Better Know the Jacksonville Jaguars: Ask Big Cat Country

Hey Browns fans

I'm John, Editor-In-Chief of SBN's Jaguar site, Big Cat Country. It seems to be perfect weather for roasting marsh mellows over the Cuyahoga when the Jaguars travel to Cleveland on Sunday. While the Jags still have a slight chance to make the playoffs, that'll more than likely be reduced to playing out the string by half time. If you have any questions about the Jags in general or about Sundays game, hit me up. Just don't throw beer bottles or hit me in the eye with a flag, please.

Is the football atmosphere in city of Jacksonville really as bad as they make it sound?

by Simmsinns on Dec 28, 2009 10:58 PM EST reply actions

Ah hell, forgot my usual FAQs

But, in some ways yes, and in some ways no.

The Jaguars attendance was, more the most part, pathetic. That being said, we did sellout the last two home games so it gives hope. Drafting Tim Tebow sure as hell isn’t the answer. Jacksonville has the 2nd highest unemployment rate in the NFL, combined with a team that was expected to be mediocre at best cause a lot of the ticket problems.

That all being said, the every Jags game shown in J-ville out drew the Gators, Seminoles, and Bulldogs (3 big college teams) combined so there is clearly a fanbase. We outdrew the Steelers every year before this year, so let us get back on our feet. The ESPN talking heads needed a story and we provided an easy target.

Christian Ponder in 2011! Bring him home Wayne, he can actually play QB in the NFL

I have watched a lot of Jags football this season (I own MJD in my league).

1. Am I nuts or does it seem that the Jags just go away from the run a lot? Sunday it was a 7-0 game after 1 quarter, MJD had 45 yards. They go away from the run, and the Jags get drilled. Does this bother Jags fans as much as it bothers MJD owners?

2. David Garrard sucks right?

3. Has Rasheen Mathis any good anymore?

4. How have the rookie tackles worked out?

by Bernie19Kosar on Dec 28, 2009 11:35 PM EST reply actions

Well

1. Dirk Koetter the OC is a pass happy guy; sometimes he had a very nice plan; but sometimes he get obsessed with the pass. Or a run(when it’s not working specially in 3rd-4th &1… Sometimes he raises our eyebrows; but sometimes he gets it-just like the Jaguars in 2009…

2. NO he is inconsistent; but we now that. Other then that he is durable QB (I think half of the starting QBs in the NFL would been on IR with the hits he get all year long since last year….
We need a QB drafted because of his age he will be 32 before the next season starts. ANd before you ask NO it will be no TIM TEBOW forget it; our GM hates the idea-luclky!

3. Well he was injured most of the time; but he can play still very good. he’s pick against the Jets in the 1st play of the gme was a beauty(Tom Brady praised it last week) He is playing injured thought these days.

4. Monroe outplayed Dwight Freeney aginst the Colts on TNF (evidence: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-M8elXjFLFU&feature=player_embedded) Britton is Ok but hew and Eugene must still learn the game more. They will be okay…

Oh my bad

He will be 32 before the next season starts; And before you ask No it will be not Tim Tebow(The part that was crossed.)

1. It bothers me simply because MJD is the best player on the field and Garrard makes too many mistakes. I feel much safer when the Jaguars commit to the run and force it down opposing defenses’ throats.

2. He is far too inconsistent for my taste.

3. Rashean is still easily the best corner on our team. The big stats that opposing QBs are putting up are due to a truly pathetic pass rush that allows a QB to sit in the pocket for 3 or 4 seconds. I don’t care who you have in the secondary, that aint gonna work.

4. They are getting better every game. Monroe is a stud and Britton has a lot of upside. I expect them to be the bookends for the next decade.

