Taking Questions for Browns S Abram Elam

Many of you are excited about the potential of new Browns safety Abram Elam. He might not be a household name around the league yet, but Eric Mangini definitely felt he was a necessary addition to the roster after showing no interest in retaining former safety Sean Jones, and then acquiring Elam in a trade-down from the 5th overall pick in this year's draft.

Now, it's YOUR turn to learn more about the newest starter in the Browns' secondary. I will be sending roughly 6-7 questions to Elam based on your submissions. Depending on the number of questions I receive, I may have to weed through them and pick a select few and/or modify your submissions slightly to make them more appropriate.

Submit your questions in this topic. Let's limit the maximum number of questions submitted per person to three. Also, don't forget to check out Elam's website at http://www.abeelam.com/

Awesome!

I’ll submit three off the top of my head

1. Without giving away too many secrets (since I know Coach Mangini wouldn’t be pleased) can you discuss the role of the safeties in the base version of Mangini’s 3-4 defense?
2. Peter King of SI had an interesting piece on how the trade on draft day went down. Would you be able to describe the events leading up to the trade and your range of emotions as you watched it unfold?
3. There was a lot of media criticism and speculation that players didn’t respect Coach Mangini, and yet we watched 7-8 former Jets become Browns this offseason. What is the real truth about playing for Mangini?

All great questions. I especially like #1 and #3.

There has some new players added to this defense. In your opinion, is this due to a change in defensive strategy?

I’d imagine that one being kind of tough to answer, since this will be Elam’s first year with the Browns. He really doesn’t have much to go off of in terms of the former regime’s defensive strategy.

Why is coach Mangina so fat?

Heh…for some reason, I’m not quite sure that one will make the list.

1.Since you practice with them, how do our wide receivers and running backs look?

2. What are your expectations for yourself and/or the team this year?

1. How exited are you to play for the greatest fans in all of sports?

2. Obviously lacking in the past, what do think of the potential for this new Browns secondary as compared to previous seasons with the all the new additions/changes(yourself, Rod Hood, maybe Cribbs)?

3. Having worked a lot with Mangini in the past, what’s the single most important thing that you think he brings to the table as a coach? OR What’s your favorite coaching attribute of Mangini?

Have you guided your brother, Matt, through the recruiting process this year? Any brotherly push towards Kent State (intended to be humorous)*?

*Abram’s brother is committed to the Gators. He’s one of the top players in America.

The Gators!?!? We’ve got to get him to the Buckeyes!

by Buckeye Brad on May 26, 2009 7:30 PM EDT up reply actions

No, man, he needs to be part of the Fighting Irish. We need a safety in this recruiting class!

1) In the Mangini system is the safety more a cover guy or a seek and destroy type we desperately need?

2) What can you bring to the table that Sean Jones (arguably are best secondary guy if not best all around player on defense) did not?

3) Please tell us in your own words what will happen to Hines Ward or Santonio Holmes if they dare to come across the middle?!

by cfields on May 27, 2009 10:20 AM EDT reply actions

I would argue that Sean Jones was maybe our third best secondary player last year. He was definitely great in 2006.

1. Is Brett Favre a douche?

2. What former Jet, other than yourself, who are you most excited to see as a Brown.

3. (As a Buckeye fan), did you see anything from Vernon Gholston last year?

by Bernie19Kosar on May 27, 2009 9:56 PM EDT reply actions

1. What is your preparation like during the week? How many hours do you spend watching film during the week?

2. Some critics have questioned your lateral agility, quickness, and ability to cover WRs man-to-man. What sorts of things do you do to improve those areas (or other areas you view as personal weaknesses)?

3. Which do you enjoy more: taking the QB down for a sack on 3rd down or snagging an interception?

Thanks everyone for their submissions! I’ll try to pick the best variety of questions that I can; if none of yours get picked, don’t be offended!
