Cleveland Browns 2009 NFL Draft Day 1 - Open Thread / Live Blog
It's Day 1 of the NFL Draft, and for Cleveland Browns fans, this year's first day will be a lot more exciting than last year's. In 2008, Phil Savage's various trades led to the Browns not having a Day 1 pick. This year, we are what I would consider stacked with Day 1 picks:
Cleveland Browns Day 1 Picks:
- Round 1: No. 5 overall
- Round 2: No. 36 overall
- Round 2: No. 50 overall
The draft will begin promptly at 4:00pm EST, with the Detroit Lions on the clock. Hopefully they do not waste any time announcing their pick, since they have already signed QB Matthew Stafford to a deal. In essence, the draft should start with the St. Louis Rams on the clock at No. 2 overall.
Teams will have 10 minutes to select in Round 1 and 7 minutes to select in Round 2. By my estimates, that means the Browns should be on the clock for their first pick from about 4:35pm to 4:45pm. I will be providing live blog coverage up until the Browns' first round pick. After that, I may not be back until around 10:00pm unfortunately.
Dawgs By Nature LIVE BLOG of Day 1 of the 2009 NFL Draft:
- 1:05 PM: Early morning rumors are circulating over the Internet again that the Browns will select QB Mark Sanchez, and then trade QB Brady Quinn. I don't see it happening -- why would it make sense either?
- 1:10 PM: I always like reading what Scott Wright of NFLDraftCountdown has to say in his mock draft. They have the Browns going all defense on Day 1, with LB Aaron Curry at No. 5, LB Larry English at No. 36, and S William Moore at No. 50.
- 2:05 PM: Mocking Dan wonders why several popular draft "experts" have skyrocketed the projection of DE Tyson Jackson to No. 3 overall. I believe I also read a rumor yesterday that the Browns might be interested in him at that point. If we pick him at No. 5, it'd be a disappointment, considering I'd rather have Orakpo or Raji.
- 2:15 PM: JasonB, our Philadelphia Eagles blogger who is LIVE at the NFL Draft, has provided a photo of the area surrounding him today:

That's how close our guys are to the action! Besides Dawgs By Nature, be sure to visit Mocking the Draft, Mile High Report, and Bleeding Green Nation for what should be some amazing coverage related to the draft. Almost every NFL SB Nation website is also live-blogging the draft, so feel free to check out the entire network of site throughout the weekend.
- 2:20 PM: The comedy routine just keeps on getting funnier guys: Steve Wyche of NFL.com is reporting that the Browns and Giants have not discussed a deal involving WR Braylon Edwards for weeks. Wyche also reports that he is hearing that it would be a huge surprise if QB Brady Quinn gets dealt.
- 2:50 PM: A little over an hour away now! QB Matt Cassel received a 6-year contract today with $36 million guaranteed. That's what Belichick does for you, I guess.
- 2:52 PM: One of our sources at the draft overheard Yahoo's Jason Cole state that the Panthers aren't finding any interest in DE Julius Peppers.
- 3:09 PM: The good guys are now on Sirius Radio, as we're less than an hour away from the draft: Gil Brandt and Adam Schein in particular.
- 3:12 PM: Brandt believes that either WR Anquan Boldin or WR Braylon Edwards will be moved today.
- 3:17 PM: Turf Show Times is digging and believes the New York Jets and the Washington Redskins are both pushing hard to move up (probably for Sanchez).
- 3:21 PM: Sirius projects that DE Tyson Jackson or LB Aaron Curry will be the first defensive player off the board. It was stated that Curry could be there at No. 5 for Cleveland, but that Jackson could be a surprise first (defensive) pick at No. 3. Not such a surprise though if it's being talked about ahead of time, eh?
- 3:39 PM: Mocking Dan reports via a source that the Browns are not involved in any trade talk.
- 3:43 PM: To update on the previous statement, Dan states that this means "[no trades] in general. No trade talk at all." In other words, not only is there nothing about the No. 5 overall pick, but there is nothing about Edwards or Quinn either. That could change in a heart beat when Cleveland is on the clock though, I'd imagine.
- 3:46 PM: It just irks me when the fans live at the draft do nothing but BOO whenever a pick gets made. Seriously -- what the hell is the point of booing?
- 3:47 PM: Deion Sanders is introducing some of the top prospects right now.
- 3:54 PM: Pat Kirwan and Gil Brandt believe Braylon Edwards will be traded. No real concrete sources behind that; just their opinions. According to JasonB, some press guys are now speculating that the Rams could take Sanchez.
- 3:55 PM: New Open Thread over at Mocking the Draft.
- 4:00 PM: From our SB Nation sources: "Just got a tip that the Eagles may have turned their attention from Boldin to Braylon Edwards…"
- 4:05 PM: QB Matthew Stafford officially picked by the Lions, as the draft is underway! The St. Louis Rams are now on the clock.

