San Diego Chargers vs. Cleveland Browns - Official Game Thread

San Diego Chargers at Cleveland Browns, Dec 6, 2009 4:05 PM EST

I spent about three to four hours this morning puzzled to death why my computer would not start up in its regular state. After investigating the processes in Safe Mode, I discovered a suspicious-looking one called uret463.exe. Thankfully, I had Internet access on my phone to do some searches. It ended up being a form of a trojan/virus, and I traced it back to around 4:00 PM yesterday.

I'm good at wiping out viruses when I find them, but nonetheless I was still taken aback. It was the first time I've had one (not even spyware) on this computer since I purchased it back in July of 2007. Thankfully the game started a bit later today, as I had time to hop on and put the game preview up still.

SAN DIEGO CHARGERS (8-3) WEEK 13 CLEVELAND BROWNS (1-10)
VS.
Date: December 6, 2009 Location: Cleveland, OH
Time: 4:00 p.m. ET
Stadium: Browns Stadium
TV: CBS
Favorite: Chargers by 14
Radio: WTAM, 1100 AM Over/Under: 42½
SBN Coverage: Bolts From the Blue Announcers
Kevin Harlan & Solomon Wilcots

Position-by-Position Breakdown

Pos Adv  Reason
QB - Ryan Kelsey highlighted the solid season that Philip Rivers is having. Brady Quinn needs to work on chemistry with his receivers still.
RB - Tomlinson and Sproles are hardly having seasons to brag about, but Sproles can contribute significantly in the passing game.
WR - Antonio Gates and Vincent Jackson are each going to have 1,000 yard seasons. Legedu Naanee has made some noise due to his name and his production.
OL - Tomlinson and Sproles can't even each 3.5 yards per carry; the Browns' line continues to remain the most stable part of the team.
DL - With Shaun Rogers and Kenyon Coleman both out, it's not even worth looking at the other team -- we're worse.
LB - If there's anything left to gain defensively this season, it's whether or not Matt Roth or Jason Trusnik can be our starting OLB next season (note: I'd like to see Veikune somewhere, but it won't happen).
DB - The Brandon McDonald demotion seems to have gone a bit too far; I'm still wondering what's up with Coye Francies.
ST - Go Joshua Cribbs, again! This week it's even because Nate Kaeding is a solid kicker and Mike Scifres can directional punt and pin teams back much better than Reggie Hodges can.

I thank the local stations and various organizations for making it possible that this game isn't blacked out. With that said, in a business sense, it probably doesn't make a whole lot of a sense, but oh well. The Chargers have been on fire and have all the tools to blow the Browns out.

FINAL PREDICTION: San Diego Chargers 31, Cleveland Browns 10.
CHRIS' RECORD IN PICKING BROWNS GAMES: 9-2
CHRIS' OVERALL NFL PREDICTIONS RECORD: 127-50

This is the official gameday thread for the Cleveland Browns in Week 13 as they take on the San Diego Chargers. All comments regarding the game should be posted in this thread. Enjoy the game, and GO BROWNS!!!

Go Browns! Go Cribbs! Go MoMass! Go, er, Evan Moore! and… Go Quinn! :)

by emily522 on Dec 6, 2009 2:25 PM EST up reply actions

how about we simplify this to: “go anyone who won’t screw up!”

by emily522 on Dec 6, 2009 3:04 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah, kind of missed the obvious there, eh? :)

by RelapsingDawgCatcher on Dec 6, 2009 3:03 PM EST up reply actions

Nope, you deserve a k+ for picking Evan Moore!

by LondonBrown on Dec 6, 2009 4:13 PM EST up reply actions

Am I feeling pretty good about picking up his name now? Well, yes.

by RelapsingDawgCatcher on Dec 6, 2009 9:28 PM EST up reply actions

who just saw robert meachem get the fumble back from an interception and score a td? crazy.

Browns 29 — Chargers 27

by golanbatrac on Dec 6, 2009 2:55 PM EST reply actions

I’d like to see the Browns go 4 wide on every play and pass about 40 times today. With only two runningbacks on the roster and no meaningful reason to play a standard offensive game (run, run, pass, punt) then we may as well have some fun with it.

by gahnki on Dec 6, 2009 3:06 PM EST reply actions

I think seeing the SD D staying in a 3-4 with us fielding 4 wideouts would be too humiliating…

by LondonBrown on Dec 6, 2009 3:14 PM EST reply actions

GO RAIDERS! winning 13-10 against pitt.

by emily522 on Dec 6, 2009 3:32 PM EST reply actions

And will Washington be the team to stop the Saints? Campbell is having a right game!

by LondonBrown on Dec 6, 2009 3:38 PM EST reply actions

Campbell is someone the Browns should look at in the offseason.

by gahnki on Dec 6, 2009 3:42 PM EST up reply actions

No, I really don’t think he’s be any upgrade on Anderson, let alone Quinn.

by LondonBrown on Dec 6, 2009 3:50 PM EST up reply actions

And why do you believe that?

by gahnki on Dec 6, 2009 3:54 PM EST up reply actions

I don’t think he has any upgrade in terms of poise in the pocket/ ability to lead the team. I think Quinn can do it, or I refuse to believe that he can’t given such an overall terrible offense.

