrs for the Jets. He was unable to establish anything there. He was then fired and hired for the Browns job. Who hires someone who gets fired and has never been a winner?

The Browns are not the Dallas Cowboys

Actually, the Cowboys were terrible when Jimmy Johnson took over much like the Browns are now, which is his point.

JJ came from college, University of Miami, where he had Wins and National Championships as a head coach.

Winning a national championship in college does not incidate that a coach will be successful in the NFL. There are numerous examples of great college coaches who couldn’t win in the NFL.

We don’t know about Mangini. I’m not saying he’s going to be a great coach but you can’t say for certain that he won’t. He did have two winning seasons in three years with the Jets so I’m not sure what you mean by “never been a winner”. If Brett Fave hadn’t got injured last season the Jets would have made the playoffs and Mangini would probably still have his job. It’s way too early to judge him.

JJ Butch Davis came from college, University of Miami, where he had Wins and National Championships was cheated out of a shot at a National Championship as a head coach. He also won a couple of rings as a coordinator in Dallas.

The point being: past performance isn’t as important as you think it is — especially at the college level.

by golanbatrac on Oct 26, 2009 11:23 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Butch Davis has had the most success coaching the Browns since their return. 7-9, 9-7, 5-11, 3-8 (24-35 overall). he took over an abizmal team and was able to do something with them. His biggest downfall was he was the GM too. There was no checks and balances. Wait this sounds familiar…

by holmes213 on Oct 26, 2009 12:11 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

He is coaching some damn good football at UNC too.

by SpecialBrownie on Oct 26, 2009 10:28 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Here’s the thing. Jimmy Johnson’s resume wasn’t much better than Butch Davis’. Bill Bellichek’s resume (when hired by NE) wasn’t much different from Mangini’s. Savage was considered a top line GM candidate.

You see the clear logic of the hires. I’m so sick of blaming Lerner for everything.

by Ryan Kelsey on Oct 27, 2009 12:06 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Agree. Lerner is clearly not the problem.

by golanbatrac on Oct 27, 2009 12:21 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yup. I mean, it’s not like he hired a guy to be offensive coordinator who had never held that position before, then promoted that guy to head coach when he couldn’t find anyone to hire for that position. Then six games in to his second season he took away play-calling from the coach and gave it to a guy he just hired from the bingo hall. Those would be really stupid moves for the owner to make.

Lerner’s hires haven’t worked out so far, but all his hires looked good at the time. You can’t say he’s not trying to get good people in here. All the whining about Lerner is just stupid.

by Buckeye Brad on Oct 27, 2009 7:36 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I disagree. The Mangini hire was not clean on paper. Mangini had his issues in New York or he would not of gotten fired.
This hire is on Lerner and he screwed it up.

by Grockcubs on Oct 27, 2009 9:21 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I don’t get this. His firing was a bit of surprise. He was blamed for the collapse last year, when he was forced to take Favre on his team and watched him fall apart.

by Ryan Kelsey on Oct 27, 2009 10:25 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Mangini was fired because Favre injured his shoulder and fell apart at the end of the season. Before that, many people were calling the Jets the best team in the AFC after they knocked off the Titans. He had a winning record in two of his three seasons there. What “issues” did he have?

by Buckeye Brad on Oct 27, 2009 10:57 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Belichick quit the Ravens and went back to his mentor. He learned more from Parcell by being as assistant head coach and defensive coordinator for the Jets. He then went tho NE and became what he is today. Here is the difference, Mangini was fired from NY and got another Head Coaching job. I realize he can never go back to Belichick now, but he needs more guidence before he should get another head coaching job. I don’t think too many Belichick followers make good head coaches, because in my oppinion he calls all the plays. and good for him, look at his record.

by holmes213 on Oct 27, 2009 10:30 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Six of Belichick’s assistant coaches have become NFL head coaches:

