Am I the only one who feels good about the game?
We actually played hard. We played to win. We had some (not enough) agressive play calling, the coaches showed some life, the guys actually looked a little pumped. There's a lot to be excited about, although we didn't get the win, we nearly did. It almost feels like a win to me, after suffering through so many terrible losses.
Our O-line played decent, although Joe thomas gave up a sack, which Anderson practically walked into. Harrison played nicely, although we do need Jamal back for goal line situations. Jennings looked good on his lone touch. Anderson played sorta streaky, but considering the circumstances with a QB switch and not much work with the receivers, I thought he played nicely. Edwards did not have a reception, which was his fault since he was targeted 3 times. Massaqoui (did I spell that right?) looked absolutely fabulous. It was good to see Hediden catching passes, not Royal.
There was actually a Corey Williams sighting, he got a sack! Rogers probably had his best game ever, denying the Bengals 4 points by himself. Wimbley got a sack, but need work in coverage, Barton and Bowens actually looked younger then 70 and D'Qwell actually got behind the line of scrimage a couple times. Wright shut down just about everyone, except for that one TD pass. I believe he'll develop into a top 5 CB in a year or two. McDonald and Poteat looked better, and Adams had a pretty good game at corner and on ST's. Furrey played pretty well in his limited action at safety and Pool was an absolute ball hawk, nearly grabbing a second pick and being around tipped balls all day.
Cribbs was a monster on ST's, probably one of his best days as a Pro. It was great to see Rob Ryan fired up. It was kinda funny because a guy I was atching the game with looks just like Ryan. There was even a Mangini smile sighting! Another personal sidenote was that I made the same mistake Gannon did about Cribbs getting a chance to return it haha. I mentioned to everyone, we'll still have enough time to do a music city miracle play, which got funny looks.
This was a very exciting game, and although we didn't win, we had a big moral victory. We were all wrong to jump on Mangini after just 3 games. I can't wait till next Sunday to see if today was a fluke, or if Anderson will keep playing god (at least better the Brady). Go Browns! Steelers suck!

Who Needs K2?
If Mo Mass and DA develop a chemistry going forward, we’ll have the legitimate second WR threat that we’ve been missing. The fact is that Cincinnati is a good team this year with a much improved defense and their all pro QB back at the helm. I’m pretty sure they don’t want to see us again, and I’m looking forward to a rematch. The coaching staff needs to still call plays to win – like going for it during 4th and goal inside the 5 while the game’s tied – instead of settling for field goals. We have nothing to lose at this juncture.
The other positive that occurs to me now that we’re 4 weeks in: we’ve played some pretty damn good teams thus far. Hopefully we’ll continue to build chemistry and win some close ones in the near future. If DA can continue to make good decisions, convert 3rd downs, and throw the ball down field, it’ll open the run game. While Harrison looks good, I think we need to draft a RB next year in the second round at the latest – same goes for the OLB position.

Yes, OLB is definently a need, unless Hall steps up this year. We should probably grab a corner, maybe pretty high if McDonald continues to be streaky. HB for sure though. We also probably should grab a DLineman, since all 3 starting DL guys re over 30.

Good post, although Mangini is 0-4 now, and people ‘jumping’ on him IMO was deserved.
2. Anderson needs a talking to. He shouldn’t be playing ‘God,’ God doesn’t throw pics in the red zone or run into a sack.

A guard to replace Fraley.
A center to replace Steinbach, if he sucks, once we realise he´s a better center than Mack.
Cornerbacks that are run stoppers. Goodbye Pool, because people refuse to realise your size makes you more suited to be such a run stopper at CB.
A free safety, because people are insistent Wright should continue playing CB, although more suited to FS. Abe Elam is solid at SS.
As far as I´m concerned Quinn and Anderson are gone. If we do need a quarterback, I choose: Kevin Craft, UCLA, or Ricky Stanzi, Iowa, or Ben Chappell, Indiana. Or wait for Jimmy Clausen, Notre Dame, next year.

I actually agree in a sense that our corners’ tackling has been atrocious.
by Roger Dorn on Oct 5, 2009 8:29 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Wow, so many things wrong here. Fraley is only playing gaurd because of an injury.
Steinbach plays LG, he’s never played Center in his 7 NFL seasons.
Cornerbacks are the least important players in stopping the run in the NFL. Pool is probably too big for CB.
Wright is developing into a top corner, notice that teams rarely pick on him. He is too small to play FS.
None of those QB’s are top prospects and don’t come from good teams, why would you want them, when you could grab McCoy, Bradford or one of those guys.

