man…raji at 7 is pathetic. i’m becoming more and more convinced that he’ll be the pick (assuming he’s there), so i feel like there will be some disappointed browns fans.

I thought long and hard about going all “Those who cast the votes determine nothing. Those who count the votes determine everything.” but I didn’t.
Just so no one thinks any funny business is going on, my personal board looks like this:
1. Curry
2. Crabtree
3. Raji
4. J. Smith
5. Orakpo
6. Monroe
7. Stafford
8. Maybin
9. Jenkins
10. Beanie
I am against actually taking LTs, but Monroe and Smith are really good. If need didn’t play a factor, they would both move up my board.
This is only partially in response to you, DCMJoey, noting that Raji seems like he should be a lot higher.
this is my draft board According to the browns Needs.
1. Everette Brown (I think much safer than orakpo, technically sound and healthy and would help us get more than 17 sacks. He has size, excellent tecnique, Strength, Elite Explosiveness, and Very long Arms. He has been healthy all throughout college and he is the type of model citizen Mangini would love to have in the locker room to be a positive influence. The only thing at all that troubles me is the fact that he went to the same school as wimbley, which means nothing)
2. B.J. Raji (An eventual replacement to Shaun Rogers who I would trade just because the distraction to the team he is creating, although i would only trade him if we have a replacement for him, or trade for a draft pick to draft his replacement)
3. Michael Crabtree (if these two guys are gone, he should be considered. Kiper has him in the top three on his draft board right now and the way things are going with stallworth, i think mangini would want to release him, once they get back the bonus they payed him, because if the reports are true about him being drunk, He will get DUI Manslaughter which gets u 4-25 years)(plus i wanna see braylon go anyways. he runs his mouth too much)
4. Aaron Curry (I think he is one of the top 2 players in the draft and he will definitely be gone by the time the browns draft. I just think he doesn’t fit the browns system and would be a waste. he is an OLB and very fast, but he might not be big enough to play inside and his tackling is a waste as a 3-4 OLB. Plus we just signed Eric Barton and David Bowens from the Jets. Barton is a good starter, and we have Dquell, and Bowens is a good backup that played in all 32 games the last 2 years with mangini)
5. Malcolm Jenkins (this will surprise a lot of people because of his 40 speed. Think of that 40 speed as a safety and now how does it look. Great, right? Many people are projecting him as a Safety in the pros and I agree. He is somewhat undersized, but he was one of the better tackling CB’s in college last year. If he bulks up a bit and works on his tackling, i see him as a great safety, like Antrel Rolle has been the past couple of years for the Cardinals. He was a step slow too coming out, but a sure tackler.)
6. Beanie Wells (He posted a 3.8 40 at pro day and is a great power back with just enough speed to be a star. Yes he has injury problems, but Adrian Peterson has been relatively healthy as a pro and what running back never has been injured?)
7. Brian Cushing/Clay Matthews III (I put them together, because they are both OLB’s from USC. not as good at rushing the passer as Brown, but still good picks)
8. Tyson Jackson (at 6-2 296, he was built to be a 3-4 DE. He played DE all through college, but doesn’t have NFL DE speed or DT Strength. As a DE in a 3-4, he has it all. He can stop the run as well. He is big and can take up multiple blockers at times to let guys like Alex hall (who I really like personally) roam free. He has enough speed to occasionally get to the passer, but isn’t a true pass rushing threat. In a 4-3, he is somewhere between and elite DE and and elite DT. He reminds me a lot of Chris Canty, or maybe a Justin Tuck.
9. Orakpo (Injury history, and lack of faith in him as a stand-up rusher makes him drop on my list. He still has talent, and He is defenitely not a bad player)
10. Percy Harvin (I am convinced that he could be an excellent reciever in the pros. I had doubts about his hands, but they looked great at pro day. His lack of bulk could make him somewhat injury prone, but guys can bulk up. Also, mangini is looking to use Cribbs more on offense and defense so he would be insurance at KR.)
I did not include Malaluga because i feel the browns are much deeper at ILB than people realize. I also think the O-line, because of free agency, is no longer an issue. I am also hearing that the browns just signed David Patten and may trade braylon for a 2nd and 5th round pick
beanie ran a 3.8 40 and only has “just enough speed”??
by DontCallMeJoey on Mar 23, 2009 6:28 PM EDT up reply actions
Patten only played a few games last year and only had one touchdown. plus hes only 5’10. I dont think that hes a replacement for edwards, hes just depth.