    * Romeo Crennel, Cleveland Browns (2005–2008)
    * Al Groh, New York Jets (2000)
    * Josh McDaniels, Denver Broncos (2009–present)
    * Eric Mangini, New York Jets (2006–2008), Cleveland Browns (2009–present)
    * Nick Saban, Miami Dolphins (2005–2006)
    * Jim Schwartz, Detroit Lions (2009–present)

Five more assistant coaches have become NCAA Division I head coaches:

    * Kirk Ferentz, Iowa (1999–present)
    * Al Groh, Wake Forest (1981–1986), Virginia (2001–present)
    * Pat Hill, Fresno State (1997–present)
    * Nick Saban, Michigan State (1995–1999), LSU (2000–2004), Alabama (2007–present)
    * Charlie Weis, Notre Dame (2005–present)

Seven assistant coaches or executives under Belichick have become assistant head coaches, coordinators or executives in the NFL:

    * Jeff Davidson, offensive coordinator of the Carolina Panthers
    * Thomas Dimitroff, general manager for the Atlanta Falcons
    * John Mitchell, assistant head coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers
    * Ozzie Newsome, general manager for the Baltimore Ravens
    * Scott Pioli, general manager for the Kansas City Chiefs
    * Rob Ryan, defensive coordinator for the Cleveland Browns
    * Mike Tannenbaum, general manager for the New York Jets

I think it’s too early to say that Belichick’s assistants have been bad, or to ascribe any theory as to why they’ve been bad. In five years time we’ll have a better idea.

“In Belichick’s last season in Cleveland the Browns finished 5–11. In November of that year Browns owner Art Modell announced he would move the team to Baltimore after the season. Belichick resigned early in February 1996.”

This is from a site, belichick did not want to be apart of the move, i give him credit for that.

Belichick Fired By Modell
15-Feb-1996, Associated Press
“Art Modell needs to find a new coach. Modell, owner of the Baltimore NFL franchise formerly known as the Cleveland Browns, fired coach Bill Belichick on Wednesday…. The Browns went 5-11 last season, losing seven of their final eight games after Modell announced his intention to take the franchise to Baltimore…. In a statement, Belichick, 43, expressed his gratitude to the Browns organization. ‘This team has an excellent future and I wish them well,’ Belichick said. ‘I will review my options with regard to my future in the NFL.’”

Only six months before we get a shot at Jake Locker.

Either way let’s see what he does with his 11 (I would bet Mankinis will add more) draft picks and next year’s season before we call for him to get the boot. Belicheck only amassed 5 wins his first season in NE, with a team that had undeniably more talent than this.

by L Train on Oct 26, 2009 11:26 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Build baby, Build

Let’s not look at championship rings or what the other teams have or look at the past teams to find glory. Bottom line is, this team hit rock bottom, so the Browns must rebuild for next year. If the Browns can not beat the Pittsburgh Steelers in the regular season, then the Browns suck, period. Do not hype yourself up or convince yourself this true, when reality set in, disappointment will deflate that ego. By looking at the eras of Browns football; The Kardiac Kids or the Schottenheimer days, (look at the Bud Carson, Bill Belichick, or Butch Davis era) the Browns beat Pittsburgh; until the Browns meet that standard, do not accept anything else. As far as the Draft is concern, no more quarterback, period. Start with your defense first, then bring in key offensive players who do not get hurt, with good work ethic, and great football attitude. And it doesn’t matter if they are from Division I-AA or some small college in the South, the Browns need ALL-American team, national championship or college award winning players to make an impact to this team.

key offensive players who do not get hurt

Great idea! Reminds me of great investment advice: the best way to make money is to buy stocks and wait for them to go up. If they don’t go up, don’t buy them.

this team hit rock bottom

I said that last year. It can always get worse.

by Bernie19Kosar on Oct 27, 2009 1:40 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

The only problem that I have with this rebuild is that aside from Massaquoi and Mack our draft picks are seeing the field very often so far. If any of these guys are supposed to be building blocks, then lets slap a bit of mortar on them and stick them in the wall.

It’s not as if we’d be throwing the season away if they don’t pan out.

