Are you ready for some football?
The Cleveland Browns kick off their preseason today against the Green Bay Packers. One question has surrounded the Browns all week: who is going to be the team's starting quarterback? Will it be the gun-slinging, opening-day starter from a year ago in Derek Anderson? Or will it be the team's former first-round draft pick and Notre Dame alumni, Brady Quinn?
Quarterback competitions aren't new in Cleveland, but this one has a much different feel to it. After last season, I think the majority of us legitimately believed that Quinn would be this year's starter, no matter what. Even when Eric Mangini was first hired, I still remained confident that Quinn would be the guy. As the months progressed though, we all started becoming unsure of ourselves. After a few weeks of training camp and both quarterbacks getting equal work, it's anybody's job at this point. Who will seize the advantage tonight? We'll see. I haven't seen an official word on which quarterback is starting, but fans are saying that Tony Grossi told Sirius NFL Radio that Anderson would be getting the start.
UPDATE: QB BRADY QUINN IS GETTING THE START
Pre-Game Digest:
- The usage of the wide receivers will be a big issue for me tonight. Braylon Edwards should be playing, but who will be on the field opposite him? Will it be one of the rookies, Mike Furrey, or will it be a surprise in Joshua Cribbs?
- We'll finally get to see James Davis in action when players are really laying into him. I'm expecting Jerome Harrison to excel a little more than Davis tonight, but that might only because I've yet to see Davis flourish in person. Let's see if he wows us all.
- Can't wait to hear Bernie Kosar on the microphone.
- Check your emails if you said that you wanted to play in the DBN Fantasy Football league. I went through the list and took some veterans and randomly selected some newcomers. If you didn't make it, I'm sorry -- I am still considering holding a second league.
- We've heard great things about D'Qwell Jackson, and I have confidence he will be fine. I want to see how newcomers Eric Barton looks compared to Andra Davis.
- Does Kamerion Wimbley have more than one move under the new regime? What types of looks will we see Rob Ryan unleash? How will safety Abram Elam perform in his first game as a Brown?
- Today we get to evaluate which players are best suited for our offensive line on the right side. We'll also get a better idea on which tight ends are where on the depth chart, although I'm guessing Steve Heiden might be limited or might not play.
- My guess at the reps we'll see by quarter:
Derek AndersonBrady Quinn/First TeamBrady QuinnDerek Anderson/Second Team- Brett Ratliff/Third Team
- Brett Ratliff/Richard Bartel/Third Team
- Here's to hoping for an injury-free game on both sides of the ball!
This is the official gameday thread for the Cleveland Browns first preseason game of the season, as they take on the Green Bay Packers. All comments regarding the game as it goes on and immediately following the game should remain in this thread. Enjoy the game, and GO BROWNS!!!

WHY ANDERSON???
Why is Anderson starting?? The only logical reason, I can think of, is so the fans can see Brady at home!!
It really sucks that this game won’t be carried by WNWO NBC 24 Toledo. They’ve decided that this part of Ohio would rather see the 2009 Visa Gymnastics Championship. (They’re wrong.)
I’ll have to wait until 1 a.m. to see the game, when it airs on the NFL Network.
Anyone know got any tips for a Direct TV customer stuck in this situation?
2009 Prediction: Att - Yds - TD
Jerome Harrison 95 - 532 - 8
Inactive for the Packers are both starting cornerbacks, Charles Woodson and Al Harris, both first-round picks, nose tackle B.J. Raji and linebacker Clay Matthews III, linebacker Nick Barnett and defensive lineman Justin Harrell.
Sheesh…we’re not even getting their first-string defense.
The Browns announced four inactives for tonight: OL Rex Hadnot, WR David Patten, TE Steve Heiden and TE John Madsen.
No surprises.

3rd and 10, the Packers had four or five receivers. We brought three linemen, Rodgers had all day in the pocket and stepped up in the pocket. He then fired a bomb down the field that sailed into the arms of a wide open Donald Driver.

great drive for anderson. im sorta wondering if mangini is doing a drive per player and maybe we will see quinn back in next drive, then anderson, then ratliff
Anderson’s series:
-Arm hit, pass way in the air leaving Royal very vulnerable, incomplete.
-Nice run by Lewis
-Anderson immediately throws a behind-the-line pass to Harrison. Defense not fooled, five guys swarm him.

What the heck is this?
Panthers GM Marty Hurney is scouting Saturday night’s Browns-Packers preseason opener.
The Charlotte Observer suggests Hurney is watching DL Corey Williams, who could help the Panthers’ thin defensive line. Williams is considered a poor fit for Cleveland’s 3-4, gap-control system. Green Bay also happens to have a slight surplus on down linemen. Anthony Toribio could be available.