Curry would not be a “waste” in the 3-4. Check out Jerrod Mayo or Patrick Willis who both play inside in a 3-4. The disappointment known as Andra Davis should have been enough proof for you that we need talent in there. Mayo is 6’1 242, and Willis is 6’1, 240. Curry is 6’3" 254, and certainly big enough to play ILB. If anything, SLBs in 4-3 defenses have to be bigger than MLBs/ILBs. How is being a good tackler wasted anywhere on any defense?
Everette Brown might have elite explosiveness, but Maybin has an even better first step. Brown is also not as fluid in the hips and might not drop in to coverage well. Orakpo actually has experience dropping in to coverage, so how do you not have faith in him as a stand up rusher vs Brown? Brown’s technique is not perfect, according to multiple sources. Here is what ESPN has to say: “Not coached very well as a pass rusher, though. Poor hand usage. Needs to refine pass rush moves and do a better job of protecting his lower body…Needs to learn to use his hands more effectively…Does not show the violent hands to rip off of blockers as effectively as we would like to see.”
Jenkins’ 40 time is not “great” for an NFL safety, especially an undersized safety. It is certainly good enough, and I think Malcolm will do just fine in the NFL. Still, his 40 times might only be “great” for an LB.
Im not saying i want jenkins but is a forty time that much of a concern. I mean that doesnt change his success in college and forty yards is way longer than most plays
by BradyQuinnisBeast on Mar 24, 2009 5:48 PM EDT up reply actions
At CB it absolutely is. I think it is one of few positions where it actually matters. CBs need to recover and reel guys in, so their closing speed matters.
I don’t remember Jenkins giving up many big plays at OSU, but the camera stays on the QB so you can’t really see downfield, and I don’t remember anyone really going right at Jenkins to test him.
Also, the original comment posted specifically listed Jenkins’ 40 time as “great” for a safety. I was simply responding to that.
i agree with DontCallmeJoey. BJ Raji is easily one of the top 10-15 players in the draft and would make our D-line soo much better. If brown and Curry are gone, which is very likely, i would take Raji Immediately. He is #3 on my browns draft board. the one thing though is he is a natural nose tackle and because of that i would trade shaun rogers for a first rounder (yes, a team would give that up for him. possibly Indy b/c of their inability to stop the run) and we would get a long term replacement for rogers and another pick. My personal opinion is, since the signing of houshman(whatever his name is) and the trade for cassel that 3 and 4 in the draft will be Curry, Raji. so i say for the browns to pick brown. I think, although he comes from FSU like wimbley, that he is a safer pick than orakpo. I have heard several reports that he looks stiff standing up and in coverage and some experts predict him more as a 4-3 DE, possibly going to Cincy. I like everette brown’s whole package. he may not be as strong as Orakpo, but i think he is less of a risk as a pass rusher. B/c of his size, Brown is projected as an OLB, and the key thing with a 3-4 pass rusher (the lack of which is the main reason why wimbley proved to be a bust) is tecnique. everette brown’s strengths are strength, explosiveness off the line, long arms, and pass rushing technique. these are all the key factors in a successful pass rusher. Yes Orakpo has all of that, but he also has a larger injury history than adrian peterson. So that would leave you with a pass rusher who can’t get to the qb and one who is off the field more than off.
Just wondering but why do you all want Raji? I know hes a beast but we already have shaun rogers at DT and we play a 3-4
by BradyQuinnisBeast on Mar 23, 2009 5:00 PM EDT reply actions
Well, it could be a few things. Rogers can’t play every down (see how often he is huffing and puffing after a long series). Raji could be played as an end for a few snaps as well.
Not to mention, if Rogers disappears (am praying he doesn’t), he can take his place.
I didnt think he had the speed to play end though.
by BradyQuinnisBeast on Mar 23, 2009 6:00 PM EDT up reply actions
He absolutely has that speed. He would be faster than whoever we consider our starting RDE right now. The reason he is a consensus top-5 talent is because he is 330lbs and fast.
A solid DC could do some awesome things with Raji and Rogers. Baltimore uses Ngata and Gregg together all the time, we can do similar things.
You can never have to many good defensive lineman. It’s the backbone of the defense.

Love Tyson Jackson..
as a 5 technique DE, but not at #5. In the second round, yes, but he’ll be gone by then.
