Cleveland Browns vs. Detroit Lions - Official Game Thread

Cleveland Browns at Detroit Lions, Nov 22, 2009 1:00 PM EST

The Browns game is blacked out this week...for Detroit Lions fans. This game is considered "the joke game," but all of us are still pulling for a win today, right?

CLEVELAND BROWNS (1-8) WEEK 11 DETROIT LIONS (1-8)
VS.
Date: November 22, 2009 Location: Cleveland, OH

Radio: WTAM, 1100 AM Over/Under: 37½

Don Criqui & Randy Cross

We're underdogs to last year's 0-16 and this year's 1-8 Detroit Lions. If that doesn't tell you how our season has gone, then crawl out from under the rock and watch today's game.

Let's start off this week's preview with the overall team statistics heading into Week 11...

OFFENSE

Category Browns
Lions
Points Scored 8.7 (32nd) = Push 15.9 (26th)

Rushing 98.1 (26th) = -1 103.1 (21st)

DEFENSE

Category Browns Lions

Passing 228.3 (20th) = +5 271.7 (32nd)
Rushing 165.8 (30th) = +1 114.6 (19th)
Total Defense (yards) 394.1 (32nd) = Push 386.2 (31st)

CLEVELAND BROWNS Position DETROIT LIONS
Besides Buffalo, this might be the only team we can be labeled as "even" at the quarterback position.
- QB - Matthew Stafford hasn't had a good season, but a rookie gets time to take his lumps with a bad team.
We don't want to give the ball to Jamal Lewis a lot. We don't want to give it to Jerome Harrison at all. Chris Jennings is being sprinkled in. Someone needs to carry the load.

RB - Kevin Smith has had a poor yards-per-carry average this season (3.4), but has three touchdowns and has done "ok" given the circumstances.
If our receivers can't get off of press coverage today, then we might have to worry about the prospects of Massaquoi or Robiskie contributing next year too.

WR - Calvin Johnson is still a star in the making. For the Lions' sake, hopefully they don't trade their best receiver again, because they'll just draft another one.
The offensive line looked a little bit shaky against the Ravens last week, but against the 32nd ranked Lions defense, it's hard to believe they'll be tested the same.
-
OL
Their offensive line is so bad, Yahoo Sports doesn't even show them as having a right guard. OK, they aren't horrible, but the Browns have the edge at youth in Joe Thomas and Alex Mack.
Shaun Rogers might have a little extra motivation to play well today against his former team.
- DL
The Lions don't have any stars on their line, much like the Browns with little to go on in terms of youth.
Kaluka Maiava and David Bowens have done very well at inside linebacker the past two weeks, with Jason Trusnik on the outside. Why does it seem more stable than when Jackson and Barton played the middle?

LB - Julian Peterson is getting up their in age, but with veterans Larry Foote and Ernie Sims to go along with them, the unit has the experience to sit back and defend Quinn's short passing approach.
Brandon McDonald hasn't shown enough that he will be a starting cornerback this year, but Eric Wright has held steady for the second year in a row.
-
DB
The Lions are ranked worst in the league against the pass. It'll be another epic tail if Brian Daboll chooses not to exploit that.
Joshua Cribbs is expected to play today despite last week's cheap shot taken on him.
- ST
I miss Dennis Northcutt at the receiver position. That's how bad it's been for us.

I preached this week that the expectations should be downgraded to "nothing" on offense. But, maybe I should hold off on that projection for a week. Every team the Browns have faced this season besides two of them are ranked in the top half of the league defensively. Our offense might not break out this week with long drives, but I believe our defense can set up Brady Quinn with a few short drives by creating turnovers.

FINAL PREDICTION: Cleveland Browns 13, Detroit Lions 10.
CHRIS' RECORD IN PICKING BROWNS GAMES: 8-1
CHRIS' OVERALL NFL PREDICTIONS RECORD: 103-42

This is the official gameday thread for the Cleveland Browns in Week 11 as they face the Detroit Lions. All comments regarding the game should be posted in this thread. Enjoy the game, and GO BROWNS!!!

does anyone know if the game would be blacked out in Bowling Green?

by The Brown Note on Nov 22, 2009 12:51 PM EST reply actions

what is that site that has the games? it’s like adhte.net or something like that but I can’t remember.

by JasonA on Nov 22, 2009 12:53 PM EST reply actions

Meh

This is the big one isn’t it?

