Looks like he missed his first season with an ankle injury, but his stats at Nebraska were 33 starts 216 tackles and 4.5 sacks, not too bad in my opinion. I didnt find if he played inside or outside though.

According to wiki, he played weakside linebacker for his first three saesons and the strongside linebacker for his senior season.
I believe Nebraska ran a 4-3, so that would make him an OLB in that scheme. How that translates to our 3-4 …. who knows.

Anybody that puts up a tackle count like that is worth giving a shot in my opinion

That size would lead me to believe he is a ILB in our scheme. His brother is Barrett Ruud, right? If yes, then I would lean even further to ILB.

and as I continue reading comments, yes, he is Barrett’s brother.

Lets hope blood tells here. His brother is Barrett Ruud, Tampa’s ILB, and he’s a beast.

I saw him play some at Nebraska(my ex was a huge fan) and he looked promising. I hope that ankle injury doesn’t linger though. Those can be pesky.

Now should we risk using this guy as a starter or play Bowens because of his experience?

Bowens plays outside and Ruud would more than likely play inside

I know you mean Barton, and in either case we should let people battle it out in camp. If young/new players show they deserve PT, give them PT.
If you ask Mangini, the list of players who have their starting jobs locked down is quite short.

Barton, Bowens I always screw those up.

Great ... Another Developmental 6th Round Draft Pick
All these free agents are a roll of the dice. They’re either special team players or soon to be released. Don’t expect any lightning strikes.

So what do you suggest, just getting a bunch of 1st rounders?

Last year's info
This was from the Patriots last year:

Not sure if the comments are helpful in seeing where he should be (OLB vs. ILB) but figured since he hasn’t played this is as good an evaluation of his skills as any.
