"This means that when all is said and done, Matt Millen essentially traded Shaun Rogers for Andre Fluellen."

Granted the other party in negotiations was Millen, but has Savage really received the credit due for how this deal turned out over the first year? Of course not.

Should the Browns make a run at bringing him back?

by JulioBernazard on Feb 5, 2009 12:54 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Depends whether or not we draft Malcolm Jenkins. If we get someone else, I’d say why not bring him back and see what he’s got. We certainly need depth at CB.

You have to ask? CB’s def backfield needs all the help it can get. I welcome Bodden back with open arms and immediately install him as starter in whatever position he chooses. And the beauty part is we don’t have to trade talent or draft picks to get him. Here’s a guy with talent that wants to play in Cleveland.

by elsandito on Feb 6, 2009 3:49 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

That’s going a little far.

First, if Bodden really is considered a hot commodity on the FA market, he will be able to get a lot more than he is worth. If he isn’t actually that good (I don’t think he is), then he wouldn’t be able to step in and start right away, certainly not “in whatever position he chooses”. He had one good season here and was continuously banged up in just about every other season. I think we should get him if he is at the right price, and then see where he fits in the secondary. He certainly has more talent than Adams, Sorensen, or Cousin, so its worth a shot at the right price.

Second, where did you read he wants to be in Cleveland?

by rufio on Feb 6, 2009 5:46 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Well, compared to the guys we have back there, he’s a hot commodity for us. When Jay f’ing Fiedler is carving your secondary up, you can use mediocre talent as upgrade.
I don’t know that Cleveland would be Bodden’s first choice, I know that he seemed happy to be a Brown and assume he’d feel the same way returning.

by elsandito on Feb 6, 2009 8:18 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

So does that mean we should sign every DB on the market and give them a starting job? I’m sure there are better guys out there than Bodden. But because he “seemed happy” to be a Brown you assume he’s going to come rushing back to Cleveland. I’m pretty sure Bodden wants to play for whichever team offers him the best contract.

Look, we could certainly use help at CB. I’m the one clamoring for the Browns to draft Malcolm Jenkins. But Eric Wright is a good player and MacDonald would be good as a nickelback, so we’re not that lacking in talent. Bodden would be good as a backup (he’d certainly be a decent enough nicketback if we don’t get another CB) but I don’t think we want to be handing him any starting jobs.

Lots of people carved our secondary up. Lots of people carved Denver’s up too. Sure, they had Bailey and Bly but that didn’t mean a damn thing. You have to get a pass rush, and neither team had one. The best athlete in the world in the secondary can’t make up for dumb concepts up front. Ryan will be huge for that. Sure, if we get better DBs it helps, and we can actually use them to bring pressure, but if Bodden will ask for big money, I would rather give that same money to someone who can get to the QB. Maybe we can get him at the right price, that would be awesome. I just think he is going to command more money than he is worth and that we could get somebody else just as talented for not as much. Dear lord, we need someone better than Cousin.

I know there has been a regime change and everything, but Bodden was just traded by the Browns so I am not so sure he would feel the same way coming back. The dude has a healthy ego. Plus, the police at the airport basically arrested him for being Black, driving a big SUV, and parallel parking which I am sure isn’t the fondest memory he has.

Do we need to get a CB better than Terry Cousin? Absolutely.
Do we need to get a “starting caliber” CB? Arguably.
Does it need to be Bodden? No way.

Hmm. What about that guy we traded a 7th-round pick for? Travis Daniels? I couldn’t say if he’ s any good, though. I’m not sure if he ever suited up.

by JustBob on Feb 7, 2009 10:47 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I want to say he did but didn’t actually play a meaningful snap. I have no idea if he is any good.

by rufio on Feb 7, 2009 11:09 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Well, it may not matter anyways. I just read that he is due to hit free agency along with Adams, Holly and Jones.

I’m still trying to figure out what kind of organization gives up even a 7th round pick to sign a guy for one year and never play him. I think that more than anything illustrates the disconnect between Savage and Crenell, and explains why they both had to go.

I wonder who Miami will sign with that pick.

by JustBob on Feb 8, 2009 2:20 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

It certainly explains why Crennel had to go…’

Okay, okay, I’ve been down this road too many times…

I doubt that Bodden will command premium money after riding the pines in Detroit. And, we have so many holes to fill on defense, some of the talent will have to come through free agency to turn this defense around. We have seen Bodden perform to a high level here and perhaps noone would have more faith in him than the Cleveland faithful. But, yes, I believe Bodden will and should sign the best contract.

Future Full of Hope

This is a letter to fans of the Browns. I as a Vikings fan envy you. It may have taken a few bottles of aspirin and many Sunday afternoons screaming at your favorite teams coaching staff, but at long last CHANGE!
The sun shines again, the smell of the air is sweet and once again there is hope. There is talent on the roster, and fresh ideas on the sidelines. Your future is bright. Me, on the other hand, I and the rest of the Viking faithful are stuck with another year of worthless head coach. While there is some young talent, it is being wasted on a pathetic coaching staff with no imagination and no common sense. Much like your team was the last couple of years.
I’m not here to whine about our bleak 2009 season. I’m hear to let tell you that I’m excited for you. It would be nice to look ahead towards next season and be optimistic about free agency, the draft, and the season its self. Knowing that some moves will be made, talent will be acquired, and the personnel in the front office and coaching staff will be proactive. I on the other hand have to endure at least one more year of watching talent being wasted.
  Good Luck next Season

Any interest in Derek Anderson?

by Roger Dorn on Feb 6, 2009 2:09 PM EST up reply actions   1 recs

but he is an up grade over what we have now. Do you think he has what it takes to win in the post-season?

by SupaFan on Feb 10, 2009 1:29 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

He could be a #3 in the post season.

Ralph Brown was on the field when Santonio Holmes made that catch in the Super Bowl, so Bodden definitely can win in the post season.

Bring Him Back

Bring Bodden back and put him right where he fits in best and that’s covering the slot. Wright, McDonald and Bodden in the backfield would allow us to pass on Jenkins in the 1st and go after the biggest need which is LB. I’m still saying trade down to pick up some picks (if possible) and take Maualuga. I’m not sold on Curry, Maybin or Brown.
