DBN: Help Wanted
Do you love writing about the Cleveland Browns? Would you like to have your content on the front page of Dawgs By Nature, as opposed to having it shoved off to the side as a FanPost or the 600th comment buried in a thread? Now is your chance.
Purpose
Dawgs By Nature is looking to add to our team of writers -- after all, I'm sure rufio is getting a little tired of being the site's only "minion." ;) This is not a sign of me leaving or anything like that, but rather allowing this site to reach its fullest potential. Sometimes I'm busy or unforeseen issues come up, as was seen a few weeks ago, and there isn't enough front-page content to keep things going. Most SB Nation sites have multiple writers too, so in that regard, I've been "late to the punch" in terms of soliciting help.
Qualifications
Here is what we'll be looking for in applicants:
- First off, you have to be interested because you want to do it as a hobby. This is not a paying position, although seeing the feedback you receive from your posts can sometimes be a worthwhile compensation in itself.
- You have to post regularly, and right now I'm going to set that standard at at least 2-3 times per week. That might some easy to do, but it requires a lot of dedication nonetheless. Having a sense of creativity always helps in coming up with new topics or regular (weekly) features.
- You must have good grammar and a good understanding of the English language. You don't need to be a masterful writer, but if there are punctuation and spelling errors every few sentences, it reflects more so on the credibility of the website than it does as a comment.
Contributing Ideas
Part of the writing process can also include ideas simple such as the following:
- Weekly summary of power rankings. On Tuesday's or Wednesday's, recap where all of the major media sites have the Browns listed in their power rankings.
- Morning link collections. Aggregate all of the morning's news from the newspapers and have them posted in the morning.
- Quotes from players or experts. Find a unique player quote from the Browns or a media member talking about the Browns and post it as a FanShot to the front page.
These are all ideas I've wanted to implement, but haven't had the time to do. Also, with more writers on board, the odds of a "BREAKING STORY" going straight to the front page at a sooner time are more likely.
Get Involved
If you're interested in applying, send me an email at pokorny@pfcritics.com. If you're a regular member, it'll be easier for me to decide if your writing style fits in with what we're looking for. In your email, share some of the features you might like to run on a weekly basis.
If you are NOT interested in applying but WOULD like to see more weekly features, list what features you'd like to see. Thanks, and GO BROWNS!!!

You make an extremely tempting offer Chris. After you made my uniform post front page material I feel like nothing could stop me.
…I may be interested.

gee, i wonder if moon will be interested…

I think Chris has standards.
And even then, I wouldn’t want our GM posting his thoughts all willy nilly…

my first thought too. wonder if he can handle both duties of minion and gm?

Chris, two to three posts a week all year long, or only during the preseason / season / postseason? Curious.
by RelapsingDawgCatcher on Nov 4, 2009 3:49 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
Primarily during the regular season. Finding news during the offseason is more sporadic, so the necessary adjustments could be made then.

Morning link collections. Aggregate all of the morning’s news from the newspapers and have them posted in the morning.
I’m not applying, but this feature could be quite useful to have throughout the year.

That is a really good idea. It would make DBN a one stop place for all the Browns news.
by Bernie19Kosar on Nov 4, 2009 4:46 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
If I am NEEDED, maybe. I don’t want to commit to doing posts 2-3 times a week though.
by TheRealSlimShady on Nov 4, 2009 5:25 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
I feel the same. I am new, but i try to get my research in before i post something. I don’t currently have NFL Sunday ticket so i can’t watch the games. Background info, I an in the Air Force and live in Cali. All i hear about is how bad the Raiders are, and Russell. They have nothing to complain about compared to the Browns.
by holmes213 on Nov 4, 2009 6:03 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I thought that maybe a look around the NFL blurb once a week.
Like a quick look to see what other teams are up too, what players are hot, etc.

If you guys have more suggestions, keep them coming.
I’ve received a lot more emails than I thought I’d get with people volunteering their assistance, which is fantastic news. Now I have to go through the candidates and determine who and how many people I can try to bring on board without having too much. If you aren’t chosen, please don’t take it personally.

What is your eta for sending conformation emails?
by SpecialBrownie on Nov 4, 2009 9:40 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
In terms of saying “I received your email,” I probably won’t say that.
I want to give at least another day or two for interested people to “apply.” It wouldn’t be fair for someone to lose out on the opportunity just because they happened to not check out this post today. Hopefully I can have an answer to who will be given the opportunities by Friday or Saturday; I might consult with rufio and a few other people privately for their opinions too.

Here are some ideas:
1. discussion of weekly opponent (other than the matchup)
- how their season is going
- how their week is going
- what the game means to them
- what their fans are saying
2. Summary of important notes from Browns press conferences
3. A pro-Browns interpretation of team news (to cut through the media bias)
4. An article highlighting the games to watch this week (or the others televised in the cleveland viewing area)
5. Weekly recap of developments around the AFC North including results of games
by Bumblyjack on Nov 4, 2009 10:03 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
I like that number 1. Maybe on Wed or something, have a quick look at the upcoming opponent.

