Cleveland Browns Training Camp Report: Day 19 - Not Too Eventful
There won't be any more two-a-day training camp sessions for the Browns this season. In fact, there are only four practices open to the public remaining -- this Thursday, and then next week Monday-Wednesday. All of those practices will be held in the afternoon.
I don't know if I remember a Browns training camp having such good weather. Sure, it's hot, but the team has not been forced to move to the indoor facility yet, and it really only rained during one session this August.
TRAINING CAMP REPORT - DAY 19 (8/19/09)
- Tucker Missing in Action: It's not looking good for Ryan Tucker's odds of being in the starting lineup Week 1, which would go against what most of us expected in our training camp previews. Tucker left Monday's session with an apparent injury, and he was no where to be found Wednesday. When asked if this had anything to do with him considering retirement again, the team responded "no".
- Scouting the Lions: Much of the session focused on preparing for the Detroit Lions this weekend. There are two former Browns players you might be interested in following on the Lions. First up is WR Dennis Northcutt, who is listed as a starter or the equivalent of Mike Furrey's role with us. The other guy is DT Shaun Smith, who isn't even close to first-string.
- Heiden Drops a Pair: It was an off day for TE Steve Heiden. Close to the end of practice, a drill was run with 1:30 on the clock at their own 24-yard line with no timeouts and a 16-10 deficit. Brady Quinn didn't manage a first down, thanks to Heiden dropping passes on second and fourth down.
- Same Drill, With Anderson: In the same drill, QB Derek Anderson had some support from our second-round picks. He hit WR Brian Robiskie for gains of 16- and 24-yards to move the ball down the field, and eventually capped the drive with a 20-yard touchdown to WR Mohamed Massaquoi.
- Back-to-Back Jacks: The play of the day came when Brady Quinn connected with WR Braylon Edwards on a deep ball for a 65-yard touchdown over DB Corey Ivy. A little bit later though, Derek Anderson responded with a deep ball of his own to WR Lance Leggett. Quinn ran with the first-team on the day, but both quarterbacks ended up playing pretty decent.
- Slowly Progressing? Rapid Reports suggests that the number of mistakes in practice are starting to go down for first-round center Alex Mack. Either way, Hank Fraley looks to be a roster lock at this point.
- Injury List: Still not practicing was LB Titus Brown. Working with the trainers were NT Shaun Rogers, LB David Bowens, WR David Patten, WR Paul Hubbard, RB Jerome Harrison, and TE Robert Royal.
- Mum on QB Decision: As he did last week, Eric Mangini will not reveal who will start at quarterback for the Browns this Saturday. Expect a decision to not be publicly announced until a few hours before kickoff.

- Center is only uncertainty as offensive line settles in (Cleveland Plain Dealer, Grossi)
- Tucker missing but has not retired (Canton Repository, Doerschuk)

It sounds like Quinn has done well lately. He better get the starting job

How is Branderson doing? I heard he is getting starter reps.

The PD said Tucker had an undisclosed injury, maybe? I thought I read that but can’t find it on their site anymore.

I´m glad they are looking at least decent. Because that´s all they´ll be allowed to be this season, when we rotate them no matter what to get our moneys worth.

This announcing only a few hours before kickoff seems completely pointless. I get that Mangini likes to be secretive, but for a preseason game against the Lions? All it does, is make the situation seem way more dramatic than it should be, bringing unwanted attention to the fact that we have a QB controversy.
by Roger Dorn on Aug 20, 2009 8:18 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I don’t remember who said it, but I couldn’t agree more: I’m violently sick of this QB controversy. It may not be completely rational, but I don’t care. PICK A *@#$& QUARTERBACK. Let the team know, the receivers, the line, the backs, who is going to be leading this team. Let the coaches underneath you know who to plan around. All this uncertainty – you think it’s good for either QB? Anderson has been back and forth so many times he may be permanently traumatized. Quinn has never been given the chance to settle in and take charge. You can’t give him three weeks to prepare as the leader?
Maybe Mangini should force himself to run a few laps.

i think you make a great point. it would be nice for the starter to have a little camp time to establish himself as a team leader. i know they are both attempting to do that anyway, but there’s something to be said for job security helping your confidence. Quinn looks like he’s had a little better camp, make him the starter and let him take charge. we need to have a clear leader going into the vikings game.