But if the coaching and play calling don’t improve (I’m lookin’ at you, Daboll, not to mention McDonald and Smith) then it really isn’t going to matter who we draft.

by JustBob on Oct 26, 2009 6:45 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Lets see Mangini vs Johnson sort of like the 99 Browns against the 85 Bears ya think?
Dwight Clark and Policy had more draft picks then they could count in the first two years of the Browns start up and how did that work. Pardon me for being just a tad skeptical when it comes to the Browns and draft picks.
I can’t get to enthused with this staff after the on going debacle at the QB position. I guess the jury is out.

by Grockcubs on Oct 26, 2009 7:51 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I was extremely surprised we passed on Sanchez this year. I was smelling championship too.

by SpecialBrownie on Oct 26, 2009 10:30 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

In case you hadn’t heard, Clark and Policy don’t run the Browns any more. What they did with their picks is irrelevant to our current situation.

by Buckeye Brad on Oct 26, 2009 11:11 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

The point I was making this franchise since the return in 1999, has had than a less than stellar record when it comes to drafting players. And I also disagree about Policy and Clark not having anything to do with the current situation. You continue to have poor drafts year after year, guess what, you create a atmosphere of losing, consequently years of losing records, and in turn the constant merry go around of coaches. If Clark and Policy would of have had a good base of talent to start off this franchise and created a winning environment around this town, our current situation I would wager would look a whole lot better.
Don’t throw your smuggness at me, I got an idea about this current situation, I have been around. You may not agree with it, just like I don’t agree with everything you offer. I guess the difference is I don’t add smug comments in return.

by Grockcubs on Oct 27, 2009 9:30 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Of course if Clark and Policy had drafted better then we’d be in a better situation now. And if Butch Davis had drafted better than we’d be in a better situation now. That’s because we would have better players as part of our organization and not be such a crappy team. But that has nothing to do with the draft moves we make going forward.

Do you really think that Kokinis and Mangini’s football decisions are affected by a “losing atmosphere” that was created by Policy and Clark? That’s absurd. They are going to make their own draft decisions regardless of what moves were made previous to them. The Patriots had a losing atmosphere before Belichick took over. The Cowboys had a losing atmosphere before Jimmy Johnson took over. There are many examples of a new regime going to a team and building a winner. Our previous draft results under different management have absolutely no bearing on what moves Kokinis and Mangini will make going forward.

There isn’t some bad karma hanging over Berea which infects the brains of every Browns executive. That’s what you seem to be saying, and that’s a simply perposterous idea which is why I replied the way I did.

by Buckeye Brad on Oct 27, 2009 11:08 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Fair enough. I guess your optimism is stronger for Mangini/Kokinis than mine.
We respectfully disagree. There is nothing that Mangini has done to this point that distills any confidence for me. This is 1991 all over for me, and this franchise has not been the same since.

by Grockcubs on Oct 27, 2009 5:31 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I can’t think of one draft pick that I absolutely hate from Mangini. I think he went in with a good idea. He continued his mindset towards next year. Trades during this season to get even more picks in the draft. Who knows what you can get out of the draft. He may trade some picks for some players. We aren’t the only team in the league that’s struggling. Other teams need picks also. Who knows what they are willing to give up. Stay optimistic!!

And for someone to say they wanted Sanchez, is ratarded. He played one season with a lot of talent. to go for a guy with one season under his belt, doesn’t make any sense. We did that with Anderson and look where we are with our QB position.

by The naome40 on Oct 27, 2009 8:13 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I get pretty tired of the “Sanchez” rant. The guy had a couple of good games and then lost 3 in a row. He win’s one against the lowly Raiders and “he’s back”. Teams just needed some tape on the guy outside of his stellar 16 games at USC to figure him out. Believe me, he will be throwing INTs like they are in his job description by week 10 and will be riding pine by week 14.

by the irish chop on Oct 27, 2009 4:32 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Yea people need to realize he played at USC….. they don’t just have okay players. They recruit playmakers on offense and defense. He had a lot of talent surrounding him. They made most of the plays. No disrespect to the kid but he’s way overrated.
