Sean Jones
What will new coach Eric Mangini do with Sean Jones?
Let him test the market? Franchise Tag him? Try to work out a long term deal?
Yes, he had a down year but I doubt he was 100% either. It would be nice to get to a point where our DB's are solid enough that Sean could roam around and be that atypical AFC North Safety.
Mike Adams is also a free agent. Brodney Poole has had his share of concussions so the secondary is not looking to solid at this point.
I assume Adams will resign for a reasonable amount and if Poole can stay on the field Adams would be a solid backup but what if Jones leaves? Is Adams and Poole good enough of a tandem to play safety in the NFL?

Really tough question that I honestly don’t know how to answer.

I think you make every effort to sign him to a reasonable dollar limit that you have already figured out if you are Mangini/Kokinis. If Jones thinks he is worth more than we should be paying him, you allow him to test the market or slap the franchise tag on him if that is palatable to your plan for next season.

I think we’ve got to franchise him if he wont sign a palatable deal, we have too many holes to address this season to let another one be created. Deal with it next year.

Kokinis and Mangini are not attempting to sign any of our free agents until they get a chance to test the market.
I think someone will offer Jones 5 million/year for four or five years and he will take it.
Daven Holly is the only other person I am concerned about losing, and he probably won’t get anything close to a good offer. While we might not have many draft picks, we do have lots of roster spots. Here’s hoping Kokinis does a good job in free agency.

Looks like safety is a need.

He’s not Ed Reed, Troy Polamalu, or anyone irreplaceable. Franchising him may be necessary, but a long term deal is questionable.

I personally think we will sign Gibril Wilson. I don’t think he was cut because of his play on the field. He might come at a cheaper price than Jones and my personally favorite Leonhard will end up with the Jets.
