Around SBN: Dissecting Nick Diaz's Positive Drug Test

Ok, it's minimal, but Mangini spoke about a typical "sub package" we will use in his press conference Wednesday.

When speaking of Defensive Ends' responsibilities:
"On third down, an outside guy would become an inside guy and, typically, outside linebackers become ends in sub. Our ends move in, our linebackers tend to be the edge guys."

That means we can probably expect two of Wimbley, Bowens, Hall, Veikune, Brown, or Hunt to put their hands on the ground as DEs, and for at least one of our typical DEs to move inside at times. I can't imagine a situation where it would be good for our pass rush to take Shaun Rogers off the field, but our DTs will probably be two of: Rogers, Robaire Smith, C.J. Mosley, Kenyon Coleman, and Corey Williams.

This is very similar personnel to what Romeo Crennel used in some of our nickel and dime packages, hopefully the results are different.

I would actually expect them to stay as stand-up rush men, because that is what they are familiar with. No sense in making them play in a three point stance in obvious passing situations.

Entirely possible. I wonder if Wimbley, Hall, and the other former DEs are more comfortable with their hands down or in a two-point stance.

I really hope they let Corey Williams and Shaun do some more one-gapping and we turn some guys on our defense loose. At least a little bit.

cleveland.com had a story today on Williams and he sounded like he really wants to be allowed to penetrate and attack the backfield again. He’s had some success (14 sacks in 2 years at DT) and we can use all the pass rush help we can get.

I know Mangini likes to stay true to the New England 3-4 (and has had some success with it), but at some point you have to use the resources you have.

No, no, no, no….
You don´t tip your hat like that. Third down, shmird down. You have your linebackers in position, every play! You don´t need a special package. Everyone where they need to be at all times. It´s this cat and mouse game with line-ups countering unknowable playcalling, that causes the unbalances and players out of position, the offense can capitalize on.

Thats why those “linebackers” are called “defensive ends” in this package. They are lined up exactly where you’d expect DEs to be in a passing situation.

That doesn’t mean you “tip your hand”, because either/both LBs can still drop in to zone coverage, cover backs or TEs or WRs who are lined up close to the line of scrimmage, spy the quarterback, or blitz through any number of holes.

The offense always knows you are trying to do two things: stop them from scoring points, and stop them from getting first downs.

You might be happy to know that we also had a package under Romeo that consisted of 0 DL, 6 “linebackers”, and 5 defensive backs. Shaun Rogers lined up at “linebacker” and any of those 6 “linebackers” could blitz or drop in to coverage after the snap. I’d expect Mangini to run either that or a 1-5-5, although you should still be able to do almost anything from almost all of these fronts.

You really shouldn’t waste your time arguing with him. It’s clear he doesn’t read it.