Then I need to clarify.
Hank Fraley and Alex Mack are properly proportioned to be good guards. I would have to hear that they failed at it.
Eric Steinbach has short legs and a long torso, which lends itself towards playing center. Although he gained prominence at guard, he is lauded for his versatility, which allows him to play any position on the offensive line. I think he has missed his calling so far.
You are right, that it is currently fashionable to employ little guys at cornerback, and that they are generally not expected to defend the run. This is a fallacy. What came first, the chicken (midget cornerbacks) or the egg (all they do is cover)? This trend will change.
The issue with Pool is not whether he´s too big for CB, but whether he is fast and agile enough. I do realise, that what I´m asking for, requires a rare breed, big and strong, but fast and agile. It´s not an impossible order, that type is just not sought out, yet.
Eric Wright is comparable to Ryan Clark of the Steelers, who happens to be the best and can play both strong and free safety. Once again, you are right if you follow consensus opinions.
Not only are they not top prospects, yet, Ben Chappell and Ricky Stanzi are Juniors, and would have to declare early. But from the action I´ve seen in the NCAA this year, Ben Chappell is the best field general, and Craft and Stanzi are the most mobile with the smoothest delivery and release. Clausen is a prodigy, and getting him is unlikely.
by mooncamping on Oct 5, 2009 9:46 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Mack and Fraley might be proportioned to play gaurd, but they’ve probably never played it since pee-wee. Steinbach is too tall and not big enough to play center, centers are usually shorter sqauter guys. I’m not in favor of 5’9 guys playing corner, but what is the primary responsibility of a corner to cover WR’s. Has a run-stopping corner every made it to the Pro Bowl, or have you even ever heard of one??? Nope. Less then 15% of runs are even run to the outside, where the corner would have to make the tackle. Often, the best corners have been guys who can barely tackle (Prime Time). Pool is doing fine at FS, why move him.
It’s kinda ironic here, you’re complaing about us needing run-stopping corner’s, which much mean that our corners aren’t good against the run, so they aren’t strong and can’t tackle well right? Yet you want to move on of our corners (Wright) to FS where he would often be the guy who would have to stop a breakaway run and where tackling is very important??? I smell a contradicion here.
Ryan Clark is the best? Oh yea, you’re right, that’s why you never hear of that SS who has long hair and wears #43. Clark is the reason why the Steelers defense is doing so well right now, I mean with Polumalu they gave up a terrible amount of13 points compared to over an average of 20 when he hasn’t played. Wow, Polumalu really sucks and Clark is an All-Pro. News to me, I’d rather have Pool or Elam then Clark.
I’d like to see in 5-10 years how McCoy and Bradford do in the NFL compared to Chappell and Stanzi. Quinn is the supposed “field general”, yet Anderson scored more points in 6 quarters then Brady did in 10. Craft and Stanzi should be great because last time I checked, mobility and delivery were the #1 and #2 thing for a QB to have, way ahead of accuracy and football smarts.
I don’t mean to make fun of any of the players or be personal with you, but dude, you really need a football check. Anyway your real name rhymnes with Fat Dillon?

Most people have found it’s best to just ignore his comments. His has some bizzarre idea of how football should be played which doesn’t match up with the way any team in the NFL actually plays the game. It’s not worth your time and effort responding to him.

Dude, Ryan Clark is the best free safety in the NFL, playing strong safety.
Polamalu is successful, because he is entirely unencumbered, the guy roams and roves around like he follows no rules. What´s surprising about a heat seeker, having a lot of tackles and interceptions. His form is poor, he just runs whereever he wants to spearing anyone with a ball.
When will you realise, a lot of the current stars in the NFL are merely enabled to look good?
I never questioned Abe Elam at strong safety. He will also be one of the best.

Did anyone watch the “court” thing on College Football live where Holtz had to produce evidence as to why Clausen was the leading Heisman candidate, while Mark May hated on Clausen and ND?
The best sequence went something like this:
(ESPN Guy talking about what’s on next, right before the commercial break): "Lou, did you just give Mark “the finger”!?
(Holtz): “No, I just gave him half the peace sign.”
Awesome.

Charly Frye, Brady Quinn…it don’t matter; You all wanted them, saying how good it would make the browns. I will tell you that it don’t matter who is qb in Cleveland, they will never make it without a guy to teach them how to BE a QB in the NFL. Coaching is needed even for some of the best players to leave college and that is not getting done in cleveland. I’m not saying Mangini is a bust, but Please… he is learning the ropes as head coach on our time and that is wrong, Also, whos is he willing to bring in for his coaching staff? It will never be someone that is smarter then him, be it on the offensive or Defensive side of the ball. Mangini is still not ready to be a consistend headcoach in the NFL. We scored some points, and it sounded like our offense wasn’t atrocious. That’s a step forward in my book.
Wimbley is pretty good in coverage for a 260lb pass rushing linebacker, though.

