Browns Waive LB Marcus Benard, OT Corey Hilliard, DB Bret Lockett
To make room for the roster moves the Cleveland Browns made earlier in the day, the team announced that the following three players were waived from the team:
- OT Corey Hilliard
- LB Marcus Benard
- DB Bret Lockett
Besides the three players we reported that the Browns signed earlier, they also added DB Marquis Floyd to the 53-man roster. Floyd was on the Seattle Seahawks practice squad last year and was one of their final cuts this year. For those who missed it earlier, the other three players to sign were RB Cedric Peerman (Baltimore), RT Phil Trautwein (St. Louis), and CB DeAngelo Smith (Dallas).
The Browns also reached an injury settlement with OL Fred Weary, so he is no longer with the team. It'll be interesting to see if a settlement is soon reached with veteran Ryan Tucker.
As for the players the Browns waived, don't be surprised if at least Benard and Lockett end up on the team's practice squad.

Floyd is 29 and never played a season on the roster. Why him over Lockett?

How do you sign someone to the Practice Squad

They have to pass waivers which means that all other 31 teams have to pass on them. If nobody wants them we can sign them to the practice squad. They’re on the team, they just don’t suit up on sundays and aren’t considered on the 53 man roster

I realize they couldn’t even make the teams that drafted them, but I’m a big fan of both Peerman and Smith. Obviously, they have a ways to go to be impact professionals and they have their issues (Peerman’s durability for one), but they both give us young talent and both could make an impact in the future.

Trautwein is a bad sign. He isnt good enough for the RAMS, who have an awful O-line

They have an awful OL but they brought in a lot of depth this offseason to try to improve it. Since they were stockpiling them this offseason, they may have had to let someone decent go. I’m not really sure how good their guys are but the 49ers were doing the same thing this and they actually ended up letting a good one go in Joe Toledo. Maybe Trautwein is a similar case.
Another possibility is that we claimed Trautwein on waivers while trying to strike a deal with a veteran free agent that would replace him. 4+ year veterans avoid waivers and therefore can decide which team they want to sign a new deal with.
Their line should be greatly improved actually. They signed the Ravens center in the offseason, they signed Jacob Bell from the Titans for big money last offeseason, spent the number 2 overall pick on an OT this year and had a pick from a year or 2 ago in the first round in Alex Barron. They have put a lot of resources recently into that offensive line.
Not a bad depth pickup
Trautwein was the left tackle on 2 national title teams and played against some really good players in the SEC, Florida State, Ohio State and Oklahoma. He was hurt and missed all 2007 with a microfracture of the left foot. I was surprised that he didn’t get invited to the combine, which is a reason he didn’t get drafted.
He probably isn’t good enough to be a left tackle because he was just too stiff, but may be able to be a reasonable backup at right and grow into a starter. He has more upside than Hilliard, as the Colts blog Blue Stampede wrote:
In all seriousness, Hilliard is lucky he wasn’t fired at halftime of last week’s pre-season game. Hilliard was given a chance to start at RT for the Colts (a pretty big deal!) and Corey responded with not one, not two, but three sacks allowed on Peyton Manning in just five plays.
Trautwein is worth a shot.

Lets be real, if any of these guys are actually playing this year, we’re either supremely lucky (because we scooped someone up who is actually good) or we are going to be in for a long season (because so many good players ahead of these guys would have to have been hurt for them to actually get in a game).
Just start the season already. Thank goodness college football started this weekend.
Between Titus Brown and Benard I hope someone makes the practice squad because there looked to be real potential there. Beyond the ex-Jets our LB core is VERY young. This could be good, or very bad. Thoughts?
I hope we keep brown and Bernard
