Nice read.
Regarding Eric Mangini though, those or unsubstantiated facts. And the media is doing a horrible job in passing on claims, and through a process of un-repudiating, validating unproven speculations, to dare other media proponents to either alleviate or further ratchet up these stipulations. That´s tabloid journalism.

More water bottle and mural BS.

this guy must have a personal beef with mangini

by notthatnoise on Nov 30, 2009 9:41 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

All I will say is that it’s naive to think that yelling terrible things at players is limited to only a few coaches.

by Roger Dorn on Nov 30, 2009 11:27 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

I agree, but that youtube clip is pretty extreme.

by Bernie19Kosar on Nov 30, 2009 2:21 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I haven’t watched it, but I can imagine. In any case, I think you’d have to fire a lot of coaches if we knew everything that was being said/done.

by Roger Dorn on Nov 30, 2009 3:51 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Possibly, but we do not know the ancillary issues behind it. Maybe this player was frequently hurting the team with selfish decisions on and off the field?

Anyway, it seems like the Kansas AD has had a long-time problem with Mangino and is using the poor season along with any evidence of being “mean” to fire him.

by gahnki on Dec 1, 2009 5:56 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

And Posnanski agrees with you.

by dgcambridge on Nov 30, 2009 2:36 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Which is exactly what Posnanski said . . . many times, in fact.

by Buckeye Brad on Nov 30, 2009 5:05 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Never implied that he didn’t say that.

by Roger Dorn on Nov 30, 2009 6:07 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

To elaborate, Posnanski makes the point multiple times (yes I can read) that most coaches are probably guilty of the same thing and yet still recommends that he be fired. I can’t find any other reason to fire Mangino other than the cruel remarks he makes to players.

By Posnanski’s logic then, we are to assume that either a. all coaches who make disparaging remarks should be fired, b. coaches who get caught making disparaging remarks should be fired or c. Posnanski just doesn’t like Mangino and recommended he be fired to make a cute tie in with the similarities in the name of Mangino and Mangini.

In short, I don’t agree.

by Roger Dorn on Nov 30, 2009 6:14 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

If I didn’t know you better, I would swear that you haven’t read the article. It’s entirely on the fence about Mangino, and explicitly probes the tricky question of when yelling at/disparaging players goes too far. That’s the point of the whole second page.

He’s very clear about Mangini – he thinks he’s a bad coach.

by dgcambridge on Nov 30, 2009 7:00 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I read the article. I also understand the waffling he went through, but his end conclusion was Mangini and Mangino should both go.

by Roger Dorn on Nov 30, 2009 7:23 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

One of us misreading it then.

I can not find where he calls for or recommends that Mangino be fired. He does think it’s probably going to happen, but is clear that he isn’t sure if its right. He certainly thinks Mangino might have gone too far.

I know we are used to reading the columnist calls for coach’s heads – those articles are a dime a dozen – but that’s not this article. That would be Whitlock.

by dgcambridge on Nov 30, 2009 7:44 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

You are right he doesn’t explicitly say it. I was assuming the title of the article “Let’s call the whole thing off” meant he wanted them both fired. Perhaps he carefully danced around his actual opinion so as not to really say anything at all.

by Roger Dorn on Nov 30, 2009 8:35 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

this guy bothers the hell out of me, he seems to have a very high opinion of himself, and i consistently get the feeling he’s not telling the truth when it comes to him personally. case in point:
“Mangino had often made a point of inviting me to come to Lawrence, Kan., for coffee or lunch some time so we could talk about the Cleveland Indians.” – this is probably true
“I always meant to go have a little Teepee Talk with Mangino, but never did.” – sure you always meant to go, thats why you waited until kansas football mattered nationally before you tried to talk to the guy.

by notthatnoise on Nov 30, 2009 3:48 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

of course, i can’t prove anything, but anyone who reprints that water bottle story as a fine for one water bottle obviously isn’t too interested in the whole truth.

by notthatnoise on Nov 30, 2009 3:49 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

He is very interested in the truth, which is why he wrote that whole article about the mural story and called an Akron reporter to verify his information.

Why are you so obsessed about the water bottle? Many, many people have reported the same story. We don’t know the whole truth; I’m not sure why you’re so eager to believe everything Mangini says but nothing anyone else says about him.

by Buckeye Brad on Nov 30, 2009 5:09 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

This.

In fact I have done some searching. The only thing I found is Casserly saying that the fine was not just for a watter bottle. It was part of the reason for the fine, but it was taken.