I can’t imagine possibly taking a QB in the first round again just 3 years after taking Brady Quinn. Quinn or Anderson may not be the answer but if we can build up our defense then maybe we can make either of them very serviceable to our team.
I never realized how important a safety can really be to your team until Troy Polamalu got hurt for the Steelers. They are still a very good defensive team, but not nearly as good without him. So in that respect I think we should take possibly another stud ball hawker in Safety Eric Berry out of Tennessee. I can’t remember who posted it before but we saw a very good highlight reel of him from last season. He seems like he is in the same mold as Polamalu and Ed Reed.

Agreed. We cannot take another QB after Quinn. In fact, BQ should be traded for some picks if the price is right. At this point, I’d take a second rounder for him. The draft is going to be interesting because I think that we may be in a position to get Eric Berry or Taylor Mays in the first round even though our biggest need is OLB and RB IMO. If Barry and Mays are as good as folks say they are and more talented than comparable OLBs and RBs in their draft class, it’s hard to pass up picking one of them in that first round. Who doesn’t want that Ed Reed or Polamalu-type player on his team?
The real question comes in the second round. Does anyone know what the draft class for 3-4 OLBs and RBs looks like this year?
by chitown browns fan on Oct 5, 2009 10:25 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
RBs are better than last year, but it looks like a weak for OLB
by TheRealSlimShady on Oct 6, 2009 9:04 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
It looks like a great draft class for DL. A lot of the studs are 4-3 DTs who would play DE for us and probably be able to rush the passer. There are also a lot of college DEs but I don’t know how many of them will be able to stand up and play 3-4 OLB.
Ricky Sapp out of Clemson, Sergio Kindle from Texas, George Selvie from USF, Jerry Hughes from TCU, Jermaine Cunningham out of Florida, and Brandon Lang out of Troy are all probably candidates to move to 3-4 OLBs.
by rufio on Oct 6, 2009 10:56 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I also think that Alabama has some good 34 DEs that we could pick in the mid rounds if that is a position we are looking for. They wont have to adjust to a completely different defense.
by TheRealSlimShady on Oct 6, 2009 5:16 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Eric Berry is more Ed Reed than Polamalu, and is awesome. A safety who can rush the passer, cover huge TEs and backs, cover slot WRs, play centerfield, come up to play the run, shed blocks, and flat out make plays can really open up a defense schematically. I don’t know if Berry can do all of those things at a pro bowl level, but I’d bet he can do several of them at a pro bowl level. He seems like a “Mangini guy” when compared to Mays, too; the savvy, smart “football player”, and not the freak athlete who never seems to play up to his billing.
Regardless, I do think we could take a QB in the first round, but it would really have to be the right situation. Baltimore didn’t shy away from Flacco because they had a prior first round bust, and Atlanta went right after Matt Ryan when they needed to, despite the whole Vick thing. I do think it would have to be a guy we really, really like who falls to us with no outstanding players available at our other positions of need.
So if we went on a winning streak and got say the 12th pick, and then Bradford dropped to us, Berry was off the board and there were no clear-cut CB or pass rushing OLB there for us, I wouldn’t mind taking a QB. If we’re in the top 5, I agree, no thanks on the QB.
by rufio on Oct 6, 2009 11:08 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I agree with you in that I believe we probably have a first round bust on our hands, but I’m not so sure DA can’t develop into our solution at the position. He needs some coaching on the decision-making portion of his game to cut down on interceptions and to learn the details of this regime’s offense, but I can’t help but remember how many balls last year were dropped in crucial situations.
Having said that, unless he’s a total flop this year, I’d like to see Berry, if possible, in the first round, and the strongest OLB or RB prospect if Berry’s off the board.
by chitown browns fan on Oct 6, 2009 12:50 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I still think that decision is best made if it isn’t entirely based on need.
Yeah, those are some big needs for us and we need to take that in to account, but we should consider the individual players as well. There is still a lot to be learned about those players before the draft.

On the "we’ve played some pretty tough teams" thread…
Looks like Minnesota is going to hand it to Green Bay. I think one of the most interesting things is that Allen has 3.5 sacks tonight and a forced fumble. In our game against Minnesota, Allen had 0 sacks, 0 tackles and 1 assist. Thomas handled the guy and that is impressive. Thomas is a beast!

I noticed that, too, and was thinking the same about Thomas. Although, to be fair, didn’t the commentators say that the starting LT who would usually block Allen was out? Still, I thought our defense in the first half of the Vikings game played their best ball of the season thus far notwithstanding the whole game effort in the Cinci game.
