You’re gonna need to offer something more than a “please”. A forfeit for Shaun Rogers or the Browns’ 2010 first round pick.

After Cromartie’s breakout rookie year, he has struggled through some ups and downs. How does he look this season and do you see him as an elite corner still?
Do you regret the Chargers not re-signing Burner Turner with the benefit of hindsight?
Despite Schottenheimer’s playoff history, didn’t you feel more comfortable with him on the sideline than Norv?

After Cromartie’s breakout rookie year, he has struggled through some ups and downs. How does he look this season and do you see him as an elite corner still?
I’ll start by saying this is Cro’s 3rd year and he played all of last year injured after breaking his hip in week 1. Let’s see you try to play CB with a broken hip.
Having said that, Cro started off 2009 slow and has since admitted that he was depending on his talent and not putting in the work during the week on the practice field. He dedicated himself to giving 100% during practice in Week 4 and has been one of the league’s best corners since then. A shutdown corner for sure.
Charger fans have forgotten about him for long spurts of time this season, but not because he’s been playing poorly. It’s because QBs just won’t throw at him. Quentin Jammer doesn’t get thrown on much either. After watching a few Chargers games you start wondering why TEs and RBs catch so many passes against them. Jammer and Cromartie being among the league’s best is why.
Do you regret the Chargers not re-signing Burner Turner with the benefit of hindsight?
Yes and no. Obviously, if they could swap one for the other right now they would. Anybody would. However, it was still the right call at the time. Tomlinson was coming off of a Pro Bowl season where he had about 2,000 yards from scrimmage and 18 TDs. It was a stereotypical year from LT in his prime. There was no reason to believe he would regress so quickly.
At the same time, everybody knew what Turner would become. He had strength, speed and runs smart. But he doesn’t fit the Chargers’ offense nearly as well as LT (because Turner can’t catch the ball) and the Chargers couldn’t afford to have the two highest paid RBs on the same roster. Nobody can.
Nobody disagreed with picking LT at the time. It was the right thing to do.
Despite Schottenheimer’s playoff history, didn’t you feel more comfortable with him on the sideline than Norv?
No. Not at all. First off, Marty was absolutely terrible with managing the clock. There’s a legitimate reason why “The Drive” happened against one of his teams. There’s a reason his teams didn’t have a ton of comeback wins. Marty is a fantastic motivator and has an eye for talent, but he is not a great coach.
Personnel gets you a wins during the season. Coaching gets you wins in the postseason. I say that a lot. When it got to playoff time, Marty’s weaknesses were revealed and no matter how good his team’s regular season record was (14-2 was against a ridiculously weak schedule, by the way), he never stood a chance at winning the game.
Norv Turner is a much better coach. He may run a weak camp and it may lead to slow starts during the season, but the Chargers are undefeated in December under him and damn good in November and January (during the playoffs). No other coach has had as much playoff success in the past two seasons without winning a Super Bowl.
Norv has been progress for the Chargers. Every Super Bowl is based at least a little in luck. The Chargers have had everything but the luck these past two years. In 2007, they played the undefeated Patriots and nearly won the game even though Rivers played with a torn ACL, LT played less than a quarter and Gates’ toe was just about falling off. In 2008, they played a relatively competitive game against the Steelers even though they only got 15 yards rushing as a team (which was because they had to start Sproles).
The hiring of Norv Turner after the 14-2 season sent a clear message. Regular season success means nothing. Playoff success means everything. Norv has delivered that. He also has the best winning percentage of any Chargers coach. He’s been a big improvement over Marty.

Our sporting culture does not allow for the possibility of a forfeiture, sorry.
What´s Shaun Rogers worth to you? Who else would you take off our hands?

What´s Shaun Rogers worth to you?
He was worth more before he broke his leg, actually. Rogers doesn’t strike me as somebody who is going to do what it takes to stay in shape while doing the rehab. Also, he’s getting up there in age. I’d be wiling to part with a 3rd rounder for him. A 2nd rounder if he was willing to negotiate a cheaper salary.
Who else would you take off our hands?
If the Chargers didn’t have Rivers and Volek, I’d gladly take Brady Quinn. I think he’s a hell of a ballplayer. James Davis wouldn’t be turned away, but my selection would have to be the best player on the Browns….Joe Thomas. Even if I like Marcus McNeill just as much, if one of them would move over to RT it’d immediately become the most dominating offensive line in the NFL.

