SHAFFER CUT
1.5 million doesn't seem like much of a bonus...... Why not keep the guy?
Tucker is the starter BUT when was the last time he made it a full season?
I am fine with ManKok bringing in thier own guys, and trading K2, but how can we release a solid RT that has started 86 games
And I have read we now have 5 million in "dead money" taken away from our cap number.
This makes zero sense.

If it counts as 5 million for Shaffer alone then I don’t get it either.

Shaffer stunk when Atlanta let him go and he got worse in Cleveland. We ranked 31 in offense and he was a big part of it.

So put him on the bench if we find someone better, or improve other areas while using him as a stopgap solution because we already have a ton of money and cap room committed to him, don’t just cut him.

He had no value and any warm body was better than him. The entire right side of our line sucks. Notice how it got better when Tucker played (like in the Giants game)

And when Tucker played, who was he playing next to?
Who are you going to start, Issac Sowells?
If any warm body was better than he was then he should have been replaced by someone last year, but I am pretty sure he started every game. Not that Romeo ever made lineup changes too soon, but he usually made them if they needed to be made—even at QB. RT would have been a much lower-profile change and it would have been a lot easier to make. Shaffer was a big part of the line in 2007, when our line dominated and was even called the best in the NFL by multiple sources, not just when the right half of our line “sucked”. PLUS, someone must have found the part of our offensive playbook that contained our pass blocking schemes and passed it out to the whole NFL last year, because EVERYONE was able to get untouched rushers to our QBs last year—that isn’t Shaffer’s fault.
Why just take that 5 million in cap space and throw it away? “Hey Browns, you can have your salary cap docked 5 million OR you can have Kevin Shaffer and he can count for 5 million against your cap” Why not take the player for free?

The cap savings aren’t huge THIS year, but how many years are left on his contract. In those years, we are saving the entire amount of his base. We are not desperate for cap space right now, so the savings this year aren’t as important

The NFL may not even have a cap after this year. Next year is uncapped and then the CBA has to be re-done. This move was a poor move.

what about the fact that he might be re-signed

That’s what the Rotowire says. I saw something similar on the OBR

I was under the impression that the Browns offered him a redone deal and he had the choice to take the new deal or be cut and he decided to be a FA. I could have read the article wrong though.

That could be the case. Of course, if he doesn’t get very much interest from other teams, then he could come back to the Browns at a lower price.

True, but with so many teams needing tackles, I doubt he returns. St. Louis and Philly need tackles right now.

The decision was made because the bonus was coming due. All indications are that they want to re-sign him to a smaller contract

shaffer cut
the mangkok team is really proving they are the genius retard lerner hoped he would be(yes they only count as one person). i know shaffer wasn’t an allpro, but you don’t start rebuilding by creating more holes. outstanding work guys, you better win right out of the box.have a feeling I’m not the only fan(since mid 70’s) who’s fed up with this teams parade of front office ineptitude.

Why do we have to win immediately? Shouldn’t we do whatever gives us the best chance of winning a SB even if it means struggling for a year?