Picture of the teams' draft tables above.
- 4:15 PM: The Rams pick is in, and here comes the announcement: it's Jason Smith, indeed. The Chiefs are now on the clock at No. 3. They are a candidate to select Curry, but Jackson has been rumored to them as well.
- 4:20 PM: The latest crazy rumor from our Eagles blogger: "Hearing some crazy rumors about the Eagles sending #21 and Shawn Andrews to Cleveland for the Browns #5 overall and Braylon Edwards. Seems very farfetched to me."
- 4:25 PM: DE Tyson Jackson is picked by the Chiefs. I have no idea how his stock rose so quickly, but credit to Kiper and company for making that projection correctly at the last second I guess. Curry is now that close folks -- only the Seahawks are ahead of us.
- 4:34 PM: What a bummer, as the Seahawks do indeed take LB Aaron Curry. The Cleveland Browns are now on the clock.
- 4:41 PM: BREAKING NEWS: The Browns have traded the No. 5 overall pick to the New York Jets! Waiting for reports on the full deal.
- 4:43 PM: With the pick, the Jets take QB Mark Sanchez. Funny how Eric Mangini ends up doing a deal with his former team.
- 5:10 PM: Officially, "Cleveland traded its first-round selection (5th overall, used to select Mark Sanchez) to the New York Jets for their first- and second-round selections (17th and 52nd overall, respectively), Kenyon Coleman, Brett Ratliff, and Abram Elam."
- 5:12 PM: Can't believe the Raiders passed up on WR Michael Crabtree earlier for WR Darrius Heyward-Bay. Now the question will be this: could Crabtree, Orakpo, or Raji be on the board when we pick at No. 17?
- 5:15 PM: Won't be Raji, as he just went to the Packers.
- 5:25 PM: WR Michael Crabtree goes to the 49ers. I'll unfortunately have to leave in a few minutes, but rufio should be here to keep the posting (but probably not the live-blogging) active the rest of the day until I get back.
- 5:26 PM: I guess you know it's hot when a huge wasp suddenly flies by your window as you are typing.
- 5:27 PM: GO BROWNS!!!
This is also an open thread for ALL of today's action! Please try to refrain from creating individual threads that state what you specifically think about a pick -- that's what this post and any subsequent posts that I or rufio make are for. With that said, if a late-breaking trade appears while I'm gone, feel free to make a FanPost about it until either rufio or myself have the chance to make a front page post about it.

That mock draft seems pretty dumb. We dont need two OLBs. Plus we have some needs on offense

All this talk of picking Sanchez and trading Quinn, I haven’t heard much about the financial ramifications. If Sanchez is getting a Matt Ryan type contract, that’s gotta be a lot more than Quinn, who was a 20-something pick with a contract based mostly on incentives alone. Isn’t this a huge factor, the difference in money?
www.lowbrowsophisticate.com
Definitely. Especially after seeing Stafford’s contract. For the life of me, I just see ZERO upside to taking Sanchez and then dumping Quinn.
I guess the only reason to take Sanchez is if we use him as bait and trade him during the first round. But…that really seems like us going out of the way for much more trouble than it’d be worth.

I would be ecstatic with Curry. I’d be ok with Crabtree. I could swallow Orapko. I would roll my eyes at Raji. I would puke and cry at Sanchez.
That could be interpreted as you liking Orakpo the most.

Ten minutes away from the draft, and [presumably] about 45 minutes away until the Browns are on the clock!
Dawgs By Nature - Covering the Cleveland Browns on SB Nation.
You know what’s weird? How we develop rooting interests for certain players to be drafted, despite having never seen them play or, often not even knowing they existed until the last few months, not to mention that we know that the firstround is full of flameouts and disappointments. I remember reading the SI writeup of Tommy Vardell when he was coming out of Stanford and just hoping and hoping that he’d be the Browns’ pick. When they drafted him I was ecstatic. So it goes.
Now Terry Pluto has me rooting for Curry (what a great guy!) and some receiver from UNC (Hakeem something) and I will be thrilled if we get them, and crushed if we don’t …
That said, maybe this draft changes everything. Get some help in the secondary on the D-line!
so do pennington and garcia