The Browns themselves never came out and said that the fine was not for a water bottle. In fact when Mangini was asked about the water bottle fine he responded:

‘’I make no apologies for demanding a high level of personal conduct,’’

We will never know the full story until probably after the season someone will fess up, but until then it some sort of fine was handed down and a water bottle had something to do with it.

by Bernie19Kosar on Nov 30, 2009 5:27 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Mangini said on national TV in his interview with James Brown that the fine was related to ‘multiple incidents’:

When asked about the $1,700 fine of a player who reportedly stole a bottle of water during an away preseason game, Mangini said from the outside looking in, he would think it was over the top as well.

"This player had multiple incidents," said Mangini when asked why it was such a harsh penalty.

by golanbatrac on Nov 30, 2009 5:42 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Correct. It was part of the reason, just like I said before.

by Bernie19Kosar on Nov 30, 2009 6:01 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

The fact that we’re still discussing this water bottle spat says entirely too much about the pathetic nature of our season.

by RelapsingDawgCatcher on Dec 1, 2009 12:38 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Also true. I am starting to fear this upcoming draft since we have so many holes to fill. Anything is on the table.

by Roger Dorn on Dec 1, 2009 1:15 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Outside of Offensive Tackle, I think we could draft every position in the first round.

As much as I like Berry, I hope that we once again find a way to trade down.

by Bernie19Kosar on Dec 1, 2009 8:27 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I am assuming we won’t be able to trade down from a top 3 draft pick.

by Roger Dorn on Dec 1, 2009 10:53 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I think the only shot we have is if Jimmy Clausen goes ape after the season in his workouts.

I would love for San Fran to fall in love.

by Bernie19Kosar on Dec 2, 2009 3:08 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

As of right now, Clausen isn’t projected to be a top 5 or maybe even a top 10 pick. I heard Kiper say last week that right now he’s a mid-first round pick. Of course, that could change between now and then based on his workouts, but he’d have to be really impressive to convince a team to trade up to get him. Kiper still has Bradford as the top QB on the board even with his shoulder injury, and obviously his workout will do a lot to show teams how much he’s recovered from his surgery.

As Dorn said, I don’t see us trading out of a top 3 pick. It happens so rarely, and we were lucky last year that the Jets fell in love with Sanchez and were willing to move up, but I don’t see that happening again.

by Buckeye Brad on Dec 2, 2009 8:23 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I heard that has changed with Clausen as the #1 QB on Mel’s board and the #4 player overall. Obviously this is all subject to change, and I wish I could confirm that with a link or something.

we’ve been over this, lets not get into that argument again.

I’m eager to believe mangini because he knows what happened. everything else is second hand rumor. Why shouldn’t i believe mangini and casserly when they say the player had multiple incidents? I can’t believe you used the fact that multiple people reported the water bottle story as proof that it must be true. for an entire day every major news outlet said a little boy was in a weather balloon, that turned out to be true, right?

and this is like we discussed with mooncamping. he’s your crusade, this is mine.

by notthatnoise on Dec 2, 2009 10:39 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

and fine, maybe we don’t know the whole story on the water bottle, but the author reports it as fact, which it clearly isn’t. thats bad journalism.

by notthatnoise on Dec 2, 2009 10:44 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

and to my original point, not all that concerned with the truth.

by notthatnoise on Dec 2, 2009 10:44 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

First of all, I don’t have a crusade against anyone.

Secondly, I never said anything about “proof” that the water bottle story must be true. Never said anything like that at all. Then again, you’ve shown in the past that you will tell people what they think even if they say something different.

by Buckeye Brad on Dec 2, 2009 11:24 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I wouldn’t say he ripped in to Mangino — he was very careful to show both sides of the argument, going back and forth between points on both sides. He pointed out that Mangino probably said some bad things to him players but many other coaches have done the same thing, and if his team was winning then people wouldn’t care as much. He gave a little bit of Mangino’s history and his personal interaction with him, which was good information (I didn’t know Mangino was a former Penguin, like myself). I really don’t see how this would be considered a rip job.

by Buckeye Brad on Nov 30, 2009 5:14 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

I don’t know what classifies as a rip job, but calling for someone’s firing to me is at least a negative article on the person. As a Mizzou fan, I am hoping Mangino gets fired, because KU has historically been a joke in football before Mangino and it might be tough to get back to this level for them. This is my preference.

by Roger Dorn on Nov 30, 2009 6:10 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I think that Mangino is a very good coach.

His methods though could use some work. Anyone who takes Kansas to the Orange Bowl knows something about football. I bet he goes somewhere as an OC. Would it be asking too much to have him go to Ohio State and work under Tressel again?