I am feelin’ the “pick a f@$%ing quarterback”.
From what I have seen and heard, it’s time to give Quinn his chance.
I get the feeling Mangini is just trying to have one of them separate themselves so clearly that everyone sees who the QB should be and is spinning the competition in to a positive for the media, the team, and other teams.

I’m gonna go ahead and claim ownership of this. I know others have had opinions one way or the other from the beginning (as have I), but I was fine with letting them compete for a new coach. However, it’s time.
I agree with your last paragraph. What concerns me is he seems to think prolonging the decision isn’t detrimental at all. I disagree.

Yes I believe it was your comment I was referring to.
by danvail on Aug 20, 2009 3:59 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Right. Just say Quinn started the first game so Anderson is starting the second game, give them both reps, and pick a guy before the third preseason game so we know who the starter is going to be. This “controversy” is getting real old.

Anderson' your man
What are you guy’s talking about? Quinn looking better at training camp. I don’t think so!! Anderson has always beaten Quinn out by a long shot, and he’s doing it again this year. It goes right back to what i said before will Ratliff beat out Quinn for the back up.

Anderson beat Quinn out by a longshot in 2007, when Quinn didn’t even get a chance.
Based on when I’ve seen them healthy and playing, Quinn has beaten out DA at every turn in my eyes.
by rufio on Aug 20, 2009 1:24 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
…which leads again to my point: you’re just blindly following Anderson regardless of the facts put in front of you. I’m sure you think Anderson outplayed Quinn in last week’s game right? Oh wait, we couldn’t evaluate their performance in that game, I forgot. Yeah, you’re probably right…

I’m really starting to not trust people on the Cleveland SBN sites that use the subject line.

I'm for it
It helps identify which people know what they are talking about. (please tell me someone gets this)

this comment ® for dohior and dohior alone.
I know this isn’t a civil response, but dohior and dohior alone has exhausted his right towards civil responses. Enough already.

Its just as i thought all you guys are for Quinn Not the QB that has the best change for the browns to win you don’t care if they win or lose as long as Quinn is a starter thats were it ends. I will watch the browns they always have been my team. You people are so closed minded that if Quinn doesn’t start you may jump to another team. Please do i have told you the things that a new coach may install but all guys want is Quinn . Some Fans.

ah, the old “if you don’t agree with me, it just proves that you’re biased” argument…always a classic. AND: you added the “people who disagree with me aren’t real fans”. Double classic!! It couldn’t possibly be that other people are objectively viewing the evidence and coming to a different conclusion. Nah, that couldn’t be it.

and somehow I think every last one of us will still be a Browns fan if DA or God forbid, Ratliff win the job. Except maybe Bradyquinnisbeast

I am really resisting the urge to curse you out. You clearly have no idea about most of DBN and you probably have no idea about who gives us the best chance to win.
There may be logical points to make in DA’s favor, but you aren’t making them.

Being a Penn State guy, it appears Norwood will be cut. I don’t see any reports, no action in the Green Bay game. Shame, he will catch on somewhere.

One day, while driving along, I saw a priest.
I thought I would do a good deed, so I pulled over and asked the priest,
“Where are you going Father?”
“I’m going to give mass at St. Francis Church, about 2 miles down the
road,” replied the priest.
“Climb in, Father! I’ll give you a lift!”
The priest climbed into the rear passenger seat, and we continued down the road.
Suddenly, I saw a Pittsburgh fan walking down the road, with that “P” shirt
on and I instinctively swerved as if to hit him. But, as usual, I swerved back
into the road just in time.
Even though I was certain that I had missed the guy, I still heard a loud “THUD.”
Not understanding where the noise ame from, I glanced in my mirrors but still
didn’t see anything.
I then remembered the priest, and turned to the priest
and said,
“Sorry Father, I almost hit that Pittsburgh fan.”
“That’s OK,” replied the priest, “I got him with the door.”
