Downhill... and no I'm not talking about the Browns...
Why have the "fans" from cleveland.com/browns site invaded this one? I can always count on good comments from a handful (not trying to leave anyone out) ChrisPokorny, Buckeye Brad, Roger Dorn, Rufio, kwoog and a few others... but man if this site hasn't been infested by some of the least insightful, argumentative, negative "fans" next to those on the plaindealers site. It's really hard to read through all the noise.
Chris,
This site, even through the loosing seasons, didn't seem to be a place for rampant negativity and immaturity. I don't know what 'powers' they give you as moderator, and I'll assume you have better things to do anyway, but it would be fantastic to ride this site of some of the worst offenders. Then maybe the Browns will start winning ;)
Appreciate the effort you and a few others put in to making this a good place to find out about the Browns and for the insightful comments on key topics. Hope it stays that way.

While there are cancerous posters on this site, Chris has no power unless they perform something slanderous against another poster or the site. It’s a catch 22 of a moderator – he doesn’t really have full control.

Just the other day, I noticed that the Cavs SBN site, Fear the Sword, is linked on Cleveland.com as a Cleveland Sports blog. Maybe they found their way here through that association, or as I’m sure has been happening, through the Yahoo affiliation. The Cavs and Browns have been making national news for various reasons (usually bad), and as those stories appeared on Yahoo Sports, I think some of the more casual, nonsensical fans found their way through that. You don’t see that on Let’s Go Tribe, which could be directly attributed to the Indians not making much national news and the swift hand struck by their dictators moderators..

Even since changing avatars you have been quite negative, but it’s alright to have some negative posters. AT LEAST, you usually have evidence and reasonable backgrounds.
by SpecialBrownie on Oct 26, 2009 11:26 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Criticisms are certainly valid, but they must be intelligent criticisms and not whining just for the sake of whining (which is what some people who come here do). Good fans don’t always have to say good things about the team but they have to be able to back up their statements with facts.

The one and done posters are the worst. I’ve gotten to the point where if I don’t recognize the username, I don’t even bother. They just clog up the site. Usually I just let Brad or someone will take care of them and call them out for being an idiot.
Now there are others that I often disagree with, and even think are totally illogical (sorry mooncamping and rocland), but I will discuss things with them because at least they are going to respond with something- even if it is more nonsense.

The thing that I want to stress here is this:
You NEVER have to agree with everyone. As long as you have a reason, and have an adult way of getting your point across, you should never have a problem getting a word in.
I think people sometimes get the wrong idea about some posters not allowed to having an opposing view point. Be different. Think outside the box. Just have a good reason for doing so. Instead of saying “MANGINA IS A IDIOT!” or “i’m not lookin it up you do it. i know its true” give the reasons why you think that Mangini is in over his head. As long as you bring facts and a different viewpoint no one here should give you a hard time.

No kidding. What’s the status of American football in Japan?
I live in Aus and I know people are starting to notice it. (A lot of help due to it being on free-to-air and, sadly, Friday Night Lights – more people know Matt Saracen than Tom Brady). What about Japan though?

We do. The people who do follow football though, I’ve noticed that they don’t follow rugby. People who follow rugby don’t follow football.
I’m in the minority in that I follow both.
It’s not so much ‘not noticing’ I suppose. I used the wrong verb there. I really meant to say ‘starting to get into it’.

I have to say, even with the signal to noise ratio growing a bit worse in recent days, I love this place. It’s the best forum for Browns discussion I’ve come across so far, and the high number of smart, well reasoned posters here make it worth wading through any number of goofbags. Hey, I even think mooncamping has his own bizarre charm!