The Basement Bowl.

by LondonBrown on Nov 22, 2009 12:56 PM EST reply actions

I think we’re calling it The Recession Bowl

by Simmsinns on Nov 22, 2009 1:01 PM EST up reply actions

Well there’s plenty of poverty on the field!

by LondonBrown on Nov 22, 2009 1:07 PM EST up reply actions

I get the Toledo CBS (WTOL) where I live (NW Ohio) and we don’t get Cleveland @ Detroit. What the fuck is that? Now I’ve got to watch this on a shitty internet stream rather than HD…

by Simmsinns on Nov 22, 2009 1:00 PM EST reply actions

what stream are you using?

by The Brown Note on Nov 22, 2009 1:01 PM EST up reply actions

Actually, this stream isn’t even up yet…

by Simmsinns on Nov 22, 2009 1:04 PM EST up reply actions

Indeed, I’ve tried every site I know (myp2p.eu, p2p4u.net, atdhe.net) and nothing…

by Simmsinns on Nov 22, 2009 1:10 PM EST up reply actions

GOT ONE!

Worst way I’ve watched a Browns game all season, but what else is there?

by Simmsinns on Nov 22, 2009 1:29 PM EST up reply actions

What’s going on with Robiskie? I don’t think he is injured. Surely he’ll grow, why is he not getting experience?

Last I checked Robiskie was on the injured list for the day

by jharbdo on Nov 22, 2009 1:30 PM EST up reply actions

…24 yard pass? what?

by emily522 on Nov 22, 2009 1:06 PM EST reply actions

yeah and it wasn’t like a 5 yard pass, 19 yard run haha

by emily522 on Nov 22, 2009 1:12 PM EST up reply actions

Stuckey makes an appearance!

by Roger Dorn on Nov 22, 2009 1:08 PM EST reply actions

I liked the 360 while in motion.

by golanbatrac on Nov 22, 2009 1:08 PM EST up reply actions

I have no visual today unfortunately.

by Roger Dorn on Nov 22, 2009 1:09 PM EST up reply actions

He motioned from left to right and completely juked the Lions linebackers with a 360 behind Mack.

by golanbatrac on Nov 22, 2009 1:16 PM EST up reply actions

wow second injury for the lions already

by emily522 on Nov 22, 2009 1:09 PM EST reply actions

man. i’ve never seen fewer people in the stands in nfl game before.

by DrewskiC on Nov 22, 2009 1:11 PM EST reply actions

It doesn’t look that bad.

by golanbatrac on Nov 22, 2009 1:15 PM EST up reply actions

you’d think a lot of them would show up to this. b/c the lions do have a chance to actually win.

by emily522 on Nov 22, 2009 1:19 PM EST up reply actions

Anyone have any stream suggestions? Particularly, Ustream or Justintv links?

by Simmsinns on Nov 22, 2009 1:12 PM EST reply actions

ok not a bad drive…

by emily522 on Nov 22, 2009 1:12 PM EST reply actions

quinn has more passing yards (40) then he did in one half against the first time they played baltimore.

the lions are 32nd in passing yards. but at least he’s doing something.

by emily522 on Nov 22, 2009 1:14 PM EST reply actions

Why the fuck would a Toledo station this we’re more interesting in Pittsburgh vs. Kansas City over the two closest area teams?

by Simmsinns on Nov 22, 2009 1:14 PM EST reply actions

Might be part of the blackout, it extended beyond Detroit.

by Roger Dorn on Nov 22, 2009 1:15 PM EST up reply actions

i’m assuming toledo is included in the blackout. isn’t it within a certain geographical radius?

by DrewskiC on Nov 22, 2009 1:15 PM EST up reply actions

Oh wow, I see. What a load of shit. Now I hate the NFL more than ever.

by Simmsinns on Nov 22, 2009 1:17 PM EST up reply actions

from wikipedia:

“The NFL defines “locally” as within a 75-mile radius of the stadium. Therefore, a TV blackout affects any market (affiliate station) whose terrestrial broadcast signal, under normal over-the-air conditions, penetrates into the 75-mile radius."

by DrewskiC on Nov 22, 2009 1:20 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah, Toledo is considered Lions country.

by golanbatrac on Nov 22, 2009 1:17 PM EST up reply actions

There’s still a good number of Browns fans. I’d say it’s probably 60/40.

by Simmsinns on Nov 22, 2009 1:19 PM EST up reply actions

by emily522 on Nov 22, 2009 1:16 PM EST reply actions

No one within 30 yards… At least they got the stop.

by golanbatrac on Nov 22, 2009 1:18 PM EST up reply actions

yeah i’ll give them that. almost a pick.

by emily522 on Nov 22, 2009 1:19 PM EST up reply actions

quinn was making good throws. hopefully they gave him some confidence.

by emily522 on Nov 22, 2009 1:20 PM EST reply actions

I hate these short kickoffs. Either kick it to Cribbs or kick it out of bounds, Schwartz.

