Since Smith was released, roughly six teams have contacted him about the possibility of signing him. But Smith had to inform each of those teams he will be serving his suspension during the season's first four weeks and he will be available in Week 5, if anyone is interested. Smith also told teams he took a water pill, an over-the-counter, non-performance-enhancing substance.
I'm sure many of you have read this story already. Given that Smith was the first cut of Eric Mangini's tenure, and an abrupt one at that, I have to think Mangini is vindicated in many ways by this news story. Also taking into account the Michael Crabtree situation in SF, and the controversy that surrounded the draft due to Mangini's comments (calling Crabtree a premadonna ), I already have Mangini ahead of Butch Davis on character assessment.
I've also spent the last week hearing every carbon-copy analyst proclaiming Mangini a moron when it comes to team chemistry. Whether they site the QB battle, the previous locker room change ups, they always have their reasons (beyond the fact that one analyst comes up with an opinion and then that opinion becomes relative fact because most of these guys don't really want to do research on all 32 teams). Its a very different world from January-when Jets players were openly disgruntled about losing their coach, including Leon Washington who stated: “The Browns got themselves a really good coach.”
So I'm very curious about what many of you think. Is this locker room behind him? Is this fan base behind him? And how long will the leash be in comparison to Romeo and Butch?
