BREAKING: Donte Stallworth Detained in Pedestrian's Death

According to CBS4 in Florida, Cleveland Browns WR Donte Stallworth is being detained by police for questioning after accidentally running into a pedestrian with his car Saturday morning on the eastbound MacCarthur Causeway on Miami Beach.

According to the police report, the accident happened at the intersection of Fisher Island Drive and the MacCarthur Causeway. The Drive is where ferry access is provided to one of the most exclusive residences in America, Fisher Island.

The news comes just one day after Stallworth received a $4.75 million bonus from the Browns. Please refrain from unnecessary sarcasm when commenting on this article (i.e. don't say "now we have a good reason to cut him").

The OBR requested a comment from the team, but were not given a response.

UPDATE:

Stallworth was headed toward the beach when he hit Mario Reyes, 59, around 7 a.m., said Miami Beach police spokesman Juan Sanchez. The unidentified pedestrian was taken to a nearby trauma center, where he was pronounced dead about an hour later. Reyes was near a crosswalk but it's not clear if he was crossing legally.

Stallworth, 28, was cooperating and no charges have been filed, Sanchez said. Officers drew blood to test for drugs or alcohol, which is routine. Sanchez said results from the blood test could take anywhere from three days to three weeks.

That’s pretty sad.

This is really not good news. My prayers go out to the family of the person who died. For the Browns, though, the bad luck continues — when will this end?? No matter what you think of Stallworth’s play on the field, this is not good for the Browns.

I couldn’t imagine ever hitting another human being with my car. My prayers are with their family.

I know what you mean.I was in a wreck almost 3 years ago, when an 18-year-old girl got distracted, lost control of her car ,and shot across the median of I-85 and hit me head-on with us both doing 70 mph. I will be partially disabled, but ambulatory for the rest of my life. I also suffered a brain injury resulting in permanent damage to the Broca’s area on the left side of my brain which makes me forget how to talk, sometimes. If it wasn’t so pathetic, I would be funny to watch, trying to remember how to talk.

The young lady was amazingly unhurt, but her 3-year-old daughter, seated properly in her child seat in the rear seat, died from a broken neck. I was first-responder trained and tried to help the little girl, but she’d been killed on impact. I have never been the same. Sometimes I want to die.

Any accident is bad period. But your story, my heart goes out to. I have a 2 1/2 yr old daughter and I thought of her reading your story. My life would have ended there if this was me and her in the accident. I can’t imagine what you’ve been through and the young lady. I am sure she to this day still remembers the accident and most likely has had a hard time forgiven herself. I hope and pray that she has and you have forgiven her. I believe that we all see each other again in high places.
God Bless!

Dear Nuke 44

Your post made me cry. I am so sorry. Have you thought that maybe if I just cried reading your post and that I will now pray for you- that someone else maybe is reading your post and thinking “maybe I shouldn’t drive drunk again” or “maybe I should put down my blackberry next time I am on the freeway”

how do you know that your lifes purpose is not in saving the lives of others? how do you know that your words have not affected other people and perhaps saved other children.

Maybe being a mom of so many kiddos makes me soft hearted. but if I saw you struggling to talk, I would not laugh at all, but simply give you a big hug and wait for you to finish your thought.

With much Love
KH

PLEASE

My heart and prayers are with you. Life, although never the same, is a life that was spared for a reason. My tears are flowing because of your comment that sometimes you want to die. Please live and teach others FOR that little girl who did die.

According to profootballtalk.com they are waiting the results of a blood test to see if he was under the influence. Why could he not call a cab or some sort of driver to come and get him??

by drunkrooster on Mar 14, 2009 2:50 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

This doesn’t mean he was definitely under the influence; I believe they would run the test in any case like this. For all we know, Stallworth could be perfectly innocent and would’ve had no reason to catch a cab.

Yes, blood tests are standard procedure when a death is involved

by Roger Dorn on Mar 14, 2009 5:01 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

If they’re awaiting the results of the blood test, why would you believe he would have needed a cab or driver?

Drunk rooster

These are just routine tests, that would be given in any situation, to anyone. We just have to wait and see what the results are.

Sorry Everyone I didn’t know that these were routine tests. I thought they could just do them if they had suspicion of trouble.

My prayers go out to both families involved. Would be terrible to be on either end of this.