Yes
Elam fits our system and has been a great player for at least two seasons now. He would look great next to Weddle. With that being said, I like how Kevin Ellison and Paul Oliver are progressing as Safety “projects” and I think Thomas is the most dominating player on Cleveland.

How badly do you think the Chargers are looking at this game as a cakewalk?
by RelapsingDawgCatcher on Dec 1, 2009 12:50 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
When Norv Turner was asked what he was worried about this week in Cleveland, he responded with “The weather”.
I’ll say this. This team has not been susceptible to trap games under Norv. Even if they come out flat against a lesser opponent, their very powerful offense can just turn on the afterburners and lead the team to victory that way.
It’s going to look worse than it is because the Chargers have some crucial injuries. Eric Weddle (arguably the D’s MVP) and Shawne Merriman (who I’m sure you’re familiar with) will both be out for the game. Jon Runyan (who signed a week ago) and Nick Hardwick (who last played in Week 1) are expected to get some time on the offensive line.
So while the Chargers are definitely looking at this game almost as if it’s a bye week, that’s not something I’m really worried about.

Is Merriman done?
Do you, like most NFL fans, view Phillip Rivers as being an ass? He is turned into a great QB, but he really shows immaturity a lot.
Can we have Vincent Jackson?
Do any Charger fans think like I do, that this is LT’s last season?
If you could do it all over again, Rivers or Brees?
by Bernie19Kosar on Dec 1, 2009 6:19 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
Is Merriman done?
Nope. Not even close. After missing an entire season he’s had a difficult time staying 100% healthy, but he’s back to being a dominating player again. He probably won’t play against Cleveland because he has an injured foot that needs rest.
Do you, like most NFL fans, view Phillip Rivers as being an ass? He is turned into a great QB, but he really shows immaturity a lot.
Nope, and I disagree 100%. Rivers has had two incidents of “immaturity”. One was when he waved goodbye to Jay Cutler at the end of a blowout along with Shaun Phillips, the other is a reported instance where he was talking trash to Colts fans during the end of a playoff game that he was knocked out of. Both of which, in my opinion, were just him having some fun along with his teammates. When asked about it, he basically said “I didn’t mean to cause attention, I was just talking trash.” Why can every other player in the league get away with it except Rivers?
Off the field, Rivers couldn’t be more mature and less of an ass. He spends his time at home raising his three kids with his wife (married at 19). He drives a minivan. See or listen to any of his interviews and you’ll get the sense that Rivers is just a normal guy.
Also, he made it a point to say, after those instances (which both occurred in 2007) that he would hold back from trash-talking because he didn’t want to cause any problems for his teammates. It has been over a season and a half without incident since.
So please, if you want to keep this perception, explain to me how Rivers shows his immaturity “a lot”.
Can we have Vincent Jackson?
Nope. He’s possibly the best WR in the league and the Chargers deserve to have him, after drafting him from a D-II college and giving him the help he needed to develop into a legitimate WR.
Do any Charger fans think like I do, that this is LT’s last season?
The sentiment going around is that he’ll retire if the Chargers win the Super Bowl. If they don’t, I could see him play for another year or two somewhere else. The rarest possibility is probably LT coming back to the Chargers in 2010.
If you could do it all over again, Rivers or Brees?
Rivers. A thousand times Rivers. Since Brees started 4 years in San Diego and Rivers is finishing up his 4th year as starter, let’s do quick comparison of those 4 seasons….
Rivers – 51-18 record, 62.7% comp., 13,487 yds, 96 TDs, 41 Int, 7.7 yards per attempt
Brees – 30-28 record, 62.2% comp., 12,127 yds, 79 TDs, 53 Int, 7 yards per attempt
Which one of those QBs would you rather have? Not only did everyone know that Rivers had the ability to be much better than Brees, but he was younger, stronger, taller and tougher. Not only that, but Brees’ fate was sealed when he injured his throwing shoulder badly enough to need surgery in the last game before he hit free agency. The Chargers offered him a fair deal, the same one he got from New Orleans, but he left because he didn’t want to compete with Philip.
It was absolutely the right move and Rivers is on pace to be a better QB than Brees for his career.

It was absolutely the right decision at the time to go with Rivers, but I think you overstate your case a little.
Although Rivers had a better first four years, you can’t really expect Rivers next four years to be any where close to Brees the last 4. I mean, I’m really high on Rivers, but Brees has become the most accurate passer I have ever seen. And its not particularly close.

