Tony Grossi just doesn't get it...
Tony Grossi believes that Braylon Edards is headed to NY. Not the Giants, but to the Jets for Thomas Jones. Yes the soon to be 31 year old RB that is now holding out for a new contract for Braylon Edwards.
Doesn't Grossi know that the Browns already have an over the hill RB? Here is his answer in "Ask Tony";
Rex Ryan knows that Mangini would scoop up Jones in a New York second if Jones were released. More likely is a future trade involving Jones and, yes, Edwards. You heard it here first.
Only way Edwards is going to NY Jets should be for a draft picks and David Harris. How can a guy be so close to a team and be so oblivious?

I don’t think it was straight up, but Thomas Jones was the centerpiece of the trade.

Kotnkus (sp) is smarter than to do that trade.

Let me be the first to hop off the Mangini Kokinis bandwagon if we trade Braylon in a deal that centers around getting Thomas Jones in return

Yeah, that’s a joke we’ve been doing because someone misspelled it that way and we found it humorous. Guess you missed that one.

I don’t know if Tony knows that his job of stirring up draft rumors is over.
Hey Tony, can you stop pissing off our players? We don’t need any more smokescreens, thanks. You clearly don’t know much about the game of football despite having covered it for a long time. I know you think some of the game’s conventions are silly (say, the ones that allow a player like Rey Maualuga fall into the 2nd round) but if you at least acknowledge their existence, you can explain to fans why they don’t make any sense. For instance, many GMs believe that a potentially dominant WR such as Braylon Edwards is worth way more than just about any running back. Or that there is an idea out there that running backs tend to decline after their 30th birthday. These are ideas backed by “reasoning” and some sort of “evidence”. Trading one of the most valueable commodities in football for the kind of player that no one wants isn’t usually a good idea. Spreading senseless hearsay hurts the Browns, and no fan wants that. Do your job.

Do you think it kills Grossi inside that Brady Quinn and Braylon are still Browns?

I’d love to see what would happen if we resigned Braylon.

You know, I’m almost certain that he’s written about the running back at age 30 phenomenon (in relation to Lewis). Which makes him just so much more unforgivable.

I very often get the feeling that Grossi is just throwing stuff out there to fill column space. That “you heard it here first” b.s. is the equivalent of psychics making a hundred predictions, then making a big deal when a few of them turn out to be accurate. I don’t see any evidence of careful reasoning or analysis on Grossi’s part. He’s getting to be more and more like Roger Brown – basically the equivalent of a gossip columnist in the sports section. Plus, it’s pretty obvious that he’s p.o.ed that he has no insider relationship with the new management team. I doubt that he’s any closer to being an insider than some of the people on this blog. If it weren’t for Pluto, none of the P.D. sports columnists would be worth reading.

That’s funny, after reading your first two sentences I thought “that sounds like Roger Brown”, then you made the same comparison later. He was so awful, yet somehow he has a show on STO (or at least he used to). I wonder if anyone watched that?
About the PD, I have to mention what a fantastic job Brian Windhorst does covering the Cavs (and sorry if I’m repeating myself). He’s the model of what a sports reporter should be like — quality information combined with good observations about the team and players. Even Bill Simmons, who’s of course a big NBA fan, mentioned him as one of the best NBA reporters in the country. If only the PD could get Brian to cover the Indians and Browns, also, they’d actually have good reporting of all their teams. Unfortunately we’re stuck with Grossi and Hoynes.

People will watch anything about Browns football on TV in Ohio. Browns fans (and most real NFL fans) are voracious. I can’t tell you how much time I have wasted this week—after the draft, with not so much as a minicamp happening in Berea—looking for nonexistent information on the Browns. I really should be writing papers.