Although there’s been plenty of tragedy to go around the NFL in this off season, it does seem that the cloud over the Browns organization continues. Condolences to all involved and let’s hope he wasn’t drinking (at 7 a.m)

I think it’s important to remember that, although a man lost his life, there are always two victims in a tragedy like this…Donte will have to live the rest of his life haunted by the fact that he took that man’s life. I hope Dante will seek some help in coping with this and, hopfully, his fans and team mates will show their support. I’ve seen first hand how something like this can destroy a person!

by Big_Score on Mar 14, 2009 4:57 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Let’s hope it was just a case of Donte being in the wrong place at the wrong time and his fault was minimal. Having a sister who died in a traffic accident, I don’t wish being anyone involved on my worst enemy.

My sympathies go out to both the family of the victim and Donte Stallworth. I sincerely hope that this was purely an accidentm that it was a wrong place/wrong time situation as jerseywahoo stated.

Donte Stallworth

I am praying for both the family of the victim and Donte. I too hope that Donte will have the help and support of his family, friends, teammates, and fans. This is going to be hard on everyone involved and yes please everyone wait until the facts are out before you sit in judgement on someone. Guilty or innocent Donte should have all our prayers because the taking of another’s life is something that will weight on the heart forever.

Don't be to quick to judge

We should not be to quick to judge, let alone assume that he was under the influence because it is protocol to take blood test in any case like this. What I don’t underatand is on yahoo news it says in the first paragraph that Dante was headed towards the beach and then in the third parahraph it says that the police won’t say where he was going or coming from. There is some confusion so everyone should not be quick to say that he was under the influence or that he should have called a cab or someone to pick him up. I just hope that the this gets resolved quickly for everyone’s sake. When I say everyone’s sake I mean the for the family that lost their loved one, for Dante and for the Cleveland Browns because all of them are affected. This is really serious and for Dante & for his famiily and for both of their sake I hope that he was not at fault. I hope that for the family that lost their loved one that they get through this tough time, they need all the support & love that they deserve. Their is no good out of this

Donte stallworth

This is something that should not be wished n any one – obviously there really are multiple victims here. so hopefully everyone will remember this – unfortunately the emotional aspect of this will leave scars that could take longer to heal. i just hope that there was nothing to contribute to this sad accorance. so may we all be intelligent and brave enough to say a prayer for members f both families affected by this situation. may we also leave the legal aspects of this to those who are paid and required to make those decisions. obviously thiis will be one that should not be affected by stardom or celebrity.

Donte Stallworth's accidents reminds me of Ram's Leonard Little

I hope there is no alcohol involved but the test will tell the tale.
Leonard Little made the mistake on his birthday to try to drive home drunk and his teammates let him. Everyone knows what happen on the way home.

After this weeks release of Orlando Pace and Tory Holt, Leonard Little is the only member left from the 2001 Greatest Team on Turf SuperBowl Team.
Life is precious…and driving is a full time job….no texting allowed…

CENSORSHIP IS WRONG!

CURSING SHOULD BE THE ONLY THING THAT WOULD CAUSE OUR COMMENTS TO BE REMOVED! THE MANAGERS OF THIS TOPIC/PAGE SHOULD BE ASHAMED!

by pitdoug1998 on Mar 14, 2009 8:23 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Your comment was fine. However, when the person’s post who was removed gets removed, all of the comments that were “branched” with it also get removed. So, when the original poster said this:

“You people make yourselves look pretty stupid making assumptions you know nothing about. Bite your lip next time before speaking because it appears to me that you people have nothing else better to do with your lives except to gossip.”

I removed the comment because nobody speculated. He was not censored; his comment was removed so that a hundred people didn’t keep responding saying “nobody said that”. This topic is about Stallworth, not having to say “we didn’t say anything like that”.

I stand corrected.

“I removed the comment because nobody speculated. He was not censored; his comment was removed so that a hundred people didn’t keep responding saying "nobody said that". This topic is about Stallworth, not having to say "we didn’t say anything like that".”

Thank you. That makes perfect sense and I hope you accept my apology. I will tell you and anyone out there Donte is a good kid and was an asset to our community while he in ‘Big Orange Country’.