Campbell has looked average in fairly decent company on the ’skins offense. They have some nice veterans there (Cooley, Randle El) whom Quinn would surely love to have on the same page of the playbook.

Looking at todays games though I’m wondering about nicking a RB off of the Raiders though….

by LondonBrown on Dec 6, 2009 3:59 PM EST reply actions

They didn’t exactly do much on the ground today. I’ve always like Bush, or course he went to school at Louisville, but he was kind of sporadic this year and had some costly fumbles. I’m not thinking that McFadden or Fargas would be available.

Fair enough. I just don’t believe Quinn/Anderson are any good, period. I think Campbell has been fairly solid and would be a nice option to have instead of taking a quarterback in the draft.

by gahnki on Dec 6, 2009 4:07 PM EST up reply actions

Gah missed 23yd FG- Skins are going to be gutted!

by LondonBrown on Dec 6, 2009 4:17 PM EST up reply actions

I think that would be a truly terrible move.

by Brownie's Year on Dec 6, 2009 5:28 PM EST reply actions

yeah thats not bad either, but considering we’ve had three solid drives you’d like to see them rewarded with a closer game

by notthatnoise on Dec 6, 2009 5:29 PM EST up reply actions

it is close. down by 6 is very good

If you're at the table and you don't see a sucker..... you're it.

by Brownie's Year on Dec 6, 2009 5:32 PM EST up reply actions

i know its close, much closer than we could have reasonably expected, but i think we played well enough to have a lead right now, so to be down six is kinda lame

by notthatnoise on Dec 6, 2009 5:34 PM EST up reply actions

that could have very easily been interference

by notthatnoise on Dec 6, 2009 5:28 PM EST reply actions

there was definitely a bump, i’ve seen softer penalties called

by notthatnoise on Dec 6, 2009 5:30 PM EST up reply actions

It was a bump, but there was no play on the ball.

by Western Reserve on Dec 6, 2009 5:31 PM EST up reply actions

then its illegal contact

by notthatnoise on Dec 6, 2009 5:33 PM EST up reply actions

Not if the ball isn’t catchable.

by Western Reserve on Dec 6, 2009 5:39 PM EST up reply actions

that only applies to interference. if a defensive player makes contact with a receiver past five yards its a penalty, regardless if the ball has even been thrown or not.

by notthatnoise on Dec 6, 2009 5:41 PM EST up reply actions

Ball was in the air. There was a bump on a WR on a ball that can’t be caught. They aren’t throwing the flag.

by Western Reserve on Dec 6, 2009 5:44 PM EST up reply actions

regardless of whether they are or not, its technically a penalty

by notthatnoise on Dec 6, 2009 5:45 PM EST up reply actions

lol it was

by Brownie's Year on Dec 6, 2009 5:30 PM EST up reply actions

how has quinn been playing

by irish1083 on Dec 6, 2009 5:33 PM EST reply actions

12-20, 159 yards, TD.
only bad thing he’s done is he fumbled the ball at the 3 yard line, leading to those 3 SD points.

by emily522 on Dec 6, 2009 5:34 PM EST up reply actions

but overall… better than i expected.

and we broke the record of 34 games w/o a TD on the first possession!

by emily522 on Dec 6, 2009 5:34 PM EST up reply actions

this is nit-picky, but i think it was the 8

by notthatnoise on Dec 6, 2009 5:35 PM EST up reply actions

ah, well then. fumbled on the 8.

by emily522 on Dec 6, 2009 5:35 PM EST up reply actions

by notthatnoise on Dec 6, 2009 5:41 PM EST up reply actions

13-7. hey, not bad. it isn’t a blow out (yet. but i hope it doesn’t happen!) could be 13-13 at this point but what’s done is done! the offense is doing pretty well besides some miscues.

at least robiskie showed some promise. felt bad that he almost had his first nfl touchdown but it was knocked away at the last second! and for being 11th against the pass, quinn did a nice job.

and evan moore… he just came out of nowhere! he caught just about everything thrown to him, except for that boink! catch on his helmet haha.

by emily522 on Dec 6, 2009 7:13 PM EST reply actions

The drops by Vickers and Harrison didn’t help. Credit to Quinn he just shrugged it off and threw a pass after that.

Evan Moore shows the value of a Stanford education, bachelor’s and master’s in 4 years plus 2 years of basketball.

Now we need Heisman deserving Gerhart to go with him. Gerhart taking 21 units this quarter with a major in management science and engineering, and will be 3 classes shy of his degree at the end of the month.

by Roger Dorn on Dec 6, 2009 10:39 PM EST up reply actions

it was definitely nice to see the offense perform against a decent defense, i even think i recall someone saying SD had the 11th ranked pass defense?

at this point its a little useless to try and rate the defense as about half the starters are injured and a good deal of the second stringers too.

by notthatnoise on Dec 6, 2009 10:46 PM EST up reply actions

Agreed. The defense has many excuses for poor performance right now. The offense, fortunately, didn’t need so many today.