I am confident we aren’t bringing our full pressure in a preseason game. How that translates when the season starts is another story
If you mean
That depends on how you mean it.
that the play calling is pure vanilla, then that’s good; especially against an opponent that you will see again during the regular season, because you don’t want to give away too much of what they will see from you then.
But, if you mean that the players aren’t bringing it like it’s the Super Bowl, then that’s bad, because, during training camp practices, you want to take it easy in order to protect your own guys, but, jobs are won during pre-season games by guys who go all out and lost by those who don’t.
The glass is more than half-full.
What a sweet hit by Francies on the RB. Awesome.

Preseason isn't about winning
It’s about finding out what works and what doesn’t. Unfortunately for the Browns, they have a lot of the latter, and very little of the former.
This game is very discouraging in the sense that we really didn’t get a chance to evaluate a lot of players on offense, like James Davis, Lance Leggett, Brian Robiskie, Mohamed Massaquoi, etc.
Dawgs By Nature - Covering the Cleveland Browns on SB Nation.
That was disappointing.
I’ll still probably watch the first quarter at midnight on STO, though. I missed the first few drives.
2009 Prediction: Att - Yds - TD
Jerome Harrison 95 - 532 - 8
1. Nice to see that Braylon is still dropping TD’s.
2. Lots of throws to Cribbs. Might we be seeing more of him at WR in the regular season?
3. Where the heck are Rucker and Bell? Looks like last year’s draft was a complete waste, outside of possibly Alex Hall (and the trades, of course).
4. Not much Robiskie and MoMass, either, but Aaron Walker made some nice plays at TE. He certainly seems to be ahead of Rucker now.
5. Interesting to hear Bernie mention, after the long TD pass, that Mangini told him Elam tends to jump the gun on passes sometimes. That caused us a TD and he can’t do that in the regular season.
6. Do you think that guy will still be here claiming that Ratliff is our QB of the future?
“that guy” really has no clue, but you already know that Brad. I got to say I was really disappointed at the defensive play the most. I did not have great expectations, but I did expect intelligent, hard-nosed football and, for the most part, I did not see that. It was not quite like the Giants pre-season game last year, but we were about as ineffective. I was “shocked” when Braylon dropped that ball. Not sure why, but I guess I was expecting him to bounce back since it seemed he was having good practices. All in all just flat out disappointed, I know its early, but man it pisses me off!
Joey_D
Its just the first preseason game. You can’t evaluate any players on last nights game. The only player, that got any time was Ratliff. He was playing with the second and third team. The OL again needs lots of work. I’m very concerned, that Quinn and Anderson never had the reps. Its looks like he was grooming Brett Ratliff, and gave up on Quinn and Anderson. I don’t know what he up to, as far as are QB’s but I’m very worried. To much Ratliff and not any Anderson and very little Quinn.
You know that pretty much all 32 NFL teams go with the third string quarterback for the whole second half, right? When we did it last year with Ken Dorsey, did you think we were grooming Dorsey as our starting QB?

Oh no way, we the browns ever grooming Dorsey. Heres my concern, when a new coach goes out of his way to trade for a QB and all the other jets players that has played for him before. Then out of no were he start’s giving reps to a number 3 QB with the number one offense. That takes time away from Anderson and Quinn with the first string offense. Look at it this way what’s the deference between the QB’s ? Anderson can’t throw short and he’s not mobile to gave him time to throw long. Quinn can throw the short ball but does the tendencies of not going down field with the ball and when he has to take off because of the rush he no longer looks to throw the ball. You can’t teach instinct that’s the one thing Ratliff has over Anderson and Quinn. Like i said before he is very raw and he needs playing time. I never said he was going to be a starter i said look out for him because Mangini is the one that traded for him he see something in him and he is a player that we all need to take very serious. I really feel like mangini is grooming this guy. If i was the browns coach i wouldn’t want none of are QB’s . We could do better with Tim Couch as QB.
I think I recognize this guy
He has his counterparts at Acme Packing Company.

Well then the Colts must be grooming Curtis Painter to start because Peyton Manning only threw 2 passes in their first preseason game. I’ll bet the coach gave up on Manning after his 1 for 2 performance for 6 yards. And the Steelers must be grooming Dennis Dixon to take over for Roethisburger because he only threw 6 passes in their first preseason game.

I am ok with Quinn’s performance last night. He was able to move the ball. He very easily could have ended up with 10 points on the board from his drives. With more playing time, I would expect him to settle down and do even better.
Yeah, you can’t blame him for Braylon’s drop in the end zone. He certainly looked much better than Anderson. The offensive line is a concern, though. Two of the interceptions were the result of pressure on the QB as he threw.

