_______________ for quarter back! (fill in the blank)

As a Browns fan since 1980 I think that we have been great when we had a great QB. This should be our top priority. Think about Brian Sipe, Kosar, Testaverde and DA in 07. This being said I do not think it is to our benefit to roll the dice on a draft pick I believe our top priority should be to go after a proven winner or someone who has already shown great promise as a pro. Now that Holmgren is running the show as far as the Roster and our new GM I believe that we will trade with teams other than the Jets..(although having Sanchez right about now wouldn't be so bad) That being said anyone who knows anything about Kevin Kolb would agree that he has a rifle arm with pin point accuracy and could by all means lead us in the right direction. Josh Cribbs is my favorite player to ever don a Browns uniform but that being said I would be willing to trade him for Kevin Kolb. Question is do they need a Cribbs when they have Desean Jackson. Maybe not. What about someone like a Michael Vick he would be great in the Dawg Pound!! lol .. I dont like rolling the dice on an unproven college QB.

Star-divide

This will be interesting to say the least on who and where we end up with but I am convinced that DA and BQ have had ample time to prove themselves. Holmgren is a great QB coach so we will see what they come up with their. If all else fails I hear Brian Sipe is available!!!!! I would like to hear any other theories on who else will be taking snaps in 2010. In the meanwhile if Josh Cribbs can play everything else why dont we give him a preseason game behind the center???

Quinn gets another year

There is no free agent better as of right now and no draft pick will put the browns in a better position. It takes a lot for a draft pick to be effective qb in this league.

Good point there TheMan1. What actually seems available.
First off, Brett Ratliff should be signed as our prime backup QB, so he shouldn´t be on the list.
Then, although I think Jason Campbell has great potential, he belongs with the Redskins, so that´s not a possibility.
Also, at the threat of ridicule, you all know I like Jared Zabransky, who is not on the list. So that factors in. So does Chris Pizzotti from Harvard, who has found a slot on the Packers depth chart.
I also believe, that you can procur players that are under contract under certain conditions, so I´ll leave that unknown up to speculation.
But then we can get into it, and my list of preferences goes:
1.Chad Pennington (this one caught me by surprise, the Dolphins shouldn´t leave him dangling)
2.David Carr
3.Rex Grossman

by mooncamping on Jan 20, 2010 6:37 AM EST up reply actions

The reason that Pennington is available is because Henne is now the starter and Pennington suffered another shoulder injury.

I wouldn’t mind giving him a look, but I think he is done.

by Bernie19Kosar on Jan 20, 2010 3:47 PM EST up reply actions

there are a few possibilities IMO

1. We keep quinn and give him another shot

2. We get a QB in free agency (Kyle orton, tavaris jackson, hasselbeck, or others)

3. We get one of Philly’s QBs (Either McNabb or Kolb)

4. We Draft a guy.

These are listed in how likely they are to me. It is possible we give quinn another shot and keep a guy like hasselbeck. right now I have no Idea what holmgren or heckert are thinking or what QB they are eyeing

by bross09 on Jan 19, 2010 2:02 PM EST reply actions

Any one of those is possible.

by emily522 on Jan 19, 2010 2:05 PM EST up reply actions

yes, but I think 1. they will keep quinn. and 2. the 2nd and third choices are much more likely than drafting a guy to be the franchise guy, especially in the first round.

by bross09 on Jan 19, 2010 2:46 PM EST up reply actions

I don’t see how you can’t vote trading Cribbs for Manning, it would be an absolute steal for the Browns!

by Roger Dorn on Jan 19, 2010 2:15 PM EST reply actions

The question is, how do we convince the Colts to go for this? Maybe we can tell them that Cribbs will run back every kick for a touchdown so they won’t need a quarterback any more. Do you think they’ll believe us?

by Buckeye Brad on Jan 19, 2010 2:31 PM EST up reply actions

By the way, Manning should be insulted that it only took Cribbs to get him in a trade but it took Cribbs and Rogers to get Drew Brees. How many MVP’s has Brees won?

Wow. I think I can actually see his eyes locked on a point ten inches behind the ball.

by JustBob on Jan 22, 2010 9:11 PM EST up reply actions

One of the very few things I do know about baseball is that “keeping your eyes one the ball” all the way to the point where it contacts (or misses) your bat is actually not helpful because the eyes/brain cannot process the information fast enough to actually make it useful. After about 30ft into the pitch, any eye contact with the ball is useless. I would assume a deep ball such as the one above is the same way.