I don’t understand that sentiment at all. “I know player B was better than player A during the beginning of their careers, but you can’t expect player B to be any where close to player A.” Yes you can! Am I saying I predict Rivers will be as good or better than Brees when you compare their careers? No. I mean, I personally think it will happen but I don’t guarantee it will happen. However, I do think that Rivers will at least be able to be “close” to the level Brees is at now. Hell, I think he’s close right now.

QB progression is a bit more difficult to predict than you imply, and so I think Ryan’s point stands. Brees absolutely exploded into greatness after struggling for a while. There’s no guarantee at all that Rivers will reach the ceiling that Brees is currently enjoying.
That said, I’ve always been a Rivers fan (at least as far as performance goes), I think he will be very good for a long time, and I think the Chargers made the smart call on QB even despite Brees’ success. I wish one of our FOs showed that kind of vision.
by danvail on Dec 2, 2009 1:02 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
And to clearly state, the difference between Brees and Rivers right now is not at all huge.
by danvail on Dec 2, 2009 1:05 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Exactly
The funny thing is, as amazing as Brees is right now, I keep expecting him to fail. Not that I want him to, but according to NFL history he shouldn’t be able to do what he’s doing. Name another 6’ pocket-passer that has nearly the same amount of success he’s had.
His Chargers career was kindof a roller-coaster. People always try to act like picking Rivers over Brees was a mistake. In addition to all of my reasons above, you have to remember that it was Brees’ terrible play in 2003 that forced the Chargers to use their top pick on a QB. If he had been this consistently good with the Chargers, they wouldn’t have gotten rid of him.

Tarkenton was hardly a pocket-passer. I’ll give you Theisman, even though he had more bad years than good ones.
Still, logic dictates that if you want a star QB you have to look for one that’s at least 6’2" or taller. 6’5" is the optimum height. The closer you can come to the “prototypical” NFL QB, the less weaknesses defenses can usually find in your game. Rivers is much closer to that than Brees.

I don’t understand this. Wasn’t the choice for SD between the second 4 years of Brees’ career or the first 4 years of Rivers career? As in, one of the advantages of keeping Brees is that you wouldn’t have to go through the early years. Your analysis is proper for evaluating them on their careers as a whole.
Anyway, not that it matters, you’re winning in either case.
by dgcambridge on Dec 3, 2009 11:54 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
You're right, but....
They had no idea what the second 4 years of Brees’ career would be like, after he went through major surgery on his right shoulder that offseason. He was already fairly weak-armed So you were really choosing between the potential of the kid, or the potential health of the guy who has played OK.

Follow up, in case you ask:
ABSOLUTELY BETTER: Larry Fitz, Andre Johnson, Reggie Wayne, Randy Moss,
Most likely better: Steve Smith (Car), Brandon Marshall, Roddy White, Calvin Johnson, Anquan Boldin, Chad Ochocinco, Marques Colston,
Probably better: Wes Welker, T.J. Housh, Hines Ward…

I think that Steve Smith is in the catagory below where you have him. Same for Boldin. I do think that Vincent Jackson is in the middle class there.

Um… yeah sure, Sidney Rice is the best WR in the league and Andre Johnson (a WR which a sane person could make a real argument for being the best) is like 30th. Ha!
You can’t honestly use that list to judging a WRs abilities, can you? I mean the list discredits itself based on the position of some players. Unless of course they don’t make the claim, here are the best 80 WRs in order, in which case, why would you?
Basically what I’m saying is twelve weeks of “Defense-adjusted Yards Above Replacement” is a terrible way to rank WRs overall skill/ability. Well, and that Vincent Jackson isn’t close to being the best WR. He’s really good, but there are at least 5 guys that are clearly better.
by Simmsinns on Dec 2, 2009 9:16 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I’d say there are a (very small) handful of guys more talented than Vincent Jackson. But DYAR is a very good measure of who has been the most productive this year. Not who has more potential, talent or skill. DVOA takes things like playing time and injuries out of it a little bit. Jackson is #2 in that measure.
Now, what FO’s WR stats struggle with is normalizing for the quality of the QB.
Still, do you know many other sub 4.4 runners that are 6’5 230?
P.S. How awesome is that 2005 draft for the Chargers? Merriman, Castillo, Jackson, Sproles, and their starting Center- Mruckowski.

