This is also an open thread for ALL of today's action! Please try to refrain from creating individual threads that state what you specifically think about a pick -- that's what this post and any subsequent posts that Chris or I make are for.  With that said, if a late-breaking trade appears while I'm gone, feel free to make a FanPost about it until either Chris or myself have the chance to make a front page post about it.

Lets hope we can get some quality talent in the 2nd round!

So NE trades down a second time, and Green Bay selects Matthews, that’s one LB gone we can take at 36

I am scared that Rey ends up in Pittsburgh

maybe Buffalo takes him …

by talonk on Apr 25, 2009 6:59 PM EDT up reply actions

or the Titans …. although the Titans really needs a guy like Nicks

Donald Brown to the Colts

by Bernie19Kosar on Apr 25, 2009 7:00 PM EDT reply actions

Wow, Wells may just drop out of the first round altogether now

by talonk on Apr 25, 2009 7:01 PM EDT up reply actions

If we could get him in the 2nd round I’d be ecstatic. Maybe we can trade up with one of our 6 rounders for him.

by Buckeye Brad on Apr 25, 2009 7:01 PM EDT up reply actions

Actually, I bet Arizona takes him

by talonk on Apr 25, 2009 7:02 PM EDT up reply actions

i was gonna laugh at Peter King for leaving him out of his mock draft …. but he might end up being right

by talonk on Apr 25, 2009 7:02 PM EDT up reply actions

Outside of his injury history, the kid is a gangster. I think at times he was a bit of a pansy ass, maybe other teams thought the same thing.

IMO, wells to arizona.

How do you take Don Brown before Wells?

Buffalo selects Eric Wood, CB

by talonk on Apr 25, 2009 7:04 PM EDT reply actions

OC, not DB. Glad he went before Unger.

Kiper is right, whoever heard of 3 centers going in the first round?

by elsandito on Apr 25, 2009 7:05 PM EDT reply actions

I think its a mistake because I think Unger is terrible.

by rufio on Apr 25, 2009 7:09 PM EDT up reply actions

We could end up with Laurinitis in round 2 if Rey doesnt fall far enough

by talonk on Apr 25, 2009 7:06 PM EDT reply actions

Is this still a potential pick for us. Honestly, I think the Giants are really missing the boat fit they keep this pick in leu of BE.

www.lowbrowsophisticate.com

by kwoog on Apr 25, 2009 7:06 PM EDT reply actions

So is the big moment we found out if BE is sticking around?

by talonk on Apr 25, 2009 7:06 PM EDT reply actions

Barwin, Maualuga, Nicks, Britt, Paul Kruger, Sidbury, Veikune, all possibilities throughout the 2nd round if they are still available.

by rufio on Apr 25, 2009 7:06 PM EDT reply actions

well 7 picks in front of us, so all seven of those could go …. just kidding

Just saw the steroids guy you guys were talking about.

Those are his real arms, he actually got ridiculous infections from the ’roids and was draining pus from his own biceps with a syringe at one point. He is now upset because he has a scar from it and his arms are uneven.

There was a special on some news/discovery-type program on him that I saw about a year ago. Disgusting.

Glad we didn’t deal Edwards. I guess its still possible, but I want to see him rebound.

by rufio on Apr 25, 2009 7:10 PM EDT reply actions

what do you think nfl people know about rey that he’s falling so far?

by lenred on Apr 25, 2009 7:12 PM EDT reply actions

Tight hips? Questions about pass coverage and having other USC players cover his weaknesses?

by rufio on Apr 25, 2009 7:13 PM EDT up reply actions

When the opposing pitcher hangs the curveball, you don’t question it, you hit it.

by elsandito on Apr 25, 2009 7:12 PM EDT reply actions

So with Thomas, Steinbach, on the left side and Mack in the middle, does that make it St Clair and Tucker on the right side?

by talonk on Apr 25, 2009 7:13 PM EDT reply actions

Combo of them and Womack and maybe someone we draft later. Line looking a lot better if Tucker can make it back.

I really think he hit rock bottom last year. If that’s not the worst we can expect, I think ManKok deals him mid year and probably gets more than Hixon, a 2nd, and a 5th.

i didn’t realize that draft order was determined by postseason performance and not regular season record.

by macasson on Apr 25, 2009 7:22 PM EDT reply actions

I think that is supposed to change next year.

by Bernie19Kosar on Apr 25, 2009 7:22 PM EDT up reply actions

This is true, but it always has been the Super bowl winner last and the Super bowl loser next to last in the draft though

by talonk on Apr 25, 2009 7:24 PM EDT up reply actions

Currently only the SB winner and loser are determined by post season. That’s why the Chargers picked at 16 despite making the playoffs.

thanks, rufio. seems like an odd system.

by macasson on Apr 25, 2009 7:27 PM EDT up reply actions

Totally. As Brad said, they are thinking about changing it so the last 10(?) teams are the playoff teams, which seems to make a little more sense to me at least.

The kid cannot beat top level CB’s.

by Bernie19Kosar on Apr 25, 2009 7:57 PM EDT up reply actions

Please, name me the games he hasn’t had success against top corners. He had great games against any team that played man coverage, and that is the only time a receiver is “going against” a cornerback.

He kills press coverage. He gauges his speed and settles into zones. He does everything right as a receiver.

The problem is that he doesn’t have top end speed, and won’t be a number one receiver on a team.

What they said: 1) he runs great routes. 2) he’s a coach’s son who has “been on that field before.” 3) he’ll fit in next to Braylon, assuming he stays. 4) any guy who anchors the OSU 4×100 team can’t be that slow

They came out of commercial straight to the pick and weren’t talking about who else the Browns should’ve considered.

wow. DT, S and CB all in the second round. You gotta admire the way the pats have built their system to be winning every year and still have enough picks to rebuild their D in one year.

Ron Brace is a great value because 330lb guys who don’t have a rep for being a headcase don’t come along too often.

It would be hard not to look at Barwin, Sidbury or Sintim. I think everyone knows how I feel about Rashad Jennings. Moala, Marks, and Gilbert are probably in play as well.

by mjmarble on Apr 25, 2009 9:10 PM EDT reply actions

From cleveland.com:

Veikune is a hard-working, lean defenseman with top-notch speed for the position. His speed and agility may necessitate a permanent shift to Outside Linebacker in the NFL. He enjoyed a very productive career at Hawaii and is the type of high-motor, energetic presence that can cause fits along the line of scrimmage. He sheds blocks well and uses his hands to his advantage, often times engaging first and dictating position. Veikune had some experience standing up on the edge at Hawaii, experience that makes him a versatile project of sorts if an NFL team wanted to alter his role. He lacks the elite type of athleticism that may be needed to shift to OLB, and due to his lack of size he can sometimes be engulfed by bulky tackles. Veikune’s lack of ideal height and bulk for defensive-end will likely lead to a shift to OLB in a 3-4 scheme at the next level, where his energy and motor will be well served.