I like to take the good things away from this site, such as the other day when Buckeye Brad and I had a lengthy argument about a particular writer. As a “noob” to posting…one of the reason’s I come here as opposed to the Browns official site is because people on there just seem to come up with the crazy and depressing ideas. “Lerner needs to sell the team”, “Fire Mangini”, “Pay Cowher whatever he wants to be our couch”….it’s like ENOUGH!!! What I do not get is…we had a loosing season last year. The flaws in this team were exposed. We have had a tough scedule thus far, not like 2007. Mangini needs to be given the time to change this team from a loser to a winner. The press has piled on. The fans have piled on. Stories exaggerated and impatience at a ridiculous level. I remember when the NYC fans wanted to run Coughlin out of town for his ways….oh…until he helped them win a SB.
Relax. Give the guy a chance and realize you didn’t higher Jesus (or insert deity here)…miracles will not happen in 7 games.

Pay Cowher whatever he wants to be our couch"
I know this was just a typo, but somehow I like it. It’s clear that Cowher doesn’t want to coach the Browns, but maybe he would be willing to couch them. Or maybe he could resurrect Tim Couch. Or be a couch potato. Any of these would be good by me.

I don’t mind a negative post if it is well-researched and not full of hyperbole. In fact, I like a good post negative or otherwise that brings in some stat or angle I haven’t seen. What I don’t like to see is a lot of name-calling and bullying. I do my best to ignore this kind of thing but it is not pleasant to read it.
We follow a team and an organization that is made up of people. They should be respected even if the team is bad. Calling people “idiots” is something I’d never do to their face and so doing it here behind the anonymity of the board is just cowardly. Also, disrespecting people and calling it “free speech” is just wrong. The privilege of free speech is not a ticket to be rude and disrespectful.
The same is true of this board. We all like the Browns and so we share a lot in common. But behind the typing is a person and that person should be respected. If we got together at a sports bar, had some wings and watched a game, we’d probably all be friends by the end of the first quarter.

I knew the minute I hit “post” and it had “Couch” instead of “Coach”, the jokes would start…nice job Noob! :) hahahaha.
One last thing, for the love of God…I am sick of people saying how certain players “suck”…these guys can run faster than most of us, lift more weight, take a hit from a 350 pound juggernaut and come back week after week for more. They are the elite of the elite. Give ’em break. Playing and succeeding in this league is tough…but they are far from “Bums” and could school 99% of the general pop any day.

It’s any given Sunday….these guys have the talent. This is where coaching comes in. Utilizing a guys strengths, placing him in the right situations to succeed. We always want to run guys out of town as being garbage and then they succeed elsewhere. I’m starting to wonder if it’s not the owner that is the problem, or the coach, or the players…but the fans who can’t support what they have. Even when the Redskins were getting whooped on by the Eagles last night…those fans still got loud, still cheered…where is that with us? I hope our my city by the lake isn’t becoming a bandwagon town, but with every new Steeler shirt I see when I come back to visit…I’m startin’ to wonder.
by the irish chop on Oct 27, 2009 4:40 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Well, in all due respect that crowd quickly died out and started calling for the OWNERS head. And players CAN suck. No amount of coaching can change certain players. There is such a thing as some have it and most don’t. The idea of a system QB is that you flourish in a system built around you and your strengths. When you’re put in a real environment that tests you against your actual talent and knowledge, 9/10 most QBs blow it.

I hear your concern Guage, and am always open to suggestions. A few members have emailed me personally in the past and we’ve discussed ways that I can better monitor certain types of posters. Buckeye Brad has done a good job moderating some of the topics in the past.
As SB Nation grows as a network, all of the sites, particularly those who are suffering losing seasons such as we are, will certainly be prone to the comments that make you want to just have a little “ignore” button for certain individuals. Typically though, these are people who see a post of ours from the Yahoo feed, come over, post once, and then never return (unless they see a post through Yahoo again). It’s always a tough decision though, because while “negative negativity” doesn’t add to the discussion, the second their content gets removed, we’ll see tons of ludicrous posts from them on free speech and how this site his full of nazis, lol.
Maybe I’ll consult Jay from over at Let’s Go Tribe…in the past, it seems like a few of you guys have liked how he’s handled moderating things…
