List of Undrafted Free Agents to Sign With Cleveland
As more reports come in, this list will be updated. After the 2009 NFL Draft finished, the Cleveland Browns have reportedly signed the following undrafted free agents:

- QB Kyle Zeltinger of Univ. of Maryland
- WR Jordan Norwood of Penn State (Source)
- WR Brent Casteel of Utah (Source)
- WR Eddie Thompson of Idaho State (Source)
- TE Mike Massey of Michigan (Source) *Attended St. Ignatius
- OG Marlon Davis of Alabama (Source)
- DL Adam Hoppel of Cincinnati
- DE Marcus Benard of JSU (Source)
- S Jason Venson of UCF (Source)
- S Nate Ness of Arizona
- DB Corey Boudreaux of SDSU (Source)
- DB Bryan Williams of Akron (Source)
- DB Antonio Smith of Bowling Green (Source)
- P Chris Lynch of UAlbany (Source)
*UAPB free safety Stewart Franks will find out later this week if the Browns will sign him, according to a report.
*Another potential tryout player in WR Tre'dale Tolver of Cal Poly, according to this report.
*Long snapper Danny Dutmerof Wyoming will have a workout with the Browns.
*Offensive lineman Jeff Niedermier of Buffalo will try out
*Defensive back David Hyland will have a try out.
UPDATE: Boo. A slight bummer to hear that the Browns were not able to bring CSU's J'Nathan Bullock on board. According to the Green Bay Press Gazette, the New York Jets have signed him. Nonetheless, I'm happy to hear that Bullock was picked up by somebody, and it'll be interesting to follow his progress.
UPDATE: Another note on a local Clevelander, for those who like to follow the natives. QB Brian Hoyer, who attended St. Ignatius High School and then Michigan State, was signed by the New England Patriots. The first thing you can think of is "lucky SOB", eh?
If you find any reports on UDFA's the Browns have signed, please post them here!

Norwood has greAt hands.
Alabama had a great oline so maybe Davis will be good. Harrel is accurate and would be valuable if Anderson is traded. I hope we can sign that ot from kent state and Jeremiah Johnson

On the list, Harrel has now shifted to “tryout for the Cowboys”.

So does that mean he will tryout for both?

Hard to say, since they took him off the Browns on the list. Maybe we’ll know more tomorrow.

I have included a link (Source) for players that I found a newspaper-type report about. If they were only on the NEPatriotsDraft site, I have put (Not Verified) next to their names. Please remember that until the Browns actually confirm any of these signings, nothing should be taken as official.

I’m off for the night; feel free to post any additional signings as replies and I’ll try to update the main post in the morning.
Dawgs By Nature - Covering the Cleveland Browns on SB Nation.
Optimistic homerism time.
I’m really starting to warm up to the idea of Mack. If he develops into an above average or God forbid pro bowl caliber center, 3/5 of our offensive line is going to be outstanding for the next 4 years (and arguably the most important 2/5 will be great for the next 10). I literally don’t think the value of that can be overstated. We’ve all heard the cliches, “you build a team up front”, blah blah blah, but they’re cliches for a reason. I argued going into last season that despite all the press they were getting, I was concerned about our offensive line: specifically our ability to run the ball. I never felt that on third and three we had the advantage. With Thomas, Steinbach and Mack (and Vickers?) plowing the way our margin for error on offense increases dramatically.
Concerning the skill positions, we still have one of the 10 most talented wide receivers in all of football (when he’s focused). And unlike last year, we have talent at the position that now goes three deep. I agree with Brad that having 3 good receivers is critical in the game today, underscored after a season of having only one. The tight ends will work themselves out. The running backs are a bit of a concern, but good lord get Harrison on the field.
Which brings me to the defense and my second main point: Coordinators are the most underrated resource in the game. I don’t know if Dabol and Ryan are the answer, but all I remember reading about last year was how the acquisition of Rogers was going to free things up on the edge, specifically for Wimbley. Now, I know Kamerion isn’t Ware or Harrison, but I have to believe that his devolution isn’t solely due to him being a “one trick pony.” I think a lot of it has to do with coaching. Tucker talked a lot about “simplifying” the defense last year, and I think his problem was the same one that Chud (surprisingly) developed: a dogmatic adherence to an ideal scheme, instead of devising a variant of one’s ideal scheme to fit the actual players you have on the field. Whether it’s asking Steptoe to go in motion and block just off the line (as JJ did), or lining Wimbley up against the other team’s LT for 50 plays a game, the coordinators we’ve had tried to fit players into a scheme, not the other way around. This is all a long winded way of saying we still have one of the 3 best NTs in all of football, a first rounder at LB and 2nd rounders at LB, C and safety (and also Veikune). It’s not like this is Butch Davis’ defense, talent wise. With proper scheming/coaching, this defense can be top 20. And not a flukey, bend-don’t break, stop them in the red zone top 20. But a more aggressive defense that’s actually capable of causing a three-and-out.
Hope springs eternal.

