We all knew this to be true, really. The hit on Daven Holly just confirmed what we all knew to be true to begin with. Remember this next time Steelers fans come over here and defend Hines Ward as being anything other than a cheapshotting punk. His peers, the NFL players, have spoken.

Hines Ward has always been a cheap shot artist.

Not to mention douchebag.

Absolutely agree.

In addition, why is he touted by many to be such an good blocking WR? The “big” blocks he lays involve running full speed and throwing his body head first into a defender that isn’t even looking. No skill necessary, just a reckless abandon and asshole personality with no regard for sportsmanship or fairness.

If he were a Brown, we’d love him.

by golanbatrac on Nov 6, 2009 10:16 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

That doesn’t change the fact that if he still played dirty here than he’d still play dirty here.

If he were a Brown, Pittsburgh’d hate him.

I don’t what you’re trying to prove.

by Simmsinns on Nov 6, 2009 12:15 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

You’re being biased.

That’s what he’s saying.

by SpecialBrownie on Nov 6, 2009 1:04 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I’d like him because he’s capable of leading the league in receiving yards. I’d dislike his dirty play. How is that being biased?

by Simmsinns on Nov 6, 2009 3:25 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I would never defend a dirty player. So no, I wouldn’t.

Guys that try and hurt players should get zero respect.

Hence, I have no respect for Ward. That fact that he is a Steeler, just makes him that much easier to hate him.

by Bernie19Kosar on Nov 8, 2009 3:34 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

He also locks up receivers and drives them 5 yards off the los on run plays and once leveled Ray Lewis coming straight at him.

In case you haven’t noticed though, you can’t block a guy you’re running parallel with face to face. It doesn’t work unless the defender agrees to turn and face you.

Hines Ward hits people. He tries to do it legally, but if he can’t, he settles for hitting them. He especially likes jacking up loud mouthed Ravens, which I can get behind anyone doing.

Seeing Bart Scott whine and cry about Hines hitting him was great after all the crap he spewed about killing people and taking their heads off. The hit on Rivers was unfortunate, but many players get hit like that and don’t break their jaw. There’s no way Hines was like “If I hit him hard here his jaw will break.” If it was that easy there’d be a ton more players out with broken jaws.

by Phantaskippy on Nov 10, 2009 10:38 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Notice I’m not saying Hines isn’t dirty, my defense is that Football is by nature a rough game, and LB’s are among the roughest out there. They love lighting up WR’s that are in the air and defenseless, but when someone does something similar to them they cry about it? That’s ridiculous.

by Phantaskippy on Nov 10, 2009 10:40 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Agreed, and another factor is that most of the time his blindsiding cheap shots have NO impact on that particular play. Take this “highlight” reel for example. The only block that even might have made a difference in the outcome of the play is the hit on Nick Ferguson at 1:17. The rest are just disgusting intent to injure, helmet to helmet, blows laid on defender that have no idea it’s coming.

And Phantaskippy, I’ll have you know, a hit on a defenseless receiver (helmet to helmet, like 90% of Wards cheapshots) are illegal. If they don’t flag the player, they can fine them.

And on the Rivers hit, was he thinking “his jaw will break” probably not, but I have no doubt that he was happy about it. The way he presents himself and talks about the hits makes me think he runs around the field thinking: “Injure them before they because they’d injure me.”

just a reckless abandon and asshole personality with no regard for sportsmanship or fairness.

by Simmsinns on Nov 11, 2009 1:00 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Helmet to Helmet hits are illegal, just like late hits, roughing the kicker and Holding.

People get hurt on cut blocks and shots to the knees, they get hurt on face masking penalties. I’m not arguing what is or isn’t legal, I’m saying penalties happen because people break the rules, and people get hurt that way too.

We don’t demonize O-lineman for cut blocking, we don’t demonize Ryan CLark like we do Hines, and look at his hits. And that’s just on the Steelers. The Ravens hit helmet to helmet all the time. Denver O-line used to cut block everyone on the planet. Brett Favre goes after peoples knees. It’s all over the league. Hines Ward plays dirty, so do a lot of other people.

It’s how the game is. Mike Tomlin has said in Football the most violent team wins, look back it’s true more than it isn’t.

And for those blocks not having impact on the play, the late hits I’ll agree with, Hines loves giving people something to think about out there, make them keep track of where he is. Is that dirty, heck yeah. But it is also a good football strategy. One more thing to think about. Winners do whatever it takes to win, we cheer that all the time in this society, so whatever it takes to win. Hines Ward wins. He isn’t Randy Moss, he can’t win with just his natural ability, so he finds other ways to win.

I’m not going to say Hines isn’t dirty. After the Ed Reed hit he taunted the Ravens, until he saw Reed was hurt, then he was concerned about him. Hines Ward wants to hurt people like every good hard-hitting LB or Safety wants to hurt people. No one wants to end someone’s career, they want to knock them out of the game. It’s the nature of the beast.

by Phantaskippy on Nov 11, 2009 4:58 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Mike Tomlin has said in Football the most violent team wins, look back it’s true more than it isn’t.

Violent is not the same as dirty. Everyone likes good, clean, hard football. No one likes it when a guy blindsides people and then dances and pumps his fist.

The thing about it is, I like every other aspect of Wards game. I saw him play every position under the sun at UGA. I then watched as he turned himself into a very good WR. He makes big catches at big times. Too bad he ruins all of that by being the dirtest cheapshot artist in the NFL.

Funny you lambast WARD....

