Trading Down

It is amazing how this combine has changed the draft outlook. Given all this shifting around, have our chances of trading down improved? If Curry is taken before #5, are there other players meriting a #5 pick according to the Browns needs? Crabtree? An offensive tackle? On the flip side, are some other teams, based on their needs, more inclined now to trade up? Which teams do you think might make that move? What picks/players do you think we could get in exchange?

Depending on how you value the individual players, I think only Crabtree Raji, Orakpo, Cushing or Maybin could be guys who fit our needs who would be worth of the #5 overall. Obviously, if you think any one of those guys isn’t as good ad McShay & co. think they are, you will disagree with us picking them at #5. Those are just guys who I think fit our top needs and have been evaluated as top players by various sources.

If we stay at #5, I am liking Raji, Orakpo or Maybin right now. If we pick Raji, we might make Shaun Rogers angry, which is not good. We also might draft a ridiculously dominant big man and have 2 studs on the DL. Raji’s work ethic and motor are his only questions right now, and Mangini’s track record as far as motivating those guys is somewhat of an unknown at this point.

Orakpo looks to me like he is big, strong, has a great first step, and has experience at LB. His ability to “anchor” against the run and his instincts are two things I question.

Maybin has the potential to be a terrifyingly fast OLB. He just seems like a faster, less strong version of Orakpo. He does look a little lanky and like he might be able to get stronger in the NFL.

I just don’t think any OTs are worth it for us at #5. Joe Thomas is good enough to be our LT and if he rebounds from last year he can be a (legitimate) pro bowler for 10+ years to come. We can find RTs and interior linemen later.

I think our sweet spot for trade partners seems to be picks 17-22. NYJ, Chicago, Tampa, Philly, and Minnesota could all look to get Sanchez or Crabtree, and some of them may be looking for a LT.

It kinda sucks that the one guy we really wanted looks like he has worked his way in to the top 3, and Jenkins looks to have free-fallen.

Yeah, I think Curry would have been a perfect fit for the Browns but it looks like his stock has soared too high. In fact, this mock draft at SI.com has him going first overall (very rare for a linebacker), and it says if he gets past Detroit then St. Louis will pick him second. So it doesn’t look like he’ll last to 5. And Jenkins certainly is falling — it would be nice if some team wants a player at 5 and we could trade down and still grab Jenkins (or a LB).

as far as available players who may induce other teams to trade with the browns at 5, the list seems to be some combination of: one of the OTs, the 2 QBs, Crabtree. my sense is that the top-2 OTs are WAY ahead of the rest of the field (unless Smith pulls a rabbit at his pro day), the top-2 QBs are WAY ahead of the rest of the field, and Crab may in fact be WAY WAY ahead of every other player. that says to me that we have a fighting chance at moving back a bit.

I consider Curry’s stock ascending and Jenkins’ stock falling to cancel each other out as far as “combine buzz” goes… the former sucks (I too wanted Curry) but the latter is a relief (Good God please no Jenkins).

Barring a good value to trade down, I’m starting to get on the Crabtree bus, if he’s as good as advertised pre-injury. Yay for shiny skill positions. I know it’s a lot of money to throw at receivers, but it is a position of need (I don’t think Joe’s coming back) and drafting this high is way more about value than need. See PGH last year, going RB-WR in the 1st and 2nd rounds, despite major deficiencies on both lines.

I’d be very, very happy if we took Crabtree. He’s going to be awesome. Adding him to Edwards and Winslow, with a little Joe J thrown in the mix, would give us a hell of a receiving corps. If we could find a RB later in the draft or sign a guy like Derrick Ward to share some carries, I think our offense could be back to ’07 form.

If Curry is there I think it is a no doubter and take a Heywood-Bay or Hicks maybe in round two.
However…I think he will be gone unfortunately.
Right now, I think, we are more likely to get Crabtree in the first and maybe Clay Matthews or another LB in the second.
That leaves CB/S and RB later or through free agency. It would also be nice to pick up a center. That being said this will all change a million times before the draft but it is fun to speculate.
BTW…I am always a fan of trading down but if there is someone worth trading up for then we would probably be drafting them or not getting enough in return.

I’m a big fan of trading down – the challenge is finding someone interested in making a deal.

I think Heyward-Bey is gone by the time we pick in the 2nd.

I would trade up with KC to get Curry if he is available. I just dont know what it would take to convince KC.
