As Browns receiver Braylon Edwards continues to miss practice time due to a mysterious injury that, as rumor has it, he suffered while playing basketball, some league insiders are wondering whether Edwards is faking it.

Some league insiders (cough Florio cough)
by Roger Dorn on Aug 3, 2009 11:49 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Let me add that the reason this is ridiculous is that even some of the lower IQ players in the league would not be dumb enough to tank their free agency contract season
by Roger Dorn on Aug 3, 2009 11:50 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Nor would their agents allow them to be so dumb.

This is the consequence of having a tight lipped regime. Without the customary leaks and insider “team source” comments, anything and everything will get reported… even if it’s a wild guess. It just sucks that our fan base is so disgruntled that they’re probably as poorly equipped as one can imagine to handle the inevitable rampant speculation.

that’s a great point. it pains me to think that it’s likely that most browns fans who’ve seen this report are once more decrying edwards as a “pretty boy” or “quitter”, when, in fact, they have no idea.
i can’t imagine there’s any faking going on…in fact, i’d imagine mangini is keeping edwards out of practice as a means of proving a point about his low tolerance for stupidity (hurting oneself shortly before training camp while playing basketball counts as stupidity).

hadn’t read the full thread…didn’t realize this was covered below

I don’t know if playing basketball counts as stupidity. He was doing something that isn’t particularly dangerous (i.e. a big air skateboarding competition, doing wheelies on a motorcycle, riding a motorcycle at all, etc.) and he was doing something athletic.
Cross training/playing other sports helps athletes develop movement patterns they don’t normally use (but could still be useful) in their sport of choice, it can help develop awareness, balance, and hand-eye coordination , it helps keep them in shape, and does so in a way that can be a refreshing break from the monotony of weights and cleats.
I don’t know that he had a larger risk of injury vs. reward playing basketball than he did running routes or lifting or doing plyos.
The really questionable decision was not reporting on time.
by rufio on Aug 5, 2009 12:08 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
that’s fair…reporting late definitely compounded any potential mistakes he may have made.
also, i certainly agree that playing other sports is beneficial to any athlete’s overall conditioning/ development: however, i maintain that risking injury by playing hoops within a couple of weeks of training camp w/ a new regime is — if not stupid — sub-smart. but the combo of hurting himself/showing up late certainly added up to a pissed off mangini.

PFT = MLBTrade Rumors while hiding behind the “inside source” banner.
I really despise them. They throw out so much crazy stuff that it isn’t even worth reading. They ran a story about Donte Whitner being benched a couple weeks ago, and it turned out that he was only switching from the FS position to the SS position.
And we still think that Edwards to the Jets for Thomas Jones and a draft pick or two makes a lot of sense.
If that pick isn’t a first rounder then no way is this deal even. I don’t even want to get into why trading a supremely talented wide receiver for an above average running back + throwaway pick is dumb.
by gahnki on Aug 4, 2009 12:58 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Don’t forget the age of that above average running back. Edwards should be entering the prime of his career. Jones is past his prime.

The only bit of truth to their reports is that it takes an awful lot to sideline a guy for so long with an ankle injury. It would almost have to be broken (which it is not), some sort of tear, or the dreaded high ankle sprain. Not even a severe normal sprain would take this long to heal.
Will we need to cut someone once Braylon gets back? Would Mangini do this to punish Edwards for hurting himself playing basketball, missing minicamp, and not showing up early? Has he actually been limping as I have read somewhere, or has he not been limping at all as reported by Grossi?
Just get him on the field and throw him the damn ball.

I read on the OBR (wasn’t pay content) that Braylon had a minor injury that he got playing basketball, and the team was sending a message by not clearing him to play immediately, even though he could be cleared right now. When the team decides to give him his next physical, he will be back on the field. Seems a little trite on the coaching staff’s part
by Roger Dorn on Aug 4, 2009 8:45 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Speaking of the OBR, a fan posted this same quote on their forums and Lane Adkins, an OBR reporter, responded with the following (maybe this is what you were referring to, Dorn):
Contrary to this report, Edwards is awaiting the Browns conducting another physical to clear him for practice.
This is a cat and mouse game between the team and player. The bottom line is, Edwards injured himself off the field, did not report when requested and the team is using the situation to establish the golden rule of the organization.
When the Browns decide to give Edwards another physical, the odds are he will pass, unless the team sees something of an issue the player is unaware of.

Yes, thanks. This is what I had read over there. It was in the Watercooler so I didn’t mind repeating it here
by Roger Dorn on Aug 4, 2009 12:47 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
So that seems like something Mangini might do, IMO, but isn’t it just pure speculation at this point?
by rufio on Aug 4, 2009 4:55 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yes. Some of the OBR stuff turns out to be pure speculation that never really gets verified or not, so it is something worth considering, but could also just be one man’s guess

I think it’s just the staff sending a clear message that the inmates are done running the asylum. The smallest of issues will be handled the way the coaches want them to be handled. That way, when a big issue comes up, it is also clear who is in charge.

No worries
Braylon in a contract year will be a Beast. That’s assuming decent QB play though.

How about to the Eagles for FB Kyle Eckel, G Nick Cole and LB Moise Fukou?
Or to the Lions for LB Ernie Sims, G Manny Ramirez and DT Chuck Darby?
Wowee.
by mooncamping on Aug 4, 2009 11:16 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I think I would prefer that Eagles trade of the two. That looks tasty
by Roger Dorn on Aug 4, 2009 12:48 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I dont know. They might have to throw in another fullback for me to be interested
by BradyQuinnisBeast on Aug 4, 2009 2:23 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Or lets raid the Seahawks: LB Tony Taylor, G Mansfield Wrotto and DT Craig Terrill.
Ok, and if it´s the Jets, try QB Chris Pizzotti, OT Damien Woody and OT Wayne Hunter, maybe WR David Clowney.
Or lets do the Bears, and get back OT Kevin Shaffer, add LB Mike Rivera, C Josh Beekman, CB Craig Steltz.
Or ye ole Giants, but instead of what they were talking about try: FB Madison Hedgecock, WR Ramses Barden, QB David Carr.
Aren´t you all in the least bit tempted?
If they stall say we´ll throw in Quinn or Anderson, plus draft picks.

Straight across for Marshawn Lynch. My monster Flanker.
Leonard Weaver, monster Flanker…
by mooncamping on Aug 4, 2009 11:46 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I probably should go through every team, but I see on NFL.com, that they may need a defensive tackle, so hows about ole dawg Sean Smith and Braylon Edwards for:
G Justin Geisinger, LB Anthony Heygood, FB Brad Hoover, FS Nate Salley.

I find reports like this irritating because of the complete absence of fact. Obviously we live in a media culture where reporters love to speculate, but just because he doesn’t have some terrible, debillitating injury, the conclusion must be that he’s faking it. Until I hear some proof that he’s disgruntled, wants out of Cleveland, or has stopped caring about being a professional, this rumor is nothing more than journalist-speculation-crap.
Also, why the hell would we need to trade him at this point? With his upside, why wouldn’t you at least give him a season to bounce back? Aren’t you tired of seeing us trade away players and see them succeed on other teams (more of a trend for the Indians than the Browns, but still)?