When a totally inconsequential player like Brady Quinn can take out Pro-Bowl caliber Terrel Suggs. Say what you will about Hines Ward but at least he will be remembered in this league for more than being an over-hyped Notre Dame player. Hines Ward plays hard, sometimes violent, but not STUPID. Has he been suspended for hitting P. Rivers & breaking his jaw? NO? Well then the NFL didn’t think it was “dirty” it was a flag & a fine. He is S.B.MVP/Pro bowl talent. Brady Quinn is Ryan Leaf material, nothing but a blip on the radar. So I take umbrage at your Ward bashing! At least he CAN PLAY.

Heinz Ward broke Phillip Rivers jaw?

by golanbatrac on Nov 18, 2009 6:27 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Your beef is not with me. Your beef is with the rest of the NFL players, who voted him the dirtiest player. His peers. Brady Quinn went to make a tackle and hit the wrong guy. Hines Ward aims for peoples heads.

Want out of Cleveland? Easy - mess with LeBron's entourage.

by woodsmeister on Nov 18, 2009 10:41 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

My "BEEF" Is w the comment not you...

Also being voted on by our peers is pretty meaningless, no? If it’s noyt meaningless which other “votes” have tey taken? Who-cares & Who-cares? Sorry if this seems to rude. Are you are STUPID enough to call Quinn’s CHOP BLOCK an accident? There is a TERM for the exact technique he used. It isn’t accident. It wasn’t a 15 yard accident. It was a Knee killing CHOP BLOCK! Does Hines Ward CHOP BLOCK? Or does he go high? Usually (NOT ALWAYS) Legal.

by Fargo2Detroit on Nov 19, 2009 4:31 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Huge difference between a chop block an attempted tackle. A chop block is when your team has possession of the ball and you are attempting to prevent a defender from making the play. What Quinn did was an attempted tackle, which I grant was awkward, but the attempt was to dive at the opposing player WITH the football, and make the play.

by Roger Dorn on Nov 19, 2009 8:57 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Yahoo reported it as a Chop Block-Not me &

as this “blog” is basically attached to yahoo, I thought MAYBE, just MAYBE, I wasn’t the only one who goes to YAHOO SPORTS.

Sports Illustrated has polled NFL players and asked them the dirtiest player in the league for several years now. Rodney Harrison, the only player who has been consistently as dirty or dirtier than Hines Ward has typically won, but he’s retired now, and now it’s Hines Ward’s turn for the recognition he so richly deserves.

As to the meaninglessness of being voted on by one’s peers, let me ask you this: who knows the differences between clean play and dirty play better than then players themselves?

Your beef with Quinn’s attempted tackle is petty at best. He was trying to tackle the ballcarrier. Suggs stepped in his way and he hit Suggs instead. End of story. There was no intent to injure, and, in fact, has been fined for the incident.

Quinn’s play has nothing to do with the fact that Hines Ward is a cheapshotting, headhunting thug, who hits players in the head when they’re not looking and then stands over them and laughs and poses. If you can’t see the difference, then you are being intentionally blind and obtuse.

Oh, and lose the capital letters. We are not impressed.

JUST FOR YOU I WILL (-:

Let me ask you this, would a broken jaw be harder to rehab from or a blown out knee or TWO? Oops, there I go trying to impress people. Brady Quinn could have ended Suggs career… by going LOW. Damn it, again? If H. Ward would have blown out P. Rivers knees, would he be the Q.B. he is today? Who knows? Suggs ACL Is as close to blown out as can be without actually tearing/disconnecting the ligaments. If my CAPITILIZATION BOTHERS YOU, Your dangling participels bother me. Wow. The grammar nazi is a blogger! The irony.

The issue here in this thread is whether Hines Ward is an intentionally dirty player. He is – his peers have spoken. If you want to keep bitching about Brady Quinn, start another thread.

Ward is exponentially more dirty than Brady Quinn will ever be. Get over it.

Quote from ESPN the Mag. (Stuart Scott p. 14 Nov. 30 09)

When asked “Is H. Ward is the NFL’s dirtiest player?” R. Harrison says “no”, “the Titans, including Kevin Mawae deserve their bad rep.” Who’s right, Stu? “Personally, I don’t think Ward is dirty at all. He’s a fierce blocker, he’s intense, he hits hard. He’s the type of player I’d like to play with and against. Kevin is a crafty veteran who knows a lot of different ways to handle defenses. Being dirty is trying to hurt other players. That doesn’t fit either one of these guys.” He gets paid to analyze football, and you?

by Fargo2Detroit on Nov 20, 2009 6:56 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

That’s one opinion. Sports Illustrated asked almost 300 current players and they said Ward is dirty.

Hines Ward hit Bengals linebacker Keith Rivers and broke his jaw. Rivers is one of a long list of players whom Ward has injured dramatically on blindside hits, including Ed Reed and Daven Holly. To the best of my knowledge, Hines Ward has never hit Philip Rivers, since both of them play on offense.

Oops.

Thank you. Btw Troy Brown has played Defense. I believe Randy Moss has a interception this year. To the best of my knowledge they play(ed) offense. My bad. A L.B. getting hit by an undersized Wr? Oh, well…

love it, just wish he would have broke a cleveland brownies jaw before the bogus hines ward rule…. but, whos to say he doesnt do it anyways 15 yards and a fine is worth it, not like that 15 yards will hurt us against the browns

It’s a good thing they didn’t include women’s collegiate soccer in the poll. Ward would have been number two.

If I remember correctly, she did more than just that.

She kicked at least two people in the face and shoved four others straight into the dirt.

And she was never flagged once.

That was after the 2004 loss where he thought Jerome was gone. Bettis had given a speech they all thought was his goodbye speech. Then Bettis Improved and Hines got a SB MVP to get Bettis a ring.

If you want to see him not smiling, look up his face after that fumble earlier this year, he was ticked then.