Is Jack Del Rio catching any heat yet?

by gahnki on Dec 29, 2009 1:03 AM EST reply actions

He is okay

IF he wins this game. 8-8 was the dream scenario before the season. After 7-5; uhm; well “it is what it is”-Del Rio like to say it that way…

But I think with a win he is 100% returner for 2010

Two coaches with strong (external) motivation to win then, with Mangini here working to show that his “process” can produce results. Good times!

by RelapsingDawgCatcher on Dec 29, 2009 10:12 AM EST up reply actions

He shouldn't be catching heat

This team was torn apart about as much as any team can be torn apart. Over half the roster is made up of guys that weren’t in Jacksonville last year. 16 of the players are rookies. What Jack does best is coach up young players and he has done a great job at that. Make no doubt about it, this team has overachieved to even be in the playoff hunt.

by Adam Stites on Dec 29, 2009 5:42 PM EST up reply actions

Well, I would like to say good luck, but I still want you guys to lose :-) So I’ll say stay healthy and I hope no one gets injured.
Hope you guys take care of Anthony Smith (S) down there and if you don’t want him I’d be happy to have him as a Brown.

Anthony Smith always seems to be in the right place at the right time

He just seems to have those safety instincts that lead him to where the ball will be.

I am sooo tired of this reference. It happened so long ago. The pollution was fixed a long time ago.

Now the beer bottles comment, that’s ok, it did happen about a decade ago.

roasting marsh mellows over the Cuyahoga

yeah…yeah…

Just don’t throw beer bottles

Don’t give us a reason to.
They were plastic anyways…and we were just trying to buy the refs a cold one…

or hit me in the eye with a flag, please.

Actually, our players should be more concerned about that …

by johnnyphoenix on Dec 29, 2009 4:52 PM EST reply actions

Actually the bottles weren’t plastic. The switch was made specifically because of this incident.

It also wasn’t the Jaguars fault that the whole incident took place, it was the referees for reviewing a play after another play had already been run. As far as I know, the only time in NFL history that has happened.

by Roger Dorn on Dec 29, 2009 5:01 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah they were plastic. That isn’t to say they wouldn’t hurt. .

Also,

President Carmen Policy:
"Those are plastic bottles and I don’t think they carry much of a wallop..I don’t think this is an example of life and limb being at risk. No one got hurt."

It also wasn’t the Jaguars fault that the whole incident took place, it was the referees for reviewing a play after another play had already been run. As far as I know, the only time in NFL history that has happened.

I didn’t say it was the jags fault. Yeah. That was definitely strange. first, they overrule a play that was inconclusive at best, then change the call after a play had been run (apparently they said there was a buzzer malfunction or something), then call the game, and then the commish had to make the players go back on the field and finish the last 30 secs. lol

by johnnyphoenix on Dec 29, 2009 5:20 PM EST up reply actions

Yes they were; they stopped giving people the bottles after this incident. They started pouring all beverages into the unthrowable plastic cups. The bottles could be… refilled… to create an unsavory projectile.

by danvail on Dec 30, 2009 9:27 AM EST up reply actions

Oh and actually it looks like Browns players AND Jags players should be worried about injurious flags….

Referee Jeff Triplette hit Orland ‘Zeus’ Brown in the eye and the very next year hit Jaguars cornerback Aaron Beasley from about 15 yards away during a game against Pittsburgh.

The guys a menace.

by johnnyphoenix on Dec 29, 2009 5:24 PM EST reply actions

How good is Justin Durant?
Why is Quentin Groves designated DE, not LB?
What happened to Russell Allen?
Why did you release Brian Russell?
I always liked Sean Considine, not starting on the Eagles is not a mystery they were stocked, but shouldn´t he be starting for the Jaguars?

by mooncamping on Dec 31, 2009 8:33 AM EST reply actions

Okay

Durant is maybe the most underrated LB in the league. He had a concussion this year; but other than that he was fine like always. He is the core of that very strong LB corp.

Groves:That is a good Q! He is a 3-4 LB; but he was bad in it in the early phases of the season when the Jags played 3-4 . He had 1 good game against Houston (2nd game)but that’s all.
He has heart; but he is a bad passrusher. I think he will be derated from JVille next offseason; but that is my opinion….