I’m breaking from my live blog briefly to write a short post on the trade guys. Continue discussing here!
Dawgs By Nature - Covering the Cleveland Browns on SB Nation.
Here is a quick scouting report on Coleman;
Comment: Coleman is a six-year veteran who has great size, durability and strength with above-average athletic ability. He is powerful to hold the point versus the run and shows natural strength to split double teams. He tends to catch too often, but has improved his hand use to extend and lock out on blockers. He is best between the tackles because he doesn’t appear to have great range in pursuit. He is limited with his pass-rush moves and counters. Coleman tends to rush down the middle of his opponent too often and needs to expand his hand use and pass-rush package. He appears to have improved his reactions as plays unfold. He feels pad pressure well and constricts running lanes. He shows decent initial pop to stymie blockers at the line of scrimmage and has a powerful lower body to flash decent bull rush. Coleman was a career backup before landing in New York and performed well enough to solidify his starting position. He is best aligned as a five—technique rather than inside over the guard in even fronts.

Hey guys, just showed up from the OSU Spring Game. Glad to see we traded down, sounds like we got a good deal. Hopefully getting Ratliff means we’re trading DA. There should be a lot of good players available at 17, and now we have 3 second round picks.
By the way, Pryor looked awesome today. He made a few really nice throws including 2 long TD passes. He’s gained about 7-8 pounds of muscle this winter. I’m so looking forward to watching him play this fall.

He’s been tearing it up all spring. He is finally healthy as you note. Him and Boom should be RB by committee. It will be interesting to see if J. Berry gets any PT, and if Jackson or the other Frosh WRs can make some plays. WR = deep. If the OTs can hold down DEs and recognize the stunts/slants our O will be fine. I want to see Sabino completely take the MLB role.

Supposedly an above average athlete, but plays best “in the box” or coming forward. 6’ish, 205ish, good compliment to Pool, more potential than Adams, just from the ESPN scouting rept.

All of this to Rufio: I’ll be out around 5:45 PM. Can you also open a Part 2 Day 1 draft topic when this thing boils over like, 400 comments (or maybe close to the end of round 1)?
Also, I probably won’t be around for the 17th pick, so you can do the brief write-up on that too.

NO has to go Defense with their lack of picks don’t they?

Yeah, I would think so. Most people have them taking Jenkins.

Hmm…that would be intriguing. I could see the Redskins taking a WR. Or Houston.

they already have johnson and walter, two GREAT WRs

I’d honestly be excited about any of those picks. This is turning out great.
Do you think Mangini would pick maclin over those defensive guys?

donald brown is an amazing back. i havent done much research, but is he a possibility in the 2nd for us?
that guy in the steroid commercial was disgusting

Grossi has been begging the Browns to take him all offseason. That would make him happy. He wanted him at 5, which is way too high.

Yeah I know. Not a bad pick if you are confident you can coach him up. You definitely want more and more of those guys as it gets later and later in the draft.
I know. to me he seems like Maclin without the polish. He ran like a 4.25 or something like that and he averaged over 20 ypc

If we don’t take Wells, would Detroit? That would be weird if they totally ignored their defense and took QB and RB in the first round
Been at a bar sporting my BQ jersey. Real pumped by the details of the trade. Best thing we could have done given that Curry went to SEA.
All I can say is….options, options, options.

We're sitting on him
But if Wells falls, we’re calling Arizona for Boldin.
My best game plan is to sit on the bench and call out specific instructions like 'C'mon Boog,' 'Get ahold of one, Frank,' or 'Let's go, Brooks.' -Earl Weaver
You guys will love Alex Mack
He is actually one of the best linemen, not just centers around. Never missed a game for Cal, and they always had 1200 yard rushers with him blocking.
Type in Alex Mack 2008 highlights into Youtube; the video was just posted today.
Thanks for the insight. I wanted him to be a Brown, but I wanted him in the 2nd. Either way, I jope he is a Pro Bowler
by Bernie19Kosar on Apr 25, 2009 6:37 PM EDT up reply actions
Dude can do the splits! He gets leverage Pac-10 defenders had voted him the best OL two years in a row. Rey Maualuga has said that he was the best player had played against some time last year. I wish I was able to link his highlight video from my computer for you guys, but I have no idea how to do so from a Mac; but that’s another discussion.
You guys got a future Pro Bowler in the NFL. He’s won the Morris Award twice for best OL in the Pac-10 (as voted on by the DEFENSIVE LINEMEN of the Pac-10). He’s the hardest working guy you’ll ever meet and was a state finalist WRESTLER in HS. He also won the ‘Academic Heisman’ — the Draddy Award.
His best quality is that he plays snap to whistle EVERY PLAY.
You can check out his highlights at www.californiagoldenblogs.com
You’ll love him.
STAY THIRSTY, MY FRIENDS
Also, in his best game in his career, he ATE UP Sedrick Ellis (7th overall pick last year) and did not allow him to make a single tackle.
