Rookie 6th Rounder Don Carey Waived by Browns

Don Carey's tenure with the Cleveland Browns didn't last long, as he was waived/injured by the team. The injury he suffered a few days ago must have sealed his fate, although I guess there's always a long shot they could bring him back. Taking his place is undrafted free agent CB Brandon Anderson of the University of Akron.

That was quick. I wonder if this sends a bit of a message to the other new guys in camp.

seems like a wasted pick, but i guess there isn’t much else to do.

1 of 3 6th rounders, not the end of the world.

Its funny because he was our first fo the 6th rounder, and we have high hopes for JD and Francies, but Carey already was cut

Bernie Parrish

Thought Don Carey was going to be the second coming of BERNIE PARRISH. Sorry to see him go. Maybe pick him up again later in the summer. Browns made a mistake on this one.

You gotta wonder how bad that shoulder injury is.

Also, Mangini said this today:

Don has to go through the waiver process and then, if he clears injury waivers, he reverts back to us for the injured reserve category.

So we still have a shot at retaining him, practice squading him, etc.

CRAP

The Jaguars made a waiver claim on Don Carey, a corner-back who was cut by the Cleveland Browns. Carey is a player whom the Jaguars were reportedly interested in before the draft. He ended up being a 6th round selection, and came from a smaller school, Norfolk State. He’s in the mold of most Gene Smith draft picks, having good measurables, and from all appearances he’s a high character individual. I found this interesting overview.

Jag's fan here

What’s the deal with Carey’s shoulder injury? I would not have expected the Brown’s to waive a rookie draft pick even if he was only a 6th round pick. Either way, we need the depth in our secondary and could defenitely use him. What’s your all’s take on this one? Is Carey decent or does he stink so bad that it was worth the risk of losing him to the waiver process? Thanks and good luck this season. That game you guys won last year against us was the most exciting loss our team suffered all year. I was at the stadium that day and it was back and forth the whole day. I can’t say I enjoy losing, but that was a fun game to watch nonetheless.

It’s really hard to say; I think he had one practice and then got injured. It was strange, because Mangini said if he cleared waivers, they would place Carey on the injured reserve, and that the reason they made the move was because his injured shoulder wouldn’t allow him to be back until next year’s minicamp.

Thanks Chris for the info

I’ll pass this along to those over at Big Cat Country about Carey. I guess we won’t know how good he is until next season.

He didn’t seem like a freak, but he also seemed to have the talent to play in the league if he played with good fundamentals. He was a confident dude, and I’m not terribly upset he was cut, but I would have rather had him than one of our older vets. Good luck to both your Jags and Carey.