by golanbatrac on Nov 22, 2009 1:21 PM EST reply actions

And I fuckin’ missed it……………….

by Simmsinns on Nov 22, 2009 1:22 PM EST up reply actions

I fucking hate this bullshit. I’m unbelievably pissed off.

by Simmsinns on Nov 22, 2009 1:23 PM EST reply actions

Blackout is stretched to Toledo, I live 90 minutes from Toledo but get there local stations + no stream = no Browns for me.

by Simmsinns on Nov 22, 2009 1:25 PM EST up reply actions

It was easily the best offensive play all year for the Browns, I’m sorry that you had to miss it.

pretty accurate, too. what the hell!

by Dawg Nuts on Nov 22, 2009 1:23 PM EST reply actions

i think that was the biggest play we’ve seen from scrimmage all year. last time i checked it was 34 yards.

by emily522 on Nov 22, 2009 1:24 PM EST up reply actions

Are you joking me? Awesome!

"There is a small, but important difference between peeing in the pool and peeing into the pool." - Demitri Martin

by Browns town on Nov 22, 2009 1:23 PM EST reply actions

we can run the table and finish 8-8.

by Dawg Nuts on Nov 22, 2009 1:23 PM EST reply actions

Awesome optimism there DN. I’m still gaping at that 24 on our side of the score board right now…

by RelapsingDawgCatcher on Nov 22, 2009 1:54 PM EST up reply actions

this is bs. the one week I can’t see a game online and they finally do something on offense. FML

by JasonA on Nov 22, 2009 1:23 PM EST reply actions

How about THAT throw?!?! Who says Quinn can’t throw deep??

by Buckeye Brad on Nov 22, 2009 1:23 PM EST reply actions

any defense that isn’t completely pathetic…

by Dawg Nuts on Nov 22, 2009 1:24 PM EST up reply actions

It’s not about the defense. Sure, he was wide open, but he still needed the arm strength to get the ball there.

by Buckeye Brad on Nov 22, 2009 1:26 PM EST up reply actions

i meant more that he never has time to throw a deep ball. or he isn’t patient enough in the pocket to if he gets any pressure.

by Dawg Nuts on Nov 22, 2009 1:27 PM EST up reply actions

but i get your point, he has the arm strength.

by Dawg Nuts on Nov 22, 2009 1:28 PM EST up reply actions

and just because he’s wide open doesn’t mean he’ll get it to him. could’ve been overthrown.

by emily522 on Nov 22, 2009 1:27 PM EST up reply actions

sorry. i posted that before you said your last comment.

by emily522 on Nov 22, 2009 1:29 PM EST up reply actions

no problem. go brownies!

by Dawg Nuts on Nov 22, 2009 1:30 PM EST up reply actions

Looked pretty good to me.

by golanbatrac on Nov 22, 2009 1:24 PM EST up reply actions

First TD by a RB or WR this season for the Browns. Week 11

by Roger Dorn on Nov 22, 2009 1:24 PM EST reply actions

More to come, let’s hope.

by golanbatrac on Nov 22, 2009 1:25 PM EST up reply actions

Seriously. Did anybody see that coming? Looks like throwing beyond the line of scrimmage really is better!

by JustBob on Nov 22, 2009 1:24 PM EST reply actions

who would have thought?

by Roger Dorn on Nov 22, 2009 1:25 PM EST up reply actions

hey, daboll. did you see that? how about you call some of THOSE plays more often?

by emily522 on Nov 22, 2009 1:25 PM EST reply actions

HEY! I’ve got an absolutely shitty stream, but it’s there nonetheless. A little too late though.

by Simmsinns on Nov 22, 2009 1:27 PM EST reply actions

Hey I survive on the Yahoo game channel- internet connection is too shitty for any streaming video. And supplement with your comments on here.

It’s been tough this season when you can’t even see how badly we’re playing.

by LondonBrown on Nov 22, 2009 1:28 PM EST up reply actions

You do have my sympathy if that means anything.

by Simmsinns on Nov 22, 2009 1:30 PM EST up reply actions

McDonald actually laid a pretty good hit on him there.

by Roger Dorn on Nov 22, 2009 1:27 PM EST reply actions

Sweet Jesus! McDonald actually HIT someone!

by golanbatrac on Nov 22, 2009 1:27 PM EST reply actions

3 and out!! This is starting off well . . .

by Buckeye Brad on Nov 22, 2009 1:27 PM EST reply actions

LOOK what happends when you turn the page of the playbook

by franklinbrownie41 on Nov 22, 2009 1:29 PM EST reply actions

I was actually worried that the Browns would get so caught up in worrying about Johnson that Northcutt would end up having a huge day.

by JustBob on Nov 22, 2009 1:29 PM EST reply actions

okay this live feed is TERRIBLE (some guy filiming his tv. from an angle. hah.) but it’s the only one i can find:

Haha, same one. But your link avoids the annoying advertisements.