I agree with your assessment of the defense. Coordinators are so important in the NFL, because you can make your players better or worse depending on what kind of scheme you build around them. I think with Mangini bringing some of his guys in from the Jets he knows what he wants to do with our defense, and between him and Ryan they can get better production out of guys like Wimbley and Jackson than we had last year. That alone will improve our defense, and maybe Bell and a couple of our draft picks from this year will step in and contribute. We’re not going to be the Steelers or the Ravens, but I think we can be around league average on defense. On offense, I expect consistant QB play from Quinn, a better year from Edwards, much more depth at reciever, and more effective use of Harrison. Put those two together and I think this team has a chance to be much better than last year. Obviously it’s early, but we’ll see.

I agree.
I think we are going to have to be a pass happy team because of lack of RB. I would like to see Harrison in a Sproles type role.I would be watching college backs a lot to see if there is anyone i beleive we should draft. Our Offensive line will be great next year, because Mack should be good, Womack and Tucker should be pretty good, St. Clair will be an improvement over Shaffer, and Thomas will make the Probowl again. Aquiring Massaquoi and Robo will help Edwards a lot since now the defense cant just key on him. I expect Quinn to have a good year.
Our D-line will more than likely be average. Shaun Rogers will continue to be a monster, hopefully Corey Williams will play better than he did last year, and now we have coleman and Robaire is healthy. OLB should be solid be solid with wimbley, hall, and veikune sharing time. We have a good ILB with DQwell but i dont no who will start next to him. Im guessing it will be Barton but i think Kaluka and Bell will both see some time. We should be solid at safety with Elam and Pool, but i wouldnt mind adding Berry or Mays next year. McDonald and Wright should continue to improve because last year was just their second year and we have good depth in Poteat, Ivy, and the guys we drafted.

as far as plowing the way is concerned, don’t forget that robert royal is reputed to be among the best, if not the single best, blocking TE in the league. suddenly, we’ve got a pretty robust, deep OL.
your point about coordinators is a good one, and, frankly, i think a component of the the most important point when looking at this draft: it seems clear to me that mangini thinks that he and ryan can coach up the existing defensive talent, while he is also showing us that he feels the offensive roster (pre-draft) is incapable of much organic improvement.
each person’s own beliefs about the above is likely to color their thoughts on the draft. clearly, the lack of offensive talent is hard to argue, but it is (and was pre-draft) my opinion that the defense needs just as much of an infusion of talent. that’s where my disappointment in the draft springs from. of course, i’m willing to concede that mangini and kotnkus (sp) and the coaching staff know slightly more than i do, so i’m not incapable of being convinced that this was a decent draft. the results, clearly, will help tell us that.
by DontCallMeJoey on Apr 28, 2009 7:20 PM EDT up reply actions
Royal is supposed to be that good at blocking? I mean I knew he was a “blocking tight end” but is he really a Manumaleuna kind of guy?
i can’t say from any empirical evidence, but that’s what i’ve been reading. you would certainly know more than i
by DontCallMeJoey on Apr 29, 2009 12:22 PM EDT up reply actions
I don’t know that I would. I honestly don’t remember seeing Royal play. I can take a look at the Buffalo tape once I get through my reviews.
I still don’t think its unreasonable to expect improved blocking from our TEs with the removal of K2 from our roster. Overall talent on O is a different matter, but the blocking should definitely be better.
I really think mangini and kotnkus (sp) leaned hard on best available, especially from #36 on. There are so many needs that I don’t think they gave much thought to offense vs. defense. Perhaps some analysis of this draft’s Safeties and DL prospects helped create the #5 pick trade. But other than that, I don’t think I can draw many conclusions about what Mangini thinks of his team. We drafted a LB with our 4th pick… and everyone knows we need LBs out the @^^

Sorry if it was posted elsewhere, but I don’t have time to catch up on all the threads and comments.
Has Alex Boone been signed yet? Caught a bit of the local homers on the radio late yesterday afternoon and sounded astonished that he was still on the draftboard in the 6th round. I’d have been astonished if he was taken before Mr. Irrelevant.
You know Selig? Ombudsman.

i like the massey, norwood and davis signings. i think all 3 of them have the possibility of doing well for us. i was really hoping we would get Jeremiah Johnson. he was a tough runner at Oregon. being a buckeye fan ive seen a lot of massey and he can play. same with norwood, he has really good hands. i think right away norwood>steptoe. that could legitimately leave us with BE,a vet in patten and 3 rooks that all have good upside. we just went from a not great WR bunch to not to bad if they pan out. plus with royal coming in at TE it helps us sure up the line as he is a much better blocker then K2. We also have Heiden who can block and has sure hands and the 2nd yr guy Rucker who has some good upside to so BQ should have some decent weapons. wish we had a little better RB core though. davis i think at least adds some depth at G. he seems like a smart and grounded guy that fits mangini’s definition of a player
interesting, albeit brief, piece on j’nathan in the nytimes this weekend. it doesn’t make me wish he had signed w/ the browns any less, but mangini and kotnkus (sp) must feel the TE slot is pretty set. i don’t think i realized he’d reported to jets camp, either.