Donte Stallworth

The truth will come out concerning Mr. Stallworth’s unfortunate accident. In the meantime, lets discuss Mr. Pokorny’s views of our first amendment rights. I will be sarcastic if I feel that it is the best way to express my feelings about the subject. Lets be honest, pro athletes are over payed and believe they are above the law. Huge contracts drive up ticket and merchandise prices and lead to the athletes acting foolishly and dangerously.

by phelpsbong on Mar 14, 2009 9:46 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Athletes are definitely overpaid, and many athletes do believe they are above the law. Far too many, in fact. When reading another website with this story though, I read something similar to the following:

“haha…now we’ve got a good reason to cut him!”

There’s nothing funny about this story, in my opinion, and that is just about the only type of comment I wanted to remove. If you disagree with that, then there’s nothing I can do about it. Don’t turn this into a rights discussion, because it’s not.

And, I did say “unnecessary sarcasm” for a reason. It doesn’t disallow sarcasm altogether, just the kind that is posted solely to “stir the pot”.

This is not a street corner, this is Mr. Pokorny’s website. He can, and will, govern it how he pleases. If you don’t agree with that, may I recommend Buckeye and 124th as a street corner for you to pontificate from.

Donte Stallworth ~vs~ Average Joe

My most heartfelt prayers go out to the family and friends of Mario Reyes. I can only hope that this was a true accident and that Donte Stallworth is not negligent in his actions, so my prayers include him and his family as well.
These things happen all the time and the only reason it has made headlines is because of who Donte Stallworth is, a pro-football player, if it were any average Joe it wouldn’t even be a blip on the map unless the driver hit more than one person and was under the infulence. Note the guy that plowed down several pedestrians on the Vegas strip in front of the Flamingo Casino.

My prayers and thoughts go out to the victim and to Donte. I have been a Cleveland fan for years ( BROWNS, INDIANS, AND CAVS). I am a trucker thats been out here for over 15 years and I have a motto " TAKE YOUR TIME NOT YOUR LIFE" ANY DISTRACTIONS can cost you your life or someones theirs.

This Has Nothing to Do With the Browns

Cmon guys. This is reality, not some woe-is-my-precious-FOOTBALL-team. I shouldn’t have to say WHO CARES about the Browns in light of this tragedy, so I’ll just say, Brown fans, WAKE UP.

Donte Stallworth

First and foremost, Donte is a honorable man, this is a tragic accident and I know Donte is grieving for the loss to this family. I have known Donte and his family since his days in Del Paso Heights in Sacramento. May God be with the family of the deceased. This is a very unfortunate accident, Donte does not drink or use drugs, he is a good man from a good home. He will do what is right by the family and you will see that Donte has a great spirit. This accident is not about football, it is about family, it is about the loss of a loved one, and a person who will have to live with what happened for the rest of his life. So lets us be kind to both the family and Donte because both are grieving right now..

Stallworth Has Apparently Admitted Some Alcohol Intake

Per 1100, he had 4 Patrons and a couple of margaritas – the last drink having been consumed at midnight. The accident was at 7AM. That should be enough time for a man of his size to fall below the legal limit. That is, of course, assuming he’s telling the truth. What’s now become clear is that alcohol is part of the equation, the extent and legality of which now stands in question.

Hello everyone

I must say that I am very touched by everyone’s very kind remarks. There is no unnecessary profane language and classless jargon. My heart goes out to the accident victim and the fella above who told his story. I have a 4 year old niece and l don’t think my family could cope with such a thing happening to someone who is still basically a baby. God bless all of you.

Sad but...

It’s horrible what happened to him, I’m sorry for his family. I will say though, I’m not going to put any blame on Donte because I live in Miami and I know the habits of people here. They have this tendency to just walk into the road as if it’s impossible that someone could possibly hit them. They don’t pause, they don’t look left or right. I can not tell you how many people I’ve almost hit because they just popped out in front of me when I’ve nearly been on them. But I’ve gotten used to it and now I watch anyone I see near the road.

Won't trust anything until I hear something final

Lots of reports say lots of things, won’t believe anything until I hear it. Anyways though, lets say that is true, that means the victim was crossing on a green light, not a very smart thing to do, especially in Miami. The way people drive here, it’s ridiculous :-D

It is a very misfortunate accident , but if alcohol is in the mix that is a whole new ball game. My condolences go out to the family. We will have to just wait for the results. The fact that he is cooperating will be better on his part.