And… BAM! It’s down.

by Simmsinns on Nov 22, 2009 1:33 PM EST up reply actions

Give it up and flip on the radio.

by golanbatrac on Nov 22, 2009 1:35 PM EST up reply actions

Is there a radio station I can listen to online? I am in New York

by Roger Dorn on Nov 22, 2009 1:36 PM EST up reply actions

Usually not. One of the Cleveland stations forgot to block their online feed one week but most of the time it’s blocked.

by golanbatrac on Nov 22, 2009 1:39 PM EST up reply actions

Say what you want but it would be huge to not be stuck with the number 1 overall pick. The pressure from the media and whatnot would be on the Browns to select a QB 1 overall

by Roger Dorn on Nov 22, 2009 1:29 PM EST reply actions

  1. is a curse isn’t it?

Unless there’s a Peyton Manning available.

by LondonBrown on Nov 22, 2009 1:30 PM EST up reply actions

I hate the number 1 pick.

by Roger Dorn on Nov 22, 2009 1:31 PM EST up reply actions

I guess the page stuck back on the playbook

by franklinbrownie41 on Nov 22, 2009 1:31 PM EST reply actions

Screen pass for a loss?

by LondonBrown on Nov 22, 2009 1:31 PM EST reply actions

they got the 1st on 3rd and 11

by emily522 on Nov 22, 2009 1:31 PM EST up reply actions

Looked like Harrison missed a block and Quinn dumped it to him just before he got killed.

by golanbatrac on Nov 22, 2009 1:32 PM EST up reply actions

Damn, we had a nice screen play set up there but the defense broke it up.

by Buckeye Brad on Nov 22, 2009 1:31 PM EST reply actions

vs weak secondary and strong linebackers are screen passes the way to go?

by LondonBrown on Nov 22, 2009 1:31 PM EST reply actions

he seems kinda slow though.

by Dawg Nuts on Nov 22, 2009 1:32 PM EST up reply actions

From what I saw in the Ravens game, he is slow.

by Roger Dorn on Nov 22, 2009 1:33 PM EST up reply actions

but seems to run hard though, too.

by Dawg Nuts on Nov 22, 2009 1:33 PM EST up reply actions

I would have liked to see Cribbs block a bit on that one.

by JustBob on Nov 22, 2009 1:35 PM EST up reply actions

ball movement? an offense? what is this?!

by emily522 on Nov 22, 2009 1:32 PM EST reply actions

by Chief WaDrew on Nov 22, 2009 1:34 PM EST up reply actions

i don’t think his knee was down. if it stands, great effort.

by emily522 on Nov 22, 2009 1:33 PM EST reply actions

well great effort either way.

by emily522 on Nov 22, 2009 1:34 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah, it’s close, but I haven’t seen any video evidence to show his knee was down so they can’t overturn it.

by Buckeye Brad on Nov 22, 2009 1:35 PM EST up reply actions

Never mind, his knee hit the ground.

by Buckeye Brad on Nov 22, 2009 1:36 PM EST up reply actions

I mean the play, have no idea what happened.

by Roger Dorn on Nov 22, 2009 1:36 PM EST up reply actions

Jennings slipped three tackles and turned a 3 yard loss into a 3 yard gain. Almost.

by golanbatrac on Nov 22, 2009 1:40 PM EST up reply actions

it looked like jennings just landed on a DT lineman and kept going, but his knee was down.

by emily522 on Nov 22, 2009 1:36 PM EST up reply actions

Jennings looked like he was tackled behind the line of scrimmage but turned out of it and ran for a few yards, on the replay, though, he was down.

That’s right, folks. A game in which the 2009 Browns are playing has just been called a score-a-thon. And the score is not lopsided.

51 points at halftime.

I think it’s safe to assume that no one saw this coming?

ok, so the defense kind of sucked the 2nd quarter. but the offense still looked nice. hopefully they’ll keep it up and ryan will talk some sense into this d.

It seems like the pass rush has been really slow.

And I think Maiave is still on the not-so-good side of the learning curve – maybe missed a few assignments.

Maybe the defense didn’t take Detroit seriously. Personally I think that the blitzes were killing the Browns, Stafford kept finding the player who would have been covered without a blitz.

I cant imagine the browns not taking anyone seriously. I don’t think they take themselves seriously. Thats the problem.

Chris, if you’re around, how about a 2nd half game thread? This one is getting slow.