Did the pressure come from the middle or the right side
" Of course Steroids should be allowed! I wanna see 700 foot home runs and 90 yard field goals! I litterally want to see someone's d**k get shoved in the dirt!"

Pressure came from everywhere. Are OL didn’t play as a team we must get better, or we will have the first round draft next year
Absolutely correct
Pressure came from everywhere.
That is exactly what Dom Capers’ defense is designed to do!
The glass is more than half-full.
Our OL didn’t play well; I don’t know what you mean by “didn’t play as a team.” They all wore the same jersies and helmets so I think they were all on the same team.
And I can guarentee we’re going to have a first round draft pick anyways next year no matter what happens.

Maybe he thinks that we will play so bad that mangini will have to cheat, resulting in a loss of a first rounder

I was very disappointed in Quinn he throw behind and make bad reads. The pick was a very bad read on his part and the pass that Edwards dropped was a bad read also, the cb had him covered on both plays With third at 2 at the 7 he throws a short pass 2 feet behind cribbs now why are you happy with this. You can’t evaluate the QB’s on this game. The coach needs to play Quinn in the first half and anderson in the second. Then Anderson in the first and guinn in the second that the only why to evaluate the QB’s .
I told myself not to reply to you, but how could the dropped Edwards TD pass possibly be considered a bad read?
The cornerback had has hand up in Edwarad face. It was a dangers pass to throw, he should have not thrown the ball. Mangini saw this to, thats why he made the statement about not scoring. Quinn had time to look for someone else. That was his instincts to throw over the middle, and you know as a well as i you can do that in collage, but its just so hard to throw over the middle, when you are that close to the goal line in the NFL. He’s instincts told him to put the ball in the same place twice. I’m sure Mangini had some harsh words for Quinn and Edwards. Its very hard to catch a pass, when a guy jumps up and you see has hand, you take your eyes of the ball if the ball would have been on a rope, they would have scored but then again thats instincts. Now don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying Quinn doesn’t have good instincts, what I’m saying is he is not trusting his instincts. What Quinn is doing is trying not to make mistakes. You know when you play not to make mistakes that is all you do. Anderson on the other hand, he just want’s to score with one pass, and he has some luck with it some time. But if the line doesn’t start doing the job you could have Steve Young back there and he would be running for his life too. Quinn, Anderson, Ratliff any of these QB’s could do the job if they have the time 2.5 to 4 seconds is that to hard to ask for. Remember this was the first preseason game. The browns my go all the way to opening day before we find a starter at QB but how ever it is. I will never boo my QB.
You did see that the first pass hit BE in the hands right? He’s a professional athlete, he should be able to make that catch, period. The fault is his, not Quinn’s.

Wow, what an incoherent rant. You really don’t know anything about football, do you?

If that play happened with ratliff who’s fault would it be
" Of course Steroids should be allowed! I wanna see 700 foot home runs and 90 yard field goals! I litterally want to see someone's d**k get shoved in the dirt!"

Wow. I can’t believe I stayed up to watch the 0100 rebroadcast of that. I had a few impressions from the game.
On the QB’s: Quinn looked a lot better than DA, though it seemed like he also got much better protection. In the end neither of them put points on the board, but it seemed that the only reliable receivers they had to go to were Furrey and Cribbs.
The rest of the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd string offense: I hope the coaches saw something good, but I didn’t.
The Defense: For the most part there was no indication that they have the potential to get to the QB enough to matter, stop the run, or cover receivers. And despite Mangini’s tackling drills, I didn’t see much practical application – it seemed like there were a lot of missed tackles and/or guys out of position.
I did see a few good plays by Bernard, including one where he came off a block and turned around to bring down the RB after the (someone) beside him failed to do so. However, (and I’m not sure about this) it may also have been Bernard who was standing flat-footed as a play went past him a bit later in the same drive.
I know it’s just preseason and a time when the coaches are supposed to be evaluating the players, but this? Really? Mangini said in his press conference that they didn’t coach very well. I’m afraid I agree with him.
The browns need a lot of work. Don’t you think that the players looked very tired? I think he may have over worked them. They were slow and never had there heads in the game. How do you feel about this?
If the players are too tired during the first preseason game then we’re in big trouble. And they shouldn’t be playing in the NFL if that’s the case.

Quinn looked a lot better than DA, though it seemed like he also got much better protection.
I did not see the game, but Quinn tends to move better than DA and avoids some pressure by moving both within the pocket and running out of it. Was DA being statuesque a part of that difference in pressure?
Maybe that was it. I didn’t record the game, though, so I can’t go back to check – and I can’t really claim to have the best eye for catching all of those elements.
But, man, that series went by so fast I thought maybe I had fallen asleep and missed the middle of the drive. How disheartening to discover that I hadn’t.
Is it a Saturday night? Yeah, that’s not good.