Russell Allen will START Sunday. That will be his 5th or 6th. Pretty decent LB if we see that he is an UDFA LB. I’m pretty satisfied with the way he plays. Could be starter next year; cause I think starting (and currenly on IR) LB Clint Ingram will be traded away (He will be a RFA next season)

Signing Brian Russell was our GM’s 1st mmistake(He made another-letting go current Panthers DT Derek Landri for free later). He STINKS!!!!! I don’t have footage right now; but in other SB Nation sites there are GIF pics shows how baaaaad he is. Luckly Gene Signed Anthony Smith and cut Russell.

Sean Considine is staring I think now that Reggie “What is tackling” nelson is finally benched. But before that he started and for example agaionst the Jets; he played best game as pro. He had also a concussion too.he missed some games because of that. But he is pretty much OK.

Thanks Zoltan. I adored Durant in that year´s draft. I spotted Groves even existing during this season, I think he´s a beast. And I had Russell spotted in this year´s draft even though I´m wary towards big guys outside, good luck he could be good.
Too bad about Russell, I know the Seahawks relied on him in their Super Bowl Appearance year.
Considine is a pearl, you must keep him from underachieving!
Good luck against us. If you want to win, give, give and give some more and then take it away from us, we´re desperate to at least look good.

by mooncamping on Dec 31, 2009 10:31 AM EST up reply actions

My take

Durant is not having nearly as good of a year as he did last year. In 2008 he was a monster and looked like a future Pro Bowler, but he has taken a step backward this year. Whether that is due to the concussion Zoltan mentioned or if he’s just having an off year, I don’t know. The future is still really bright for him and I look forward to him as a core player for the future.

Quentin Groves has struggled a lot in his two years here and does not look like he was anywhere near worth the 2nd round pick we traded up to acquire. He struggles really badly against the run and was supposed to be a pass rushing specialist, but he struggles in that regard too. Believe me the Jaguars have used him as a LB and also a DE, he has struggled at both. He’s nowhere near the build for a 4-3 linebacker and was terrible as a 3-4 linebacker. He’s flashed signs of potential lately, but not enough in my opinion to keep him on the team for next year.

Russell Allen was a great find. He’s the best UDFA find of the year and looks like someone who can stay on the team for years to come. If he can’t win a starting spot, he can at least provide depth. I like him more than our third linebacker, Clint Ingram, but less than Justin Durant and Daryl Smith. Daryl Smith has had a Pro Bowl level year by the way.

Brian Russell was cut because he was terrible. Plain and simple. We’re horribly thin at safety, but he managed to make the situation look even worse rather than better.

Considine is just more of a special teams player. It’s not that he’s lost deep in the safety depth chart, he still gets a lot of playing time and him deserving a starting spot is certainly debatable. The safety position will be addressed this offseason, I guarantee that.

Well, like I said, I think you´re need at free safety is filled with Sean Considine, if you entrust him with starting credentials. You may be better served by moving Reggie Nelson to strong safety, he was a highly regarded recruit coming into the 2007 draft, and checking his statistics, I don´t know where you are coming from saying he has tackling problems.
If you´re looking for a 4-3 defensive end check out our roster, these guys fit the mold plus minus position specific training and weight gain. Rob Ryan has been stockpiling 4-3 Ends and linebackers in an obvious attempt to maximize the odds of us switching to a 4-3. In my book these guys, probably to their personal chagrin, are superfluous as a team dedicated to a 3-4 defense. Viz:
-DL Kenyon Coleman
-DL Derreck Robinson
-DL Brian Schaefering
-DL Robaire Smith
-DL Alex Field
-LB Marcus Benard
-LB Titus Brown
-LB Alex Hall
-LB Kamerion Wimbley
Unbelievable, isn´t it?
If you´re seeking a 4-3 MLB, these are also unsuited to the sportier 3-4 linebacking core we are seeking:
-MLB David Veikune
-MLB Kaluka Maiava
-MLB Jason Trusnik
-MLB Matt Roth
and I hate to say it, but D´Quell Jackson is also not on my retain list, because he is somewhat of a heat seeker.
I´m always challenged around here regarding my player evaluations and designations, it´s hard for people to accept that we simply got the wrong players. But that´s just the truth, you might concur.