Chris does have a post every week showing the games which will be broadcast in the Cleveland area every Sunday, along with a link to the distribution maps for the entire country.

You don´t need more writers, you need more posts by participants.
But as long as you keep discouraging creative content and encouraging ignorance, it will just be more humdrum.
I checked the favorite posts function, and it said my post from yesterday: “Erie Dawgs (COPYRIGHT)” was already amongst the weeks favorites, before you not hid it, like you announced magnanimously, but erased it.
You are a writer, not a censor.
I don´t trust you to make an unbiased decision regarding another writer.
What we need is a forum, not an opinion regurgitating machine like you maintain here.

i’d like to volunteer to do a weekly summary of mooncamping’s insane ramblings that mixes his words, personal commentary, and some analytical comparisons between Chris and various other evil historical figures.
For example: Chris’s historical counterpart of the week: Fidel Castro; then i’ll go into how Chris practices Castroesque oppressive censorship.

There was nothing creative about your Erie Dawgs post, it was just a stilly suggestion to change the team’s name which will obviously never happen. We want actual football discussion here. Also, what are you talking about when you said that your post was a “favorite”? Nobody recommended the post or made any comments supporting it. You’ve got to stop making things up whenever it supports your views.
There are plenty of other Browns forums if you want to post crazy, off-topic ramblings. If you don’t like it here then find one of those places.
by Buckeye Brad on Nov 5, 2009 9:18 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I imagine the favorite designation goes out to posts being read the most, not recommended, and is probably automatic, so not susceptible to your faultiness in discerning what interests the fans.
Once again you shine the glaring spotlight to distract from your awful contributions as, “egads!”, moderator of this pretty little opinionator space.
by mooncamping on Nov 5, 2009 9:38 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
You have the most opinions of anyone here.
While they make be EXTREMELY absurd, nothing you say has any factual backgorund and that, in turn, designates what you say as opinion.
Good job hypocrite.
by SpecialBrownie on Nov 5, 2009 9:47 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
You may try being intelligent for once, rather than just acting like it.

yeah, the big debate around here for some time has been over who is more insightful, mooncamping or buckeye brad? just poll all of the regulars and see how close the race is right now.
by Dawg Nuts on Nov 5, 2009 9:58 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
The people who read this blog appreciate the contributions of Chris and the other people who post frequently. Once again, if you don’t like it here there are plenty of other Browns forums where you can spout your made-up “facts” and get upset when nobody takes you seriously.
by Buckeye Brad on Nov 5, 2009 10:09 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
For a moderator you are not at all moderate.
Being the moderator, you´re pretty insulting sometimes.
Makes one question your qualification to do a good job around here.

Usually the opposite of what you say it true, so I’ll judge your comments based on this assumption:
-You don´t need more writers, you need more posts by participants. I explained the posts by participants part, so I do need more writers. Check.
-But as long as you keep discouraging creative content and encouraging ignorance, it will just be more humdrum. I’m encouraging valid content instead of make-believe content. Check.
-I checked the favorite posts function, and it said my post from yesterday: "Erie Dawgs (COPYRIGHT)" was already amongst the weeks favorites, before you not hid it, like you announced magnanimously, but erased it. I hid the post; I did not erase it. Check. There is no favorite posts function, and if there was, that post certainly wouldn’t be there. Check.
-You are a writer, not a censor. This was actually a claim that you’re trying to say I should be a writer, but I’m acting like a censor. Regardless, Check.
-I don´t trust you to make an unbiased decision regarding another writer. If you’re asking if I’d have a bias in choosing between someone like you or anybody else, then I would have a bias. However, regarding everyone else, it will be an unbiased (although not random) decision. Check.
-What we need is a forum, not an opinion regurgitating machine like you maintain here. What we need is what we have. Check.

I’d like to see an article written that questions the popular move. For example, defending the firing of Kokinis, defending DA starting after the bye, etc.
It could be called “Modell’s Advocate”.

by Buckeye Brad on Nov 5, 2009 10:59 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
It’s something I’d love to do myself, but at this time I cannot commit to even one article a week.
Ideally, it would be a weekly feature that focuses on a recent personnel move by either the front office or coaching staff, a controversial play call made in the previous game, or maybe a statement made about the Browns by an opposing player or MSM writer. If a particular week provided none of those, I’m sure a basic premise could be looked at (maybe even defending an unpopular viewpoint expressed in the fanposts here on DBN).
You are reading my signature.
by rolub on Nov 5, 2009 11:10 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
This is a great idea, and would be really interesting. It would have to be better than 12 weeks of arguing about whether DA’s ability to throw long but not complete anything is more desirable than BQ’s inability to throw more than 5 yards but actually complete a pass now and then.
by drjeo on Nov 5, 2009 11:17 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I might be able to do something like that if it’s just once a week. I’m too busy now to commit to anything more than that. But drjeo is right, that would be better than arguing over which QB is worse for the rest of the season.