It isn’t that he isn’t looking in the right place, Braylon just can’t catch.

by rufio on Jan 23, 2010 9:15 PM EST up reply actions

I doubt this. Fastballs of the middle to short range variety in the NFL are 55-60mph, as opposed to baseballs which are 90-95 mph. Deep balls are likely coming in a bit slower than that due to the air resistance they’d face over 30+ yards. Baseballs are also smaller, and harder to track than a football against a sky background.

You have a cross section at least four or five times larger coming in at half the speed. Looking at the angle of the pass coming in, that pass suffered a heck of a drop off in trajectory so it’s probably not even quite at that half speed mark. I’m not convinced there’s a strong parallel here.

That said, your brain makes an extrapolation about where to expect the ball that gets it’s last piece of processable data before the ball would arrive. The question is, how soon before the ball arrives? Venturing a guess, I’d say on a deep ball, around four feet. That may sound significant, but it’s no different than when you play catch. If you really concentrate on what you’re seeing, you don’t see the ball the last few feet of a strong pass. It’s kind of a cool thing to realize.

Regardless, looking at the clip and seeing his head movement, he is tracking the ball. My amateur opinion would be that it’s both – he’s not looking in the right place AND he can’t catch.

by danvail on Jan 25, 2010 4:34 PM EST up reply actions

There’s absolutely a strong parallel!

You essentially can not see a baseball for the last 15 feet of it’s flight toward home plate. (4:30ish to 5:30ish in that video)

I don’t think 4 feet is a bad guess about the point on a deep pass that is similar to those 15 feet in baseball. Still, above Braylon is clearly trying to look the ball all the way in, even past those 4 feet. His eyes are behind the ball toward the end of the animation, after the ball is safely inside that 4 foot zone.

In that animation, Braylon is getting more visual information than necessary, if anything. How is that not looking in the right place?

by rufio on Jan 28, 2010 1:48 AM EST up reply actions

How much does wearing a helmet affect seeing the ball once it gets closer? I would imagine Braylon would have a hard time looking for the defender and the ball once his field of view starts shrinking.

All other WRs wear a helmet. So it’s not a problem.

by skipkirk on Jan 28, 2010 4:47 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah I know but obviously Braylon is not like all other WRs. When I typed that I was wondering if maybe he had maybe a sight problem or maybe his brain had trouble processing what his eyes are seeing.

After I typed it I realized it was Braylon and I really didn’t care.

Hahaha. I can all but guarantee he’s had his eyes checked out numerous times by team physicians, and he was definitely prodded at the combine. I would guess we checked his eyesight out before drafting him 3rd overall.

As for the brain processing stuff, I would assume that’s a much more complicated test, so I have no idea.

The helmet shouldn’t affect him too much, especially when going deep because he has a lot of time to get his head around and find the ball.

He shouldn’t be actively looking for the defender until he has the ball secured. If the D is going to hit you, they are going to hit you regardless of if you catch the ball or not. If anything, he should be “feeling” the CB with his peripheral vision.

by rufio on Feb 4, 2010 11:21 PM EST up reply actions

Not only based on the picture. He has this unbridled, unleashed quality. It´s like when he snaps the ball he goes into berzerker mode. You know, in celtic history when they went into battle they had these berzerkers, who as soon as the skirmish began would fight themselves into this unstoppable rage, and when the fight ended the normal warriors had to be careful not to cross their paths for a while, because in that state they could not distinguish friend from foe.
Alex Mack does not have the demeanor and qualities of an offensive lineman, his whole attitude leans towards a defensive lineman´s mentality. Watch some film, he goes bonkers when he snaps the ball. By the end of the play he could be anywhere within a 30 yard radius.
He can play compulsively all he wants as a Nose Guard.

I say give Ratliff a shot!
hahaha not really.

But i do think we need to give quinn a solid shot. He just needs the supporting cast around him. I think once we make many improvements over the offseason he will play like he did at ND. He needs to run around a bit more, and throw more deep balls, not these throws to the flat and screens. He’ll be hitting Evan Moore a lot, and probably Cribbs. I see the browns as being prodominatly a running team next year. More wild cat, and some Harrison/Davis solid running.

by DawgPound77 on Jan 21, 2010 8:39 PM EST reply actions

He just needs the supporting cast around him.

To do what exactly? Be mediocre? You don’t think he’s a Reggie Wayne away from Peyton Manning, do you? Or even just a Steve Smith away from Eli?

