"I know one thing," he said. "What we're going to have here in Cleveland is an attacking defense. It's going to be an exciting defense, and we're going to play great football."

Sweet. I’m loving it. No more bend dont break, or as I call it, calmy let the opposing offense wear you down and drive to a touchdown.

I found something that claims to be part of Buddy Ryan’s 46 playbook from the 1985 bears.

I am looking it over, and it certainly is not a complete playbook, but I can see how the 46 messes with offenses—it is really odd.

I would love to see us run it a few plays/game. The classic 46 would almost certainly isolate Shaun Rogers vs. the opposing center with maybe a back trying to help out….

Either way, I am liking Rob Ryan.

The more that we run a 46 style defense the better.

I have said it before, but I love Buddy Ryan.

Attack, attack, attack.

(On why he is not running the 46 defense) – “We do. You’ll see that on Sundays.”

(On if it will be used as a base defense) – "No. Really, the 46 was designed as a nickel defense. It wasn’t really the base of my father either. It just started stopping everything so it became a base. We definitely run some 46 defense. Eric is a huge fan of the 46. That’s something he has always said, ‘Hey, let’s get this in, let’s go’

“What pressure does … it causes people to turn the ball over. To me, that’s the most important thing — getting turnovers and keeping points off the scoreboard.”

“We want to be multiple, want to have multiple players play different spots and cause confusion.”

On Kam Wimbley: “We ask him to concentrate on pushing the pocket and using more bull rush than speed rushing. You see him working on it every day.”

Sorry, last comment:

ghanki, do you know what Ryan was referring to as the “buck” linebacker?

I’ve read conflicting things online that seem to point to the “buck” as a LILB in a 3-4, a hybrid “rush” OLB in a 3-4, and a OLB in a 4-3 scheme. Does he have a certain responsibility based on the name (similar to a “Ted” LB whose job it is to “block” for the Mike)?

Anyone?

by rufio on Jun 17, 2009 10:12 PM EDT reply actions

This is the only thing I can find about a Buck LB; (It comes from Wiki so take it with a grain of salt.)

In a 3-4 defense the “Will” Linebacker plays on the “weakside” of the two middle Linebacker positions and a 4th Linebacker comes in to play the weakside. Known as a “Rush”, “Rover”, and/or “Buck” Linebacker, their responsibility is more pass rush based but often is called into run stop (gap control) and pass coverage.coverage for the LB is important for rushing yards

by Bernie19Kosar on Jun 17, 2009 11:40 PM EDT up reply actions

That’s about what I found too, except I may have found a playbook with the Buck LB as the Dime package LB and I definitely found a few college teams that referred to a LOLB in a 4-3 as a Buck, and maybe one who referred to a “hybrid” OLB/DE/“rush LB”, etc. as the Buck.

Anyway, here is the full quote from Ryan, which gives us the answer (I think):
“We’re playing him all over, at right, left, and also in a buck, which moves around.”

by rufio on Jun 19, 2009 12:34 AM EDT up reply actions

Sounds like Ohio State’s Leo position. A defensive end that moves all around. Either way, it sounds like a coach that is thinking of ways to get to the passer. How weird!

I just watched the Ryan press conference and he has me pretty pumped up. The fact that he had the Oakland D as number 3 in the NFL despite a last place offense is incredible

by Roger Dorn on Jun 18, 2009 11:11 AM EDT reply actions

I like this guy. I really do. I’ve always liked to watch aggressive defenses play, and his Oakland defense was outstanding. With the talent we have, I can’t wait to see what he can do.

Daboll on the other hand did not give me a lot to think about beyond his standard generic responses. I like that he is stressing intelligence, protecting the ball, and accuracy though

by Roger Dorn on Jun 18, 2009 11:37 AM EDT up reply actions

Daboll is the one to be worried about, IMO.

Ryan has a lot of experience, phenomenal lineage, and probably wants to do a lot of the more aggressive things we as fans would like to see. Daboll could be 2007 Chud, or 2008 Chud.

by rufio on Jun 18, 2009 2:49 PM EDT up reply actions

Yea. I don’t want to be wearing the rose-colored glasses so I will agree with you. We have a big unknown at OC right now

by Roger Dorn on Jun 18, 2009 5:00 PM EDT up reply actions

Even 2007 Chud wasn’t all that great. I mean, who called all of those passing plays during a windy game in Cincy?

by JustBob on Jun 21, 2009 4:44 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah but you still have to credit him with the offense that put a bunch of our players in the Pro Bowl, looked the most like an NFL offense out of anything the new Browns have put on the field, and got us 10 wins.

He was a first-year OC and definitely made some mistakes (such as the Cincy game, which you bring up), but he was also way better than expected.

Do you expect Daboll’s offense to have us within a tiebreaker of the playoffs, produce a pro bowl QB and two pro bowl WRs, and make our offense line look like the best in the NFL while our defense struggles mightily? I don’t. That would probably be the best-case scenario to me.

There’s always a part of me that hopes these guys read our blog, and laugh out how much we enjoy things like Rob Ryan’s hair

We should promote DBN to Abe Elam

We should have asked Abe how he likes Ryans hair when we sent in the questions

Kinda looks like Sean Connery with long hair. Not the real one, but the SNL Sean from Celebrity Jeopardy….

Would Kam be a DE or a JACK in a 46.

by BradyQuinnisBeast on Jun 21, 2009 6:42 PM EDT reply actions

He could probably play the really wide DE or either of the “OLBs” (the LBs who line up on the same side) in the traditional 46. I don’t think he is instinctive enough/plays smart enough to play the MLB but he has the physical tools to play there as well.

In one playbook I have, though, the SS covers a slot receiver and the Charlie linebacker shifts over to a more traditional linebacker spot in nickel situations. I would trust him to do this.

With the personnel we have, I would put Kam at the Jack, Veikune/Hall/Bowens at the wide DE, a healthy Robaire Smith at the narrow DE, Shaun Rogers at the NT and Corey Williams at DT. D’Qwell would be the Mike, and one of Alex Hall/Bowens/Barton would be the Charlie.

by rufio on Jun 22, 2009 12:02 AM EDT up reply actions

So like this?
                                              Pool

                                                                       Elam
                    Kam Hall DQ
                                           Smith Rogers Williams Veikune

by BradyQuinnisBeast on Jun 22, 2009 10:49 PM EDT up reply actions

I meant t to scoot DQ a little over

by BradyQuinnisBeast on Jun 22, 2009 10:49 PM EDT up reply actions

Close.
Note the Jack/Charlie are on the strong side with the wide DE on the right.

You could probably flip it no problem (you could probably do any number of things), but that is the traditional 46 against a 2RB, 1TE, 2WR offense.

by rufio on Jun 23, 2009 4:04 AM EDT up reply actions

I am so pumped about this defense I want to punch Kevin Gilbride in the face.