So please, if you want to keep this perception, explain to me how Rivers shows his immaturity "a lot".
I guess it is from the outside looking in. Earlier this season he was fined for taunting. What other QB has ever been fined for taunting?
the other is a reported instance where he was talking trash to Colts fans during the end of a playoff game that he was knocked out of. Both of which, in my opinion, were just him having some fun along with his teammates.
How is the Colts instance reported? Here is video of it happening (advance to 6:15 on video). Would you ever see Manning, Brees or Brady going after fans?
I think that a QB should held to a higher standard. They are the coach on the field and the leader of the offense. For him to be trading insults with fans is beneath a QB and a professional athlete. That being said, Rivers is a very talented QB that has a knack of big plays at the right time. He is a great QB in the NFL but I personally think the guy is a douchebag on the field.
I am not trying to argue here. I know that a guy having your favorite teams jersey on his back really has a major say in what you think about a guy. For myself, I hated K2 when he was at Miami. I thought he was an arrogant, self centered ass. When the Browns drafted him, I saw the fact that he played through injury, and was one of the most reliable players we have had in quite sometime. Trust me, if Rivers was a Brown and he was winning games at the same clip he was in SD, I would probably have a jersey of his.
by Bernie19Kosar on Dec 2, 2009 8:14 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I hadn’t seen that video but it doesn’t really change the fact that it happened over 2 years ago.
The taunting fine this year was silly and had more to do with reputation. In week 1, the Raiders were jumping at the knees of Rivers and the offensive linemen even when the plays were being blown dead for false starts. Nick Hardwick had his ankle broken on play that was blown dead because he wasn’t looking, and two plays later somebody dove at Rivers knee again on another dead play. Rivers leaned down and said something to the effect of “Knock it off with the cheap shots!” and was flagged and fined. I agree with his actions whole-heartedly.

Later in the third quarter, having already lost Hardwick on a similar play, Rivers saw Raiders tackle Gerard Warren continue charging toward him after a timeout had been called. As Warren crawled toward him, Rivers leaned down and yelled at him and then flicked the ball to the ground near Scott.
"We lost Nick on a play that was whistled dead," Rivers said. " . . . I’m about to get rolled up on. I lost my mouthpiece on the play, and as I was leaning down to get it, I yelled, ‘Stop on the whistle.’Then I threw the ball. I wasn’t throwing at him. I understand what it looked like, but I was by no means taunting him."
I’m still looking for it, but I remember this being confirmed by Richard Seymour a day or two later (he wasn’t the one on the ground, but he was right there to hear it).

My search shows Merriman, Jackson and Sproles all as unrestricted free agents next year. You already mentioned that you do not believe that LT will be a Charger next year (though he is not an UFA). Assign a likelihood that they will be Chargers next year to all the free agents above with 100% being a sure thing. Also, if LT is not going to be a Charger how do you see this happening? A trade? Is he under contract?

They’re all UFA’s, along with a few other big names (like LT Marcus McNeill) if a new CBA is in place, which there won’t be. Without it, Sproles is the only UFA. So, let’s run both scenarios….
without CBA:
Merriman – 100%
Jackson – 100%
McNeill – 100%
Sproles – 50%
with CBA:
Merriman – 50%
Jackson – 95%
McNeill – 90%
Sproles – 50%
I think LT will either be traded or released in the offseason. He is under contract for one more season, for not a lot of money. However, as a 10 and 6 guy, he reserves the right to turn down any trade. I think the likeliest scenario is retirement.

I cannot imagine any team trading for LT at this point.

You forgot that the Raiders are still an NFL team.

I think there are a lot of teams that would love to trade for LT (the Browns, for one), just to have the experience, the good PR and to have a winner/leader in the locker room. Not to mention, he would probably be a good backup RB.
The problem is, in his situation he can turn down any trade that involves him. I don’t think he’d want to go anywhere that didn’t have a shot at a title immediately, and he has a history of hating Belichick. I don’t think the Colts or Steelers would want to touch him, and the Saints and Vikings seem set at RB. Philadelphia would be an interesting possibility, but I don’t know that Reid would want him.

I think Merriman is coming back to Maryland next season… if there is a CBA in place.

Close. He's hinted at going to Washington on Twitter.
Imagine that guy playing across from Orakpo.

Well looks like the Chargers arent the biggest draw as the game is going to be blacked out locally… It has been so long, how does that affect the double header?