Surround Quinn with an excellent supporting cast and you still have a middling quarterback. He’s part of the problem, not part of the solution.

Here’s a list of QBs who were more effective than Quinn this year:

Chad Henne
Marc Bulger
Bruce Gradkowski
Vince Young
Chris Redman
Seneca Wallace
Daunte Culpepper

I’m serious.

We seem to have a good working relationship with Miami. They have the veteran back-up in Pennington, and Henne was a surprise after injuries killed the Wildcat. That leaves Tyler Thigpen as odd man out. He got pushed out of K.C. after Pioli wasted all that money on Cassel and decided to keep Huard and Croyle as backups. In 07 when those bums went down, Thigpen threw for something like 22 touchdowns in 11 starts. Off the bench. As a third stringer. From Costal Carolina. He’s a lot more interesting than some of the other names I’ve seen tossed around.

by DaveDawg09 on Feb 4, 2010 7:10 PM EST reply actions

Technically it was more like 18 touchdowns but it was pretty darn good.

Here is a scouting report from arrowhead pride (originally copied off of nfl draft scout)
    * Very good at improvising on the football field
    * Has developed quick load and reload ability
    * Excels at eluding pressure in the pocket, showing the keen field vision and awareness to avoid the rush and is a dangerous open-field runner when flushed
    * Rhythm passer who might be able to throw the deep crossers, but is better served staying away from throwing the long ball
    * Has decent acceleration heading up field, but is best when changing direction sharply while maintaining balance throughout his run

    * Has to work on his release and delivery, as he stands on his toes in the pocket
    * Tends to force his passes into traffic and needs to show better judgment
    * Seems to lack the ability to locate his secondary receivers, zeroing in on his primary targets too long
    * Will force the ball into traffic rather than throwing it away
    * Most of his sacks come when he fails to locate his receiver and finds himself standing right in the path of the edge rusher

He also has good zip on the ball. granted, he does have some negatives similar to DA (bad judgement, forcing the ball) but I think he might end up being better when he gets a shot. He also is very mobile, while anderson was a statue.

I also worry that like with anderson, he did worse later on in the season (which means defenses were figuring them out). this did happen with thigpen and he might have lost a close game against the dolphins, giving them their only win, but he rebounded against a decent bengals team. He did have some of the problems near the end of the year that DA did but not nearly as bad.

However, thigpen was much more consistent. out of the 12 games he took a significant part in, only 2 he had a QB rating under 60 (his first PT in the NFL, and then his first start the next wk). he had 2 starts in the 60s passer rating (the one against Miami and one game with a 68 against the titans D that was spectacular that yr). he had less superstar games, but also less bad games than DA. DA even when he was good was a bipolar QB. these are his first 5 starts (in QB rating): 121, 57, 109.5, 59, 142.5 (all over the place). here is thigpen (after his first career start, the next 5…) 110.9, 89.4, 108.4, 76.1, 85.4…much more consistency.

I truly like this move. I like thigpen and with a little time, I think he could be a good QB. he definitely still has some problems, but some are the type that just come with experience and confidence. I also like his mobility and he was even a better rusher in 2008 than their draft pick jamaal charles (higher ypc AND more yards…wow…and he also had a receiving TD). DA also had a lot more time to throw and much better protection (thigpen is mobile but was sacked 29 times. DA is a statue but was sacked 14 times…there was definitely a discrepancy in the lines). he also had to throw on the run a lot.

I think that year he was a better QB than DA and he was on a much worse team. put him on the browns and I think he outperforms DA that year…

Imagine where he would have been drafted if he was 6’6 and had DAs arm, and went to Oregon State. DA was a big guy with a big arm, at a major college. thigpen was from a small college, was 6’1 (short by scouts standards for a QB), had a good arm but not Andersons. take away the arm issue, thigpen in the Pac 10 with 3-4 more inches and He is probably a 4th rounder…it is uncommon for D1-AA guys to be drafted period.

by bross09 on Feb 5, 2010 2:22 AM EST up reply actions

I picked him up in a Fantasy League when I had been poisoned on the D.A. Cool – Aid. I got desperate for a QB and grabbed him as soon a he took over the starting spot. I actually went to BW3 to watch a couple of his starts and was very impressed. Let Quinn start another year, trade D.A. (for what, I wonder) and put this kid behind him. He’ll be cheap and looks to have a ton of upside. Looks like Buffalo may have some rumored interest as well……
